TEAM LIST HIGHLIGHTS
A very short insight into some of the more dominating factors from each team in terms of personnel that remained in their line up throughout the year and were major contributors in the respective classifications as far as goalkicking was concerned. These players were the main contributors and are grouped together in (B)acks, (M)idfielders, (F)orwards and (R)ookies. -c and -vc denote the nominated and preferred captain and vice captain as at season's end or for the main during the season. IFFL#2 was the first second league of this competition to expand to the Internet after enough interest was finally registered to run up a new league. As a result the competition did not commence til round 3, the first couple of rounds having been byes (the competition was nearly ready for round 2, but a couple of slow bidding coaches held it up for everyone else!). On with the details...
Celtic
Bhoys: (F) J.Farmer; C.Bruce;
Cousins; P.Williams; A.Koutoufides (M) Giansiracusa-c; Leoncelli-vc; Archer; (B)
A.Kingsley; Saddington; (R) R.Hargrave
This was one of two teams operated by the same
coaching staff who were content with letting their team sort itself out on match
day every round. The team suffered from a lot of poaching action and
caretaker coaching staff came in to improve the running of the team and recruit
some more players. Later in the season the Bhoys did some poaching of
their own and brought some big names to the club but it was all a bit too little
too late and the club could only amass three wins for the year in what was an
ever changing list. There were no real stand outs in their list but their
two club leaders both kicked more individual goals than anyone else in the list,
including the forwards.
Bakewell
Cyclones: (F) Neitz;
Richardson; Goodes; Voss; O'Loughlin; Yze; (M) D.King-vc; Misiti-c; Darcy; (B)
M.Carr; L.Brown; Lawrence; Poulton
The Cyclones held one notable achievement if
nothing else and that was having an unbeaten record against the eventual
Premiers including a qualifying final win when the odds were seemingly stacked
against them. The side had a real mixed bag up in the forward line
probably punctuated by the fact they boasted the season's Coleman Medalist who
himself was not even averaging a goal a game there for about six weeks.
Richo had an enigmatic as ever year in front of the sticks and if not for a late
season form surge might have been staring at his worst efforts up forward in
spite of some sidelining due to injury. This in turn was reflected on the
scoreboard with seven wins straight, including the qualifying final to finish
off their season. Consistency was not a big plus for the Cyclones that in
spite of their late season strong finish that saw them nab a top four spot going
into the finals, there were at least four rounds where they could only score
between four and six goals. Rumours had it that there was also a minor on
the senior coaching staff list!
Darwin Dolphins:
(F) K.Kingsley; S.Rocca; P.Burgoyne; B.Johnson;
Garlick; Fevola; R.Burns; (M) Nicks-vc; Chambers; T.Johnstone; Lockyer;
Beaumont; (B) Schell-c; Wirrpunda; A.Williams; Wheatley; (R) Morrell; C.Brown
Unfortunately the Dolphins are becoming one of those
teams that over the years will be remembered for the wrong reasons - finals
footy failures! The Dolphins missed out on the minor premiership only due
to percentage, which ironically was measured in the massive win by the Panthers
in Round 15 when the two teams played, had've the margin of over 100 points been
even just under half that - given everything else having gone on as it did, the
minor premiership was theirs! The Dolphins boasted the leading
goalkicker about half way during the season, Kingsley, when he suddenly
announced he was aiming for the Coleman medal, from then on he kicked half the
tally he had managed to that point, with more than half the season to
play. The Dolphins boasted some real talent in their forward line that was
when on fire, as evidenced in the season highest 32.19.211 scoreline against the
Lizards, was more destructive than any other in the league. But the
goalkicking form of Fevola and Burns in particular saw them not only more of a hindrance
than individual assets, but regularly interchanged options against each
other. The Dolphins would certainly rue their first qualifying final loss
against the Thunder. Leaving out five goal hero Morrell was a stunning
omission that cost them the match. While they still wouldn't have gotten
beyond the preliminary final (since they would have faced Panthers, Thunder or
Sparks, all of which outscored them that day) it was a bitter pill for them to
swallow. The Dolphins bowed out in successive finals, just like they did
in 2001 where they boasted arguably a stronger list, and in 2000 they bowed out
after trying so hard to get their. One of the major round unluckiest teams
in the competition, their day will come for them... but hopefully not before the
minor round luck they have been enjoying for so long goes astray.
Northcote
Dragons:
(F) Ph.Matera; McKernan; A.Lynch; Milne; N.Davis;
Pettifer; (M) Ramanauskas-c; Pike-vc; (B) Alvey; Baker; Shattock; (R) S.Burgoyne;
S.Johnson; Saunders; G.Ablett; McGough; Reynolds
Enigmatic as one would label a bunch of players, is
probably the best word to describe the Dragons. The only real consistency
they showed during the year was the ability to beat lower placed teams below
them and lose to the ones above them - of course there were exceptions to the
rule, but the Dragons could at least be relied on that feat. Their scoring
however, was anything but consistent, with some massive scores obtained one week
and lowly ones on any given other, frustrating the selection committee. On
the plus side most of it was still happening in their favour, and the Dragons
were a team that could not be given an ounce of complacency against, lest they
overrun you. However, the coaching staff also had a vested interest in
another team in another competition, which saw them try some experimenting on
this team to test their own skills and the luck of the cards that fate would
also deal them. Huge bids to ensure players came to their club were
regularly successful, but also late in the season the finances were really
straining and players were often left out of team selection on the basis that
the club would not want players striking under any circumstances. As a
result many winnable games, especially when the likes of nine goals were left
out from two players, turned into losses and the club slowly sank into the
financial grave it had dug for itself. Many goalkickers were thus unable
to have any impact on the scoreboard. All things being equal, forgetting
the salary cap and affordability aspect, the side still boasted one of the best
forward lines in the league, let alone the rookies the club picked up,
particularly Johnson who was a late season revelation. Next year more
attention on their finances may keep these players kicking goals for the club.
East
Keilor Eagles: (F)
Riccardi; C.C-Collins; Lucas; Caracella; (M) Stafford,
Woewodin, Gardiner, A.Stevens; (B) N.Brown; R.O'Keefe; Jackovich-c
Just four wins could be amassed by the
struggling Eagles in 2002 and with the second lowest points aggregate in the
league were perhaps a little fortunate not to finish lower than their 12th
ranking at season's conclusion. They did manage a win against one of the
top four sides and had a clean sheet of wins against the Lizards who themselves
were an unknown quantity for much of the year but the Eagles found the going
tough at times and were rarely able to break even the ten goal barrier, their
second win for the season not coming until Round 11, and their last two wins in
the last two successive minor rounds. Once the initial few rounds were
past the Eagles pretty much settled on the team they had to date and kept all
their recruiting down to a minimum. Their backline really looked like
backmen, which in itself ensured the team had also the second lowest defensive
score in the league. The team list hovered around only 22-24 players and
at one stage through a retiring player actually dipped below the minimum,
forcing a random enlist that brought O'Keefe to the club who outscored every
other backman from henceforth. The fact that Riccardi was their leading
goalkicker and the only player to kick more than 20 goals in the side, probably
summed up their disappointing season.
Kardinia
Killers: (F) P.Vardy; B.Harvey;
Graham; Barker; Power, Hammil; (M) Tivendale-vc; Kerr; J.Carr-c; Gilbee;
Makepeace; (B) Hille; Piciaone; Stenglein; (R) Cloke; Mott
The Killers certainly started the year in a blaze of
glory and were sitting top, unbeaten, after 7 rounds, and still equal top the
following week, which included a win against the eventual Minor and Season
Premiers, Panthers. But what happened after that no one really knows for sure
because the team suffered a shocking slump that saw them win just one game for
the remainder of the year against a non-finalist contender. Form reversal
and injuries probably taking the most blame as the league "found out"
perhaps the Killers game plan and turned it to their ultimate advantage.
Apart from one round where only four goals were kicked they were remarkably
consistent through their losses, with nothing under 10 goals and nothing over 13
goals kicked in any given round, for only one win. Consistency was
certainly on their side but doesn't always win you matches and the side saw a
fairly frustrating weekly dilemma that panned out for most of the year.
They did not boast any real potency up forward in terms of spearhead but both
Vardy and Harvey had consistent years, in spite of injury, and bagged over 25
goals each. Graham was certainly a hit early, with most, if not all, of
his 15 goals coming in the opening rounds of the season which truly showed the
difference for the Killers in amassing a winning total. Tivendale was also
a reliable midfielder but he kicked more points than goals and was a source of
frustration himself. The early wins did give the team enough on the board
to contest the finals but the Dragons accounted for them in week #1.
Lachy's
Leopards: (F) Dew, Croad;
Pavlich; Br.Holland; Wilson; Cresswell; (M) Ling; S.King-c; Smart; Simpson-vc;
West; J.Bolton; (B) Headland; McKee; B.Scott
The Leopards coaching staff were the main impetus
for a second league to be run this year, continually checking up for a spot
having only narrowly missed out on a coaching appointment in League #1.
They also recruited another coach to perform CEO roles with a rival club and the
spots were fast filled. But their experience in their first season last year was
certainly something the team benefited from, particularly early in the piece
when they came out with all guns blazing and look like smokies to really take it
up to the more fancied clubs throughout the season, particularly when they
opened up their season account with a win over the early flag favourites,
Dolphins, in a classic 8 point thriller. The Leopards used the market to
keep turning their list over and were active on the poach front, particularly
late in the season when they secured some players from their related team that
had a few other coaches raising eyebrows - but the football gods were not
smiling, since those same players had no impact in the finals or late season due
to injuries and form problems themselves and the Leopards were wondering why
they even paid the big bucks to get those players across in the first place (if
you know the old 70's VFL film starring Jack Thompson called the "The
Club" - bit like the tasmanian recruit - actually surprised Eddie didn't
get that film shown on the TV in the week leading up to the AFL grand final this
year!!). One of the highlights of the year was Brodie Hollands 8 goals in
round 2 or 3, but could only amass 8 more for the year. Dew and Croad were
great stalwarts for the club with over 30 goals, while Wilson, a late season
poach was injured and did not contribute in the finals at all when it was
expected he would; but by far their best option was a defender named Headland
who bagged over 25 goals for the year. The Leopards would be looking for a
brighter season next year.
Longford
Lizards: (F) Hird;
A.Rocca; J.Longmuir; Welsh; Molloy; Crawford; Gehrig; (M) Burton-c; C.Fletcher;
Chapman; McMahon; (B) D.Haynes; S.Wiggins; (R) Judd; Birss; Dal Santo
Perhaps a side that would be more
"rightly" disappointed than most in their eventual season's ranking
would be the Lizards, who promised a lot to begin with but faded out of the
scene later in the season due to some pretty bad injuries to two key forwards
another whose form waned. Rocca was certainly the most consistent
throughout the year but could rarely add three or more to the contribution side
of things, while the club's barometer appeared to be Welsh who was averaging
more than two and a half goals per game before he was struck down by a
(Lizard's) season ending injury. Hird was also out of the equation when
his face got mangled and the early season form of Justin Longmuir where he
regularly kicked three goals, turned into wayward 0.5 or 1.5 type scorelines.
Most of their wins came before Welsh exited the scene and their last win was
obtained in Round 15 over a worthy opponent in the Thunder and for the remainder
of the season were mainly fighting against top four sides. However, it was
probably the last minor round when they capitulated against the Eagles and
amassed just three goals that was their sour note for the season, and having an
unflattering winless record against a team not far from the bottom rung on the
ladder. In many ways it was a frustrating season for the Lizards, they
lost Green to a backdoor poaching action and sometimes when they were on fire
they could not even break a win, and when they were competitive in close
encounters they often were the ones to come out losers. This is probably
accentuated by their Round 9 encounter with the Dolphins - despite scoring one
of the higher totals of the round they had to meet a team who kicked one of the
highest IFFL ever scores. Not a lot went right for the Lizards in 2002 but at
least the experience of running a team should hold them in good stead for a more
successful 2003 campaign.
Piccadilly
Panthers: (F) B.Hall;
M.Lloyd; D.Bradshaw; P.Everritt; C.Cornes; R.Robertson; Lord; McRae; (M)
Bandy-c; Clayton-vc; Fraser; Bode; Goodwin; Edwards; (B) Doughty; Schauble;
Simmonds; (R) Medhurst; Johncock; X.Clarke; Q.Lynch
For the team that picked up both Minor
Premiers and the eventual Premiership, you can't really say a lot in terms of
what went wrong during the year, because very little did. The Panthers
were a team that had seemingly half the Crows side in their list and since they
went on to finish the AFL minor round in the top 3, the Panthers were always
going to be well served by these same players. The Panthers were for the
main part of the season just unbeatable and able to really pull out the measures
when they were needed, none moreso in the grand final when they faced only one
of a select handful of teams that was able to chalk up wins against either of
the top two minor round sides. The Panthers found a nemesis in the
Cyclones who they suffered two of their three season losses against and the only
other loss was against the Killers who pulled a one point victory out of the
bag, when they were on a real roll beating most clubs in the competition.
The Panthers list was supreme and while they had names like Lloyd, Bradshaw and
Hall all of these were hardly, if ever, playing in the team at the same time in
any given week as all were ousted for lengthy periods due to (respectively)
injury; form and suspension! Of these only Hall was considered their real
spearhead, so the team list was highlighted by the fact that no one kicked 50
goals when the minor premiership was taken. In fact many of their
midfielders were not even averaging a goal a game by the end of the minor round,
but seemingly one or two of them were taking turns popping up with their twos or
threes, that when added to an already potent forward line, just smashed the game
apart. The Panthers had a minor hiccup in the first week of the finals
before hitting their straps again and continuing the trend of first year manager
premierships!
Plymouth
Argyle
Pilgrims: (F) Black, Merrington,
Hudson, J.Bowden; (M) S.Burns; Bartlett; S.Motlop-c; Porter-vc; Jacobs; (B)
Rawlings; D.Gaspar; D.Kellaway; D.Fletcher; (R) L.Hodge
The Pilgrims were the only international
representative in IFFL#2 and related to the coaching staff of the Leopards team.
Early on in the season the Pilgrims who had a serviceable list were finding
themselves playing a defensive mould of footy that was essentially and
effectively reducing the opponents game to that of their own (they had the
lowest against points in the league)! For that
reason they were able to chalk up some big victories early with a 3-match win
purple patch from Round 5 that included the scalp of the eventual grand
finalists Sparks, while the Thunder fell victim a few rounds later. In
many of their losses they were also able to hold their opponents to low winning
victories ensuring they were kept in an unlikely position of making hit on the
top 8. However, their season backed off quite markedly as the minor round
drew to a close, getting involved in some aggravated poaching against other
sides that in the end saw some worthwhile players of their own having to seek
greener pastures due to the hits on the finances from some of these massive
successful poach bids. The team was also the lowest scoring in the league,
some 200 less points (or two goals per round) than the next worst team in the
competition, or an incredible 13 goals per round less than the eventual minor
premiers!! Eyebrows from other coaching quarters were also raised when the
team succumbed to (read "ignored") last ditched poaches from their
related other team, while still defending a poach from another team in the
competition in the same round!! This will undoubtedly force the league
rules committee to have a look at these sort of possible interest
conflicts. That very related team was also met in the final minor round,
and their win of nearly 100 points over the Pilgrims lowest scoring feat for the
year ensured that team grabbed the remaining rung on the ladder for a finals
berth.
Garryowen
Reds: (F) Riccuito; McLeod;
J.Brown; Camporeale; (M) Heffernan-c; Riewoldt; Kirk; Ratten; H.Black-vc; (B)
Scotland; Harley; N.Lonie; Tallis; (R) Bartel
This was one of two teams operated by the same
coaching staff who were content with letting their team sort itself out on match
day every round. The team suffered from a lot of poaching action and
caretaker coaching staff came in to improve the running of the team and recruit
some more players. Later in the season the Reds did some poaching of their
own and brought some big names to the club and with the interactive coaching
staff on board, the club made a late run for a finals spot. Unfortunately,
the team fell just short of the mark suggesting that frequent team selection and
attempts at recruiting may well have gotten the team into the top 8. While their
list was ever changing and players like McLeod and Green came to the club late
in the season due to poaches, some early games were lost due to the likes of Coleman
medallist A.Lynch (before being walking out on the club due to striking action)
being left out at team selection!
Scarborough
Sparks: (F) Burton; Akermanis;
Tredrea; N.Holland; (M) Haselby-vc; McVeigh; Campbell; Wulf; (B) A.Hunter;
Betheras; Bickley-c; Biglands; (R) Livingston; Beasy
The exploits of the Sparks in season 2002 are best
summed up by courageous and never say die attitude in the face of one of the
most adverse starts in IFFL history. The club had ZERO wins after six
rounds and languishing at the bottom of the table.... yet through sheer
persistence, changing the team around and some calculated (or lucky!)
recruitment the team went on to make the Grand Final after finishing sixth at
the conclusion of the home and away and drawing a bow against the more favoured
Leopards in the first week of the finals. Even more daunting was the need
to play the Dolphins (one of the strongest line ups in IFFL) in the Preliminary
Final, yet they overcame that obstacle and still made the Grand Final.
While the Sparks could not overhaul the minor Premiers in that fateful game,
they did hold them down to three quarter time suggesting that they could hold on
and win the Premiership before the Panthers let loose and overran them in the
final term. The Sparks picked up wins in some matches they weren't
expected to throughout the season to ensure they booked a finals berth.
All after a nil-6 start to the season. History equalling effort, and
sentimental favourites for most clubs at the end of the year.
SPARKS
Club Award Night - President's
Speech: Well the
time has come to reflect on what has been an eventful first year in the IFFL. I
am the first to admit that the club did take some time to adjust to the high
demands of the league and it would have been easy to totally adjust our playing
list considering the highly publicised start of 0:6! But knowing the quality of
the personnel we had on board we persevered with our core playing list and
well… the rest is history.
Coach's Speech: The
coaching staff are extremely pleased with the steady rate that the boys have
improved over the length of the season, the pressure was on from the first game
and after six games there was nowhere to hide, but the boys stuck to the game
plan and we were convinced that a win was only a matter of days away as we were
dreadfully unlucky not to win two of the first three. As the season wore on and
the chance to taste some finals action grew the guys really lifted their tempo
displaying some real classy performances against the more fancied and
experienced outfits. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all
associated for the challenge that this club has presented me with. Also would
like to point out the importance of one Craig Bradley. Who played most of this
year off the bench, and when the need arrived always put his hand up slotting
through some much needed goals. Now
for what everyone is here for - the awards!
Best & Fairest - WINNER:
Warren Tredrea : 27 votes - What
a great year this guy has had. The leader in the forward line and along with
being the leading goal kicker for the club would give half that away again to
his teammates.
2nd:
Brett Burton : 24 votes -
3rd: Jason Akermanis : 21 votes
Coaches
Award - WINNER: Craig Bradley - was
used sparingly. But was very damaging on the odd occasion when used, A dream to
coach.
Most
Improved - Paul Hasleby - started
the season slowly but has become a constant goal kicking forward.
Rising
Star - Rhett Biglands
- came to the club mid year with
only a couple of games under his belt and has turned into a real promising ruck
forward.
Donkey
Award - Paul Williams
- while he was a good performer for the Sparks he left the colour of
money. Who’s he playing next week! A special mention must go to Brad Ottens,
While he never played for the Sparks we did offer a large amount of cash for his
services, which luckily he turned down.
* And
that wraps up an entertaining evening. All the players and partners had a great
night but were sent home early with the big game (Grand Final) in mind, rumour
has it that the coach was spotted afterwards enjoying himself with a few local
fillies, cant confirm or deny at this stage.
Gold
Coast Stingers: (F) Tarrant;
Ottens; Lade; Chick; N.Thompson; (M) N.Stevens-vc; Francou-c; Couhglan; R.Hall;
A.Thompson; (B) Ward, A.Cox; (R) Doering; S.Doyle
A very up and down season was had by the Stingers
who were finding it difficult to make a real impression on the league early in
the piece but like many other clubs similar to their own, were able to turn some
of their season around with some unexpected victories and plenty of active
bidding on the market for new players. There was a helluva lot of
inconsistency in their ranks which explained many of the losses and some of the
unexpected wins; with forwards Thompson, Ottens and Tarrant either kicking
firing or not and all having fairly meagre seasons by their own lofty
standards. Some of the midfielders piked up for two or three here and
there but since only a couple of them kicked more than 6 for the season (the
basic benchmark between a back and midfielder classification in IFFL) it
highlighted the fact they were more off than on. The Stingers actually had
a spot in the top 8 with two minor rounds to go but had to face the top two
teams in those rounds which they had little hope of winning, and thus did not
have enough wins on the board to keep them there. In fact the Stingers
were pretty stiff with the draw, facing the top four sides as they finished the
home and away season in the last five rounds of the year, meaning also they had
to play them all twice!
STINGERS Club Award Night - Coach
comments: The season's over, I'm still proud of the boys even though the
second half was disgraceful they still showed a lot of heart and character. Well
with this season at an end I'm already looking forward to the pre-season
training and recruiting for next years team. The Stingers will be a force next
year where I'm sure they will be hungry for some August action. The Stingers
hosted their own night of nights, and the awards went to:
Best & Fairest
1) Daniel Chick- his aggression, skill and 26 season goals made this
decision as easy as they come to name Chick club champion.
2) Nick Stevens- Nick's hard running and goal kicking power made him a superstar
this year.
3) Chris Tarrant- Although he had some injury problems he still managed to be
the club's leading goalkicker, and if he had played a full year I'm sure he
would have finished #1 in the cubs best & fairest.
Most improved - Adrian Cox - For a backman to kick over 10 goals
was a great effort and I'm sure he will be promoted to midfield next season.
Rising Star - Stephen Doyle - Although he had a trouble year with
injury, this guy has shown potential to make him a huge star in the future, this
kid can kick goals!
Lemon of the year - Brad Ottens- His second half of the season was
so disappointing the guy couldn't even take a grab or kick a goal (unless he was
outside his range). For his wage, it wasn't worth it.
* And thats all, it was a wonderful
awards night, we all got drunk and slept with other team-mates wives :)
Western
Thunder: (F) N.Brown;
M.Stevens; L.Davis; Mooney; Pickett; C.Grant; (M) L.Harding; Lekkas; Primus;
Guerra-c; Barnard; Didak; J.Johnson; R.James; Ladhams; (B) Vandenburg; S.Cox; (R)
Rodan; S.Stevens
If it weren't for the Panthers and Dolphins,
we would be singing the praises of this team I am sure, in fact they were the
only two teams that held any real vice over the Thunder, who would otherwise
suffered only two losses for the season to the Stingers and Pilgrims, since they
outscored every other team nearly every round anyway. The Thunder had a
very serviceable forward line in spite of no real standout spearheads with one
or two of them constantly kicking the threes or fours that makes such a
difference to the scoreboard in terms of pressure and the like. They
boasted one of the most goal hungry midfields in the league and although Harding
and Lekkas were latecomers to the team through poaching action they still
managed to have some impact on the scorecard, the former kicking six goals on
one occasion. Nathan Brown was a real pain in the backside late in the
season for opponents, finishing the minor round with a career best 34 goals he
hadn't finished, and during the IFFL major round went on to kick enough goals to
almost double that tally. The Thunder may rue the win over the Dolphins in
the first qualifying final. Even though it catapulted them to the
Preliminary Final with a date with the Panthers... the Thunder would have won
the premiership if the Dolphins made one selection change in that first final
and won it.... Only the Panthers in the Preliminary final kicked a higher score
in any week of the finals, the team they eventually had to meet to end their
season. A different story if they met in the Grand Final - but third was
nothing to sneeze at and the team would be pleased with their efforts for the
season in any case.
