Listed below is a catalogue of radio yachts
designed and built by BG, along with other designs either acquired or partially
built by BG over the past 10 years of racing.
Whilst we believe our own designs have always given a good account account of
themselves at any level of competition, you will not find any bold claims of
superior design here, just an honest self assessment of their qualities. Our
designs are based on knowledge gained and learned from both dinghy/skiff and
model sailing with over 25 years experience at championship level.
Concentration on sail production and the lack of a build facility has left
little time for new design development, with the use of non-own designed boats
over recent years enabling us to look outside of the "square". This is something
that many good designers of both full size and model yachts have done over the
years to further enhance their knowledge base and keep some perspective on
development.
09 will see new designs for both IOM & RM class yachts available in lines plan form for either home build or production under license. These will be developments drawn from our previous designs and will not be pitched at certain conditions but all round performance.

This was the first BG IOM design with lines
similar to current 'skiffs' of the time. The design was drawn using Maxsurf
Software and for a first attempt, the boat

This boat was a modification if
the SC2 design with a lowered freeboard and a deck moulding added.

This was BG's first narrow
design, directed more towards flatter water, pond conditions. Up wind in all
rigs the design proved competitive, but suffered downwind with a

Designed as an all round boat,
on lessons learned on our previous designs. Hull was at moderate beam
with clean lines and has proven to this day to be competitive in any fleet
throughout the world when sailed well. In 3 International
Championships from 2003 to 2005, a Disco was placed within the top 6 at each

This design was based loosely
on our earlier SC4 design. With a narrower beam, flatter aft sections
and a higher freeboard. Time ran out to develop the boat in the lead
up to the 2005 Worlds with the proven Disco being favored. A new fin
and rudder design from the USA transformed the boat in late 2005 into a
design with great potential. Graeme Bird sailed the boat to 4th place in his

Lines plans for this design were
commissioned by Davor Duzevic
in Croatia in early 2007 the boat is of moderate beam and boat #2 was sailed
by Denis Vukas in the 2007 Worlds. For a boat only one week old the
boat showed much potential over the weeks racing, culminating a few trips to
A fleet by weeks end. At the Euros in Croatia 08 the boat did show a slightly disappointing performance in the difficult light wind and chop due to a balance problem experienced by others using similar foils with similar placement. Changes have been made and we look forward to more solid feedback from Davor and Denis. Boats Made: 8 |

This hull was originally
moulded in 2004 from our SC4 moulds with freeboard added to the bow.
It sat as an unfinished project until early 2008 when it was decided to
complete her. With balance and rig lessons learnt from sailing the
Dicks design Widget, the boat was launched in April this year. What was once a light air boat, was now
transformed into a boat very competitive also at the top end of the rig ranges
reinforcing our 2007 thoughts learned on rig design and setup. Boats Made: 1 |
This design is a development on from our "Karaoke" design being built in Croatia. "Reggae" at a beam of 204mm sports a more streamlined appearance above the waterline along with a little more reserve buoyancy added to the forward sections enabling her to be driven hard off-wind at the top of any rig range. After a short introduction to
Marblehead sailing with a Zero design with all swing rigs, I decided to
hurriedly build a narrow, modern type boat for the 2001 NSW Championship.
Running short on time, it was decided that a low budget boat be built in
carbon from from our SC4 IOM moulds, with a 290mm section being added
through the middle of the boat. After placing 5th in the Championship

After the fun of building the
SC4M this boat was designed. The boat was a very moderate design in RM
thinking at the time, with a swing rig used for the A rig and the lower rigs
using the shroudless conventional method. In it's first outing at the
2002 Australian Championships it placed 5th in a large fleet against

This boat was a development of the well
balanced Blaze design, with new foils and a much lighter and stiffer carbon/kevlar
construction, incorporating a moulded deck. Rig development through
the use of better quality spars and materials went hand in hand with this
design's development. In late 2005 3 budget versions were built with

This boat was based on the
popular Boogie design with freeboard and flare added to the bow in readiness
of the high winds to be experienced at the 2006 Fleetwood Worlds. A
new fin/lead combination and pocket luff lower rigs were used with this boat
showing good speed during the Championship. Many good lessons were
learnt at Fleetwood with this being my first International competition in

| This new design is a development on from our "Boogie/Anarchy" designs. Whilst being a slightly smaller overall design with lower wetted surface, "Jive" retains the raised bow sections of our "Anarchy" design enabling her to be driven hard downwind. Over the Christmas of 2006 a project was
needed to combat many long days indoors. I had long wondered whether
the Robbe kit could be improved with current rigging and fin mouldings to be
competitive. I purchased fin and rudder mouldings from David Creed and
proceeded to fit out the boat with a lowered rig and a mast tube through to
the hull. With the design being modelled on the Dick's Metric Magic
design of the past I couldn't see any reason why the boat would not perform
on it's day. What resulted was a boat that was beautifully balanced
upwind with all rigs, but just lacked a little pace downwind when pressed.
It's light top suit performance was something to behold. In all, this
boat can be much more than a basic club level boat for those on a budget,

On my return to the UK in 2006
after the sale of my own Anarchy I was left without an RM. Not being
in a position to mould one of my own boats, I decided to purchase a Starkers3
second hand from an old IOM customer of mine, as this was the design most
sailed at Birkenhead. Whilst being a very different boat to sail than
my own Anarchy design, you could not deny the boat's straight line speed in
the lower rigs. I have been fortunate to have some good results with

After completing a Widget kit
for a customer in 2004 I was very impressed by the behavior of the design on
the few times I saw it. Upon my arrival in the UK, mid 2006, I was
fortunate enough to loan Victoria's boat at club level on a few occasions.
Whilst being well balanced, the boat was still perceived to have a weakness
at the top end of the rig range. With the 2007 Worlds fast approaching
and having gained a 2nd placing at the Croatian National Championship with
Victoria's boat, I decided this was the way to go for Marseille by
purchasing a David Creed moulding kit. Having world class skippers
such as Martin Roberts and Graham Elliott sailing the same design in the
World's toughest club racing fleet at Birkenhead, UK, led to the Widget
being optimised to it's very best potential, placing 1st and 4th in
Marseille. Without the nature of racing, sportsmanship and co-operation between skippers at Birkenhead this design would not be what it is today, still a proven race winner. BG Results: 2nd Croatian National Championship 2006 1st World Championship 2007 1st NSW Championship 2007 |
