TEAM LIST HIGHLIGHTS
A very short insight into some of the more dominating factors from each team in terms of personnel that remained in their line up throughout the year and were major contributors in the respective classifications as far as goalkicking was concerned. These players were the main contributors and are grouped together in (B)acks, (M)idfielders, (F)orwards and (R)ookies. -c and -vc denote the nominated and preferred captain and vice captain as at season's end.
Brentford
Bees: (F) Ph.Matera, C.Grant,
Farmer, C-Collins, McLeod; (M) R.James-c, Cameron-vc; (B) Pickett, McCartney
Throughout the season the Bees stationed themselves in the top 8.
Most other sides found that when they hit form they were a nasty outfit to contend with.
Later in the season Pickett was the sensation, kicking some 36 goals from 13 or
14 games including a bag of six that gave the Bees a much needed injection of
goalsneak talent into their backline, something that had been missing from their
side all year. Their forward line was consistently strong but the midfield
and backline needed more goal talent to make the side a true power in the
competition. Perhaps the biggest frustration was the ability to
consistently kick big scores, while the Bees rarely had a bad day on the field,
their scores of around the 90 point mark on average was just not enough to
contend with the senior teams in the competition. Nearer to the end of the
season there was a serious possibility of dropping out of the top 8 as Pickett's
goals dried up, but they rallied and In the end they did not get beyond the
Elimination Final - something which probably summed up their season aptly.
Bakewell
Cyclones: (F) Hammil, Molloy,
Moorcroft, Buckley, Silvagni; (M) Yze-c, T.Cook, West-vc, Motlop; (B) McVeigh,
Hilton
Try as they might the Cyclones were just
unable to crack it in the big league this year with so many players able only to kick
big bags on so few occasions. Their season started off reasonably poorly
in spite of a first round win, which was their highest score, of just 11 goals
until round 12 when they finally broke 100 points, and about the same time
Moorcroft came into their squad after being dropped the week before by the Lions
- the same week he kicked 6 and took that memorable mark. Unable to kick
truly competitive scores most of their wins came against other struggling
sides. Their backline
strength was the result of successful poaches off the eventual premiers and it
seemed that if one player kicked a few goals, the rest did not. A very
disappointing season when one assumed more promise was there, one which the Cyclones will be all the more experienced
from.
Bendigo Devils:
(F) Rioli, A.Rocca, McRae, L.Davis, Waterhouse; (M)
Beaumont, Robran-c, Barlow; (B) Ling, M.Robbins; (R) Peverill, Didak
Unfortunately for the Devils it could be argued that
it may have been the luck of the
season fixture that essentially spelled their doom. Right in round
1 when they suffered their biggest defeat from the eventual premiers,
Kingfishers they were on the back foot - to put it mildly. From there they never recovered, unable to find form through
the likes of A.Rocca and early on McKernan, while McRae (early on), Rioli and
Waterhouse spent many weeks out of the side through injury. Gradually
their season went from bad to worse, unable to notch up a win until Round 8
against a side sharing the cellar with them. Near the end of the season
the Management gave up and left the rookies to play in the backline, incurring
the wrath of the league through regular fines and the side finished at the end
of the year in the cellar - sadly, for the second successive season. Luck,
form and injury plagued the Devils and it just highlights how fickle a
competition like this can be.
Darwin Dolphins:
(F) Hird, Lynch, Bradshaw, McKernan, Perrie,
Robertson; (M) Bizzell-c, N.Davis-vc, Goodwin, N.Stevens, D.King, S.King,
M.Stevens, Stafford, Edwards; (B) B.Graham, Guerra, Croft; (R) Hazell
Arguably the strongest ever IFFL side to take to the
field, the Dolphins finished the season on a very disappointing note, being
eliminated in the Preliminary final after losing just two games previously for
the whole season and winning the Minor Premiership. The Dolphins first
loss was early in the season and it appeared they would be a very competitive
outfit throughout the year - but they did not emerge as the ultimate premiership
favourites until midway through the year when the luck of recruiting S.Cummings
and McKernan (who suddenly hit form) was with them and all of a sudden their
lowest score for a number of weeks was about 21 goals. They seemed
unbeatable, invincible and unable to be toppled off the ladder. Perhaps
the most memorable moment of the season was winning the minor premiership which
they literally clinched in the final round of the season, having shadowed the
Kingfishers for some time and gaining small percentage ground each week.
Finally their big final minor round big win prevailed and they snatched it from the
Kingfishers grasp. The Dolphins broke a lot of records, including margins
and season highest scores, but at the end of the day it is the premiership that
counts, and they fell just 7 points short in contending it, in an "off-week". The
clearly superior team of the competition never made it for the much anticipated
showdown against the Kingfishers.
Golden
Grove Goannas: (F) M.Lloyd,
B.Hall, Mensch, Garlick, Hocking; (M) Callaghan-c, K.Johnson, Gardiner-vc,
Knights; (B) J.Longmuir, Barnard, Crouch; (R) Riewoldt, Giansiracusa
The initial frantic bidding for Lloyd's contract was
what gave the Goannas a mighty edge in the competition, although they had to contend
with a couple of strikes throughout the year due to large wage bills and
struggling finances. But with the experience of the last couple of years
behind them, the Goannas were able to juggle their side around and ensure their
full list was available just about every week. Only when Lloyd was off
canter in one of his rare one goal outings, or serving suspension did the
Goannas ever look vulnerable, and ultimately this was when they suffered their defeats in
the season. A memorable win was when Lloyd kicked 10 goals, more than half
the team's score, which just went to show how much contribution he made to the
side. A couple of decent acquisitions in Hall (who started in defence
before moving up forward and going berserk), Callaghan and emerging talent Justin
Longmuir - in addition to the odd four goal blast from Barnard ensured the
Goannas season ticked along nicely and a genuine threat to the flag. But
come finals time their two best talent at the goalface in Lloyd and Hall were
serving suspension and before they could return the side was eliminated in the
finals - had've they been available, perhaps the end result would have been
different.
Groovy West
Greyhounds: (F) Tredrea,
Hudson, Goodes, P.Williams, M.White; (M) J.Fraser, S.Black-c; McManus-vc; (B)
B.Scott, L.Brown; (R) Cunnigham, Kerr
Our only Western Australian representative in the
league this year showed an obvious tendency to pick up some decent local talent
to bolster a side that on paper at the beginning of the season commanded a fair
bit of respect. But they relied heavily on the initial pick up of Scott
Cummings who was threatening to kick a ton of goals for the season with his best
ever pre-season and weight figures, but it fell in a heap when injury and later
form meant a most indifferent season and a soon set of marching orders from the
Greyhounds camp to seek greener pastures. A favourable draw and a
consistent and solid effort from their team then helped them to remain in the
top 8 for the whole season, including a top four posting for a number of weeks
during the year. The team was almost a mirror image of Richmond - doing
enough to win the games to keep them near the top of the ladder, falling over
against far superior sides and quite clearly not being given the respect from
other Managers that the side obviously deserved. They went into the finals
series with an underdog tag but a recent controversial win over the Lions who
they met in the Elimination final and won under even more controversial
circumstances. But their stay in the finals series was short lived and
another team that had been doing well all year eventually determined their fate.
Kryal
Kingfishers: (F) Dew,
Dixon, Everritt, Fevola, B.Harvey, Schwarz; (M) Barker-c, Wanganeen-vc,
Br.Holland, Hotton, Koops; (B) Clayton, Embley, Bartlett, Schell; (R) Milne,
McPhee, Nicholls
The writing was on the wall the minute the initial
bidding system was concluded with the likes of N.Holland and Dixon on the half forward
line with Everritt and Fevola floating around the full forward line and a touted
emerging super goalsneak in Dew. The Kingfishers were going to be the team
that would stake a genuine claim on a premiership from the outset of the minor
round. While Nick Holland ended up being injured for almost the whole year
and subsequently told to find somewhere else to eat up salary $$ the Kingfishers
goalkicking stocks were greatly boosted by non-forwards in the likes of Barker,
Brodie Holland and
Wanganeen who were all contributors and the team looked fairly
invincible by midway through the season, holding highest score and biggest
winning margin honours (until the super Dolphins side emerged). A mid
season slump - if you could call it that - saw them suddenly seem beatable even
though they weren't being beaten! Scores of just over 100 points were
obtained with obvious struggle and no one kicking more than 3 goals in the line
up, until a couple of rounds left before the finals when they hit their straps again and emerged as the true force they threatened right
at the start. But that mid season slump of sorts cost them one thing, the
minor premiership, gradually losing percentage and in the end unable to hold off a surging
Dolphins who overtook them on top of the ladder in the very final minor round of
the season. This is something that must have left a bitter taste in the team's
mouth! The Kingfishers went through to the Grand Final in straight sets,
not having to face the Dolphins, and must have been licking their lips when the Dolphins didn't turn up (with due
respect of course to the Timberwolves) and in the end their class and season
record spoke for itself as they massacred a hapless opposition and took out the
Premiership - yet again another first time Manager in IFFL!
Lachy's
Leopards: (F) M.Richardson,
Carey, Green; (M) Keating-c, M.Lappin-vc, Woewodin; (B) Hart, Rawlings; (R)
Doering
The Leopards were somewhat of a disappointment in
season 2001 in that their big guns were rarely on the field together and when
they were, rarely actually decided to form a bond together and work through a
strategy to contribute collective goals to the scoreline. Two massive names headed
their forward line in Mat Richardson and later, Wayne Carey but the latter was out of
the way through constant injury problems. Of course on a couple of
occasions the two did spark together and this in turn ensured the Leopards a
pulsating victory in a couple of unlikely matches - but there just was not enough talent
in the rest of the list to support the fledging stars up forward and if either
played and did not bag four or five goals, the rest of the side was generally
unable to muster up much more than that collectively. As such the side suffered big
defeats and low scoring opportunities. The Leopards were not always lucky
in their bidding for player services, often being outdone by a few $$ which in
turn drove the team to making large unrealistic bids later in the year and
subsequently losing player services through striking action. The Leopards
will be much better for the experience and will look forward to a much more
successful 2002.
Chicago
Lions: (F) Lucas,
Caracella, R.Smith, Moorcroft, Burgoyne, Rogers; (M) Hasleby, Misiti, Leoncelli,
Nicks-c, Hulme; (B) Lekkas, Solomon, Kilpatrick
If there is one thing the Lions Management
committee will be remembered for in the League more than anything else is their
consistent strategic approaches to recruiting new talent and each and every game
and unwavering determination to make it a successful season. The Lions management often assisted the League in pointing out
errors in scores and anomalies in motion processing and were clearly the team
that was generally on the ball more than any other in the league. For that
reason they not only deserved success but they rightfully should have gotten it!
Amazingly, the Lions season is a tale of misfortune, frustration and downright
bad luck. Who would forget the week the team decided to give Moorcroft his
marching orders after an indifferent contribution to that point - the very week
he took mark of the year and kicked 6 goals? And that was not an isolated
incident for the Lions hierachy who must have collectively thrown their arms up
in despair on more occasions than any other side this year when uncontributing
name players decided to do something the week (or after) they were dumped. The Lions were
coming off a successful 2000 campaign where they reached the Grand Final and
found themselves again with many names (Rogers, Lucas, etc) that had helped them get
there last year. But these same players had inconsistent 2001 outings and
the line up would kick 18 goals one week but rebound the next and kick just
three goals between them - perhaps noneso more indicative than their Round 3
and 4 outings, kicking 3 goals and 23 goals respectively! A few missed
opportunities on the recruiting front did not help their cause and later in the
season dropping players "Moorcroft-style" ensured a few more
frustrating moments occurred. In the end the Lions were teetering on the
edge of a finals berth and providing their fans with heartstopping moments
leaving it right to the death to get in on the very last round of
the season. The Management board put absolutely everything into it to make
the finals - at one minute they looked like they would get in easily and created
some genuine havoc but only to come out kick a low score the following week
against a lacklustre opposition and suffer another setback - their fans needing
to be fitted with pacemakers. But in the end
they made it in, knocking out the Racquets and meeting up with the Greyhounds
who had beaten them by a point or two a few weeks before. But as if to sum
up their season in one punctuating point, the Lions were so hellbent on making
the finals that salary became a secondary issue and the player that would have
won them the final spent the weekend fishing - and thus ended their 2001
campaign on a sour note. One thing is for sure - the Lions should not be
underestimated in 2002 when they have a lot to prove!
McLeod
Maulers: (F) Jarman, Koutoufides,
Schofield, Akermanis, D.Lewis; (M) Ratten-c, J.Johnson-vc, C.Fletcher; (B) Ward,
Kirk; (R) T.Clarke
Unfortunately for the Maulers their season
was not one to remember, being introduced to the League by the Lions coach and
initially providing a lot of promise in what was destined to be a crackerjack
rivalry between the two clubs. But a consistent lack of involvement in
recruiting new talent to the side ended up costing the Maulers a real crack at
having a chance in IFFL season 2001, as their whole goalkicking load essentially
came down to their main forwards in Jarman and Kouta. When those two
weren't around then Johnson and Akermanis were there to lend some support but at
the end of the day the team was just not competitive enough to get very far in a
competition that needed the management committee to look at new talent and new
ways of structuring the side. They even allowed two of their top stars to
join that rival club when they decided not to defend their poaches, instead
lodging unrealistic and desperate ones (that were probably never going to
succeed) on the two eventual Grand Finalists - at least that was one foresight
they had!! So those big lofty poaches came late in the year -
but too late to have any effect on their opposition and their own ability to win
games in the competition and the Maulers finished the season second to bottom,
and only then by percentage and a late win against the cellar dwellers as it
could have been the opposite way around just as easily.
Youngtown
Racquets: (F) Whitnall, Burns,
Burton, N.Thompson, N.Brown, Ball, Bruce; (M) D.Clarke, Francou-vc; (B) J.Carr-c,
B.Voss, C.Mooney; (R) Copeland
Having drawn upon a year's experience in the GFL
competition the Racquets expanded into the IFFL competition and initially bidded well and successfully. As their team colours suggest there is also
a fervent following of the Geelong team and a large number of those players were
signed into the Racquets ranks. There probably denotes some of the way the
team was to go throughout the season, a successful Geelong outing often meant a
mirrored image in the IFFL for the Racquets, otherwise the Racquets had to rely
on some of their major drawcards to kick goals and get them over the line.
The Racquets teetered in and out of the top 8 for much of the season and early
on looked like they were going to fall by the way side, but when the right
players in Whitnall, Burns and Thompson clicked together the Racquets proved
they were capable of downing almost anything thrown at them. But sadly
form and injuries were yet another influence on this unpredictable outfit with
Burns and Burton spending many weeks out of the action through injury (and
suspension also for the former) while goalkicking form at times eluded the likes
of Thompson, Ball and Whitnall to have any consistency in the line up - perhaps
only Nathan Brown was the regular reliable goal contributor for the side. The
Racquets season ended sourly when it had all but sewn up a finals berth only to
see it slip away with a dreadful couple of losses in the last rounds, the final
minor round being the clincher when they lost to the Lions and gave up their
finals spot to them. But a year's experience in the IFFL will only help
the Racquets cause and as they were in GFL 2000, watch out when they do get the
right luck and fortunes coming their way.
Dublin
Shamrocks: (F) B.Johnson,
Merenda, Camporeale, C.Cornes, M.Voss, Croad; (M) R.Houlihan, Tivendale-c,
J.Bolton-vc, Schwass; (B) J.Brown, Fiora, Notting; (R) Pettifer, K.Cornes
The only international representative in IFFL 2001
was this great team from Ireland. Although their line up on paper did not
seem to boast what some would credit a top four contender the team showed
throughout the year that it had the right formula to apply to almost any match
and win. In more cases than not their winning scores were only around the
13 to 14 goal mark, yet they just were able to keep the opponents at bay and the
term "Luck of the Irish" stuck like mud against the wall in an uncanny
display of fortune and consistency. Like the Cyclones, the Shamrocks cause
was certainly benefited by a couple of gift poaches on one of the top sides in the
competition that helped their playing stocks. On more occasions than not they
also seemed to have some luck at the recruitment table ensuring that their list
ticked over finely and they were able to maintain a decent hold on a top four
ladder rung for basically the duration of the season - including a couple of short stints on top
of the ladder. Luck of the draw may also come into account as they did
play three of the four bottom teams during the first five rounds of the season
(which were repeated at the end of the year) - but they still had to win and
still had to kick the winning score and they were able to consistently annoy
other Managers at being able to do this on a weekly basis. Undoubtedly
non-classified forwards like
J.Brown and Pettifer made some difference while their leadership
generally provided them with rushed behinds each week. The Shamrocks
finished the season on an "expected" note finishing in the top four, essentially only being
outplayed by the eventual premiers - and really it was only the two major teams that
seemed to be able to have them licked at any time during the year.
Tableland
Tigers: (F) Vardy, Welsh,
Power, Lord, Ottens, Pavlich, Chick; (M) Ramanauskas-vc, Darcy, Bandy-c; (B)
McKee, S.Cox
For the Tigers it is another case of a forgettable
season with only a few highlights out what could have been possibly a very good
year. For the part it was a matter of form and changeable roles within the
goalkicking ranks of the respective AFL sides. Players like Vardy, Welsh
and Power suffered from form plagued opportunities and when not injured, found themselves playing at times in the local leagues. Players
like Ottens, Lord, Chick and Pavlich fulfilled as many defender or non
goalkicking roles as they did spend time up forward and the Tigers just never
were able to get a consistently firing forwardline contributing a decent winning
scoreline in any given week. There were a couple of highlights throughout
the season when things finally clicked for them but they were few and far
between and the Tigers also suffered from not getting the right recruiting
stocks into their side - although not for lack of trying on some occasions as
they were very active. By the end of the season the Management had other
things on their mind and the Tigers fell by the way side and had a short stint
sharing cheese with rats in the cellar. But they did finish the season on
a big high - downing the top four side Shamrocks and kicking 19 goals.
Cedar
Creek Timberwolves: (F) S.Rocca,
Tarrant, O'Loughlin, Riccuito, Crawford; (M) F.Francis-vc, Maxfield; (B)
Lockyer-c, Marsh, Headland, Betheras; (R) T.Wilson, Morrell
Quite probably the most erratic team of the
season, you just never knew what the Timberwolves were going to do from week to
week. Quite brilliant one week and taking out almost any opponent thrown
at them, only to suffer at the hands of form and role reversals a week or two
later leaving the Management pondering on whether they were even a chance at
making the finals. In fact history tells us they made it all the way to
the Grand Final and beat quite probably the best team of the year in the
Preliminary final but yet put up not even so much as a whimper on Grand Final
day - and that could just about sum up their season in one statement! The
Timberwolves in the dying minor rounds were quite clearly earmarked as a
probable drop-out from the finals race after some poor performances were put
in. But they rallied and tore apart the opponents to easily make the
finals in the end and be seen as somewhat as an enigma in many other club
managements' eyes. You only need to glance at the highlighted player list above to see how it
all came about. Tarrant, Rocca and O'Loughlin almost always kicked a goal
or two, but rarely did they click and on many occasions did not even kick many
goals individually - but when they did the Timberwolves had the support within
their ranks to ensure the bags when they came contributed to a hefty
total. Then there were players like Riccuito and Francis who on the
occasion added their own bags of two, three and even four. But of course the big story
was rookie Wilson - when he played and kicked goals the Timberwolves had another
dimension added to them. The Rookie of the year was inconsistent and not
always available but ensured opponents respected the Timberwolves when they
played them. If they won - instead of celebrating victories, they often just breathed sighs of
relief at getting the four points. The Timberwolves erratic and enigmatic season took them to the
Grand Final but the day didn't belong to them and unfortunately ended in a
record breaking loss that will be indelibly etched into IFFL folklore
forever. But runners up is nothing to cry about!
