TEAM LIST HIGHLIGHTS
A very short insight into some of the more dominating factors from each team in terms of personnel that remained in their line up throughout the year. These players were the main contributors and are grouped together in (B)acks, (M)idfielders, (F)orwards and (R)ookies. -c and -vc denote the nominated and preferred captain and vice captain.
Brentford
Bees: (F) D.Jarman, S.Cummings,
Molloy, B.Harvey; (M) S.Black-c, Misiti, Lockwood; (B) Pickett, Peckett, McKay; (R)
Shaw
When Cummings kicked 24 goals from two outings in
the space of three weeks early in the season, things looked bright for the
Bees. But injuries and changes of roles to key players hampered their
season and in the end there just wasn't enough support for Cummings. Their
campaign may well have been bettered with further participation in enlisting new
talent and selling off hacks but the Bees decided to trudge along with the
inconsistent list they had. Reinforced by the small team selection above a lack
of consitent goalkicking power kept them out of the top eight. In the last
couple of rounds they still had a chance to make the finals and the injury and
bad form that succumbed to spearhead Cummings was the eventual downfall of the
side.
West
Adelaide Bloods: (F) Modra,
Neitz, Rioli, Bell, Dixon; (M) Yze, Ottens-c, Tivendale; (B) James, Croft,
B.Sholl; (R) Bruce, C.Davis, J.Fraser
Perhaps one of the more unlucky teams the
Bloods got a tough draw and when the team did manage to click together it was
usually against one of the League's best teams, who still outdid them. While
that saved precious percentage, it didn't help in the Premiership Points
column. Their fate was also sealed in the last few rounds when after
spending most of the season in the top 8 they succumbed to an eventual Grand
Finalist and another team highly in form, plus a team vyeing for the 8th spot,
in spite of their decent win over the Prowlers in the last round. Cameron
Bruce was a highlight for the team while Neitz played too many games in the
backline to be much of a season contributor. The best thing to say about the
Bloods is perhaps their Manager's predictions on the outcome of the season. In
spite of what was otherwise happening mid season, they picked Cobras, Lions,
Bulldogs, Prowlers and Goannas as top five finishers - swap the two bottom ones
around and it would have been 100%!
Old Victoria
Britannia: (F) Donnelly,
P.Williams, A.Rocca, Bradley, Lewis; (M) Garlick-c, McGregor-vc, Harford,
Barnes, Romero; (B) M.Graham, F.Francis, Woods; (R) Bowyer, B.Johnson
A team representing the UK who had three wins on the
trot before falling foul to a couple of the more fancied opponents. The
early draw certainly helped in the last few rounds too when it ensured a finals
berth was theirs for the taking. For some reason the UK Manager disappeared out
of the picture, perhaps because of a few morale lowering losses and Britannia
hovered around 8th-10th position all year. With the assistance of a caretaker
coach Britannia boosted their finals hopes in the second to last round when
essentially it was a mini final play off against the Bloods and they won.
Unfortunately, their finals campaign was short lived when they ousted out in the
first match.
Northern
Bulldogs: (F)
Lloyd, Bradshaw, Schwarz, J.Cook, Robertson, Hudson,
Eagleton; (M) Grgic, Johnstone, M.White-vc, S.Powell, Croad, J.Mooney-c, Bode,
Beaumont; (B) J.Johnson, Koops, Perrie, Tuckey, N.Davis; (R) Biglands,
R.Houlihan, Wheatley
"Figuratively speaking" if any team on
paper could have beaten the real life Essendon in 2000 it would have been the
Bulldogs. They were by far the most superior outfit of the premiership season
kicking the highest score of any fantasy team I have been involved with since
the inception of GFL & IFFL with a 240 point scoreline. They sustained
just two losses for the whole year - unfortunately one of those being the one
that counted most and I'm sure the Coach would have given up many more season
losses for that one against the Lions in the Preliminary Final. Their
performance mirrored that of Essendon and many other Managers complained just in
being in the same league as the Bulldogs. Funnily enough it took an erratic yet
in-form side, Roughriders (just like Western Bulldogs beating Essendon), to
inflict the Bulldogs only loss of the minor round. What makes these Fantasy
Leagues so enjoyable is its unpredictability and perhaps sweet revenge for all
concerned (other than the Bulldogs of course) that they didn't go all the way
and make a cleansweep. The Lions in particular will not forget that Preliminary
Final encounter.
East
Coast
Cobras:
(F) N.Holland, Everritt, A.Lynch, N.Thompson,
Tarrant, R.Smith, Mercuri; (M) Power, Schofield-vc, Blumfield, Edwards, Robran,
N.Stevens, Milburn, A.Houlihan-c; (B) Dragicevic, Goodwin, Marsh; (R) B.Green,
Ling, L.Davis
The Cobras were a strong team reinforced by the
names that appear above and regularly handed out hidings to other teams.
However, when they came against quality opposition they did falter but in spite
of this one always had the feeling that they could produce something special
when needed. Of course, that is proven by the meer fact they won the
premiership and perhaps if they struck a win or two more in the premiership
season, most notably against the likes of the Lions and Bulldogs then they could
have staked the arguable claim of being the season's best. They were
regularly poached against but held firm with some pretty lucky non-pricy pick
ups to ensure their finances kept in check. Ling provided the highlight of the
season when he missed everything after picking the ball up literally five (or
less) metres out and succeeding to put it out on the full. Everritt bagged the
equivalent of 10 goals in an early encounter and no matter how the team faired,
it was like the Australian cricket side, there always seemed to be one who would
come out and take up the challenge.
Bendigo Devils:
(F) McKernan, Pe.Matera, Hird, Burns; (M)
N.Brown-vc, McManus; (B) Walsh, D.Fletcher, M.Johnson; (R) McAllister
The Devils had the proveribal shocker in spite of
already having gained three years experience in the League. They were just
unable to penetrate into the premiership season with any hope of gaining a
finals spot and ended the season on the unflattering note of being the League's
worst - being handed the all sinister wooden utensil to add to the trophy
cabinet. The season start had them on the back foot straight away in a fairly
unsuccessful round of pre-season bidding to sign up players - perhaps the
three-pronged pitch-fork put the potential candidates off? In the end most
of the work rested on Hird with sporadic contributions from the likes of
McKernan and Burns. The team needed to be a bit more involved in the
trading market to get some success. McKernan did kick 8 goals in a match
late in the season but by then it was far too late.
Darwin Dolphins:
(F) Gehrig, McLeod, B.Johnson, Caracella,
Camporeale, Beinke; (M) Snell, A.Lange-vc, J.White, S.Fletcher, J.Bolton; (B)
Bizzell-c, Woewodin, Franchina, McDonald; (R) Spaull, Bootsma
The most amazing thing about this team was that it
was a takeover from a previous Manager who gave up coaching the team within
three or four rounds of the commencement of the season - by which time the
former identity had chalked up three shocking losses. Enter the Darwin based
manager and he had to endure a few more losses while he got the "shocking
team on paper" into some semblance of a competitive outfit. To his credit
he succeeded and the Dolphins became renowned as a 'no push over' team and was
often prefixed an upcoming 'danger game' to one of the better teams, such was
their list which on any given day could produce a frightful account of
itself. By the end of the season the team had 10 wins to it's credit, more
than enough for a finals campaign but the list still lacked slightly the impact
needed to take it all the way and this showed when they met quality opponents
like those figured in the top three spots on the ladder above. For sheer
commitment the Dolphins coach deserved a lot.
Greenwith
Goannas: (F) J.Farmer, C.Sholl,
Goodes, Welsh, Tredrea, Mensch, Lord; (M) M.Lappin-c, Colbert-vc, A.McDonald,
AhMat, Bandy, Bickley; (B) Hotton, O'Bree, Hayes, Gardiner, K.Johnson; (R)
Fitzgerald
In their second year of the competition and coming
off a 1999 Grand Final appearance there was still a sense of foreboding
destruction when the Goannas were able to get their act together. Their midfield
was particularly potent - especially when all of them were there to make good
account of themselves and the fact that the young rookie Fitzgerald got off to a
flying start further demonstrated the possibility of a Flag grabbing season for
the Goannas. On their day they would make work of any team but a mid season
slump against lower grade opposition mixed with succumbing to thumpings from a
couple of top sides relegated them to the lower half of the top 8 and they just
weren't able to break into the the top four for much of the season, when it
looked a top two spot was almost a certainty. The Goannas finally lost to
the Cobras in the Preliminary Final and in a tradition like last year this meant
the eventual Premiers! There were also some disappointments in their
foward line with Tredrea having very little impact on the scoreboard each week
and aside from the sporadic outings Goodes had a quiet second year while the
likes of Sholl and Lord were essentially unsighted for most of the season.
Otherwise things may have been a lot different!
Springfield
Isotopes: (F)
Buckley, S.Grant, N.Lappin, Beams; (M) Riccuito,
Schwass, Wanganeen; (B) Hewitt-vc, A.James, Rigoni
There was a bone crunching start to the
season which saw the Isotopes pushing the top four in the first two rounds,
including an opening 26 goal effort, before facing off against the top two minor
round teams. But when they faced the Bloods and were thrashed with a six goal
scoreline in Round 6 and then proceeded to chalk up further losses the Manager
spat the dummy and walked out on his club. The Isotopes could not chalk up
another win until Round 12 and by then it was too late and a caretaker coach had
been appointed. Further wounds were inflicted when the team lost top
players to other sides through poaching activities and that was it for the
Isotopes season. Finishing 12th was probably even in the end a flattering end to
the season.
Modbury
Jets: (F)
Cornes, Gale, Crawford, A.Jones, Bewick, Salmon; (M)
Ashcroft, B.James, M.Burton, Calthorpe; (B) Embley, Curley, Lekkas; (R)
A.Dimattina
Has anyone seen the Jets coach? That
was what was being asked even from Round 1 when the Manager never once appeared
in the coaching box leaving most of the year's running of the team to a
caretaker appointee. The Jets were just unable to do much in the season
and it took the very occasional bags from their ageing forward line stars of the
past to even provide much of a challenge to their opposition. They were
subjected to the lowest scores and were on the wrong end of the biggest margins
for the season. Their season highlight was undoubtedly their first win in Round
12 when gave the unwary Roughriders a taste of their own medicine who had just
two weeks before inflicted the Bulldogs only loss of the season. The Jets
three wins all coming late in the season.
Chicago
Lions: (F) Lucas,
Waterhouse, Whitnall, Fevola, Hall, Leppitsch; (M) Rogers-c, Barry, Lawrence,
Nicks; (B) Barker, Bartlett, Leoncelli, Solomon-vc, P.Dimattina, J.McDonald,
Cox, Kilpatrick; (R) Ramanauskas, Makepeace
The Lions for the most part dominated the
competition simply by holding down the second possy on the ladder and had only
suffered one loss for the first half of the minor round. Early they were seen as
perhaps fortunate, having secured wins over more fancied opposition and only
drawing a game against the Bulldogs once in the premiership season. But by the
end of the minor round there was no argument over their second possy holding and
they had by that time struck fear into all but the other best teams of the
year. As it was they took out the Bulldogs in the unlikely Preliminary
Final victory that saw them party well into the night before fronting up the
following week and making a decent game of it against the the Cobras in the
blockbuster final. The Lions managed to strike a few nasty chords with
other Managers when they secured a transfer of players with the Devils in the
minor round (The Cobras also doing something similar that astoundingly draw
little if any similar protest) and this boosted their prospects no end for a
flag. The Lions were a painful outfit to have to come up against at the
best of times and it seemed from an opponents perspective that if you kept
Whitnall and Lucas quiet then Fevola or Waterhouse would take up the challenge
late in the game and tear you to shreds - again another reminder of the
Australian cricket team.
Murray
Mystics: (F) Loewe, Abraham,
Cresswell, Stoneham, Moorcroft; (M) D.King-vc, J.Stevens, Kemp, Pike, Rintoul; (B)
A.Williams, B.Voss, Sierakowski, Capuano; (R) Guerra, J.Byrne
If there was ever a team that could be classed as
the most unpopular team in the League then that label rests firmly and securely
with the Mystics who kept pressure on all other teams by consistent poaching
attempts and firing off messages predicting wins of forthcoming clashes (even
against the like of Cobras and Bulldogs!). It was just that the Mystics
were so committed to improving a lacklustre outfit leftover from the departure
of their previous overseas coach who wasn't obviously happy with the early
season losses and prediction of not making the finals. The Mystics
recruited and poached as much as they possibly could to bolster the forward line
and while they succeeded to some degree they were still unable to make much of
an impact on the eventual outcome that saw them miss out on a finals
berth. But the experience gained is there for next year!
Portside
Prowlers: (F) Ph.Matera,
C.Grant, Dew, Hammil, Bowden, P.Lynch; (M) B.Holland-vc, Barlow, Francou, S.King,
Fosdike, Motlop; (B) B.Graham, B.Ratten, Harwood-c, Stafford, R.Jones, Turnbull; (R)
Haselby, R.O'Loughlin, S.Freeborn
The reigning premiers (ie: Manager, under 1999
identity as "Alberton Agressors") were an outfit that were clearly a
competitive one throughout the year, in spite of the setback in losing Mat
Richardson to a long term injury that saw his departure from the side early on.
The Prowlers were typically aggressive in all their encounters and only seemed
to lose against better sides simply due to the sheer difference in firepower.
Injuries hampered an otherwise fairly successful campaign and their eventual
placement at fifth at the conclusion of the season was perhaps the best
indicator of how there whole season went - never able to penetrate the top two
but generally hovering between 3rd and 6th on the ladder all season. They
came close to providing a few upsets but also succumbed to a few
themselves. They just weren't able to repeat the outstanding performance
of the previous year.
Oakland
Roughriders: (F) Carey, Vardy,
S.Rocca, B.Holland, O'Loughlin, Darcy; (M) Koutoufides, Hickmott, Long-c,
Burgoyne-vc, Luff; (B) M.Michael; (R) Pavlich, Adkins, Crowell
Quite probably the most erratic team of the
season the Roughriders lived up to their name by being inconsistent and
providing rough rides for supporters and opponents alike. They were the
only team to inflict a loss on the Bulldogs in the premiership season and yet
too rounds later succumbed to the cellar dwellers, Jets, handing them their
first win of the season, and then followed that up with a steam rolling
performance of the eventual Grand Finalists. At least they provided
unpredictability to the competition and ensured nothing could be taken on face
value. They started off the season with the most aggressive bidding
campaign of all teams, securing a line up of 'overpaid' players with the highest
wage bill of any club for the year - and as such were firmly supported by the IFFL
Players Association! Their line up was as inconsistent as the team was with
irregular contributors coming from their stars. But at one stage they held
what would otherwise have been the highest score for the league when they all
clicked together. In the end you couldn't put a label on where they might
finish - definitely a finals contender, but you would not be surprised if they
even took out the flag! Perhaps the eventual seventh could be looked upon
as a big disappointment.
