TEAM LIST HIGHLIGHTS
A very short insight into some of the more dominating factors from each team in terms of personnel that remained in their line up throughout the year and were major contributors in the respective classifications as far as goalkicking was concerned. These players were the main contributors and are grouped together in (F)orwards, (M)idfielders, (B)acks and (R)ookies. -c and -vc denote the nominated and preferred captain and vice captain as at season's end.
It is pertinent to point out that the comments and statistics provided count only until the completion of the minor round (Round 18) which best reflects the performances of the teams throughout the year. IFFL BFL (Black Forest League) effectively took over from the mantle of being IFFL#1 in previous seasons and in the main was made up of participating club managers who had been in IFFL before.
Southern
Bandits: (F) A.Rocca;
P.Medhurst; D.Neitz; Milne; B.Harvey; (M) Ling-c; T.Gasper-vc; Coughlan; (B)
D.Gaspar; (R) Salopek

It was not a spectacular year for the Bandits, who promised a lot quite early in
the piece but lost their way a bit as the season went on. Right up until
Round 16 they had a chance of making it into the finals, but a late season
massive poach on Milne saw their finances spiral downwards to see them just
financially viable at the end. One of the season highlights though was
Medhurst when he kicked 7 goals from different contortionist angles although
having Neitz in the side was a bonus with his fifty goals going a long way to
keeping the season alive for the Bandits right until the very end of the minor
round. An off-field hiccup/tragedy unfortunately saw the lack of
competitive spirit in the Bandits although every effort was made to remain in
the fight until closure.
Season Verdict: Fair
Bournda
Braves: (F) N.Thompson, Hammil,

The Braves just had one of those seasons where nothing seemed to go right.
On their most competitive occasions they usually lost by a couple of points and
even their highest score for the year resulted in a loss. On their
worst... well they were hammered. The staff resorted to proactive poaching
techniques that netted few new recruits and ultimately assigned the team to a
forgettable season. Jarrod Waite picked up was one of the few highlights
of an unlucky season.
Season Verdict: Poor - and very unlucky
Northern
Brumbies: (F) Lloyd,
Burns, Perrie, Dew, McRae; (M) Ramanauskas-c; Johncock; Powell, Kirk, Simmonds; (B)

For a team to boast only one player in the whole side to kick more than 25 goals
(Lloyd) after the minor round, they certainly got the best out of their outfit
from week to week, and finished runners up in both the minor and major round
contest. The Brumbies had a great year that had a fair amount of luck
(they should have passed some onto the Braves) highlighted by the fact that no
team had beaten them by more than 3 goals until the last minor round. They were
ladder leaders at one stage, vyeing for both minor and major premiers in the
last round of the respective season sections. Coached well, shrewd
recruiting, not bad for a coach coming from a traditional Rugby state.
Season Verdict: Sensational - almost perfect
Bakewell
Cyclones: (F) S.Rocca;
O'Loughlin, Voss, Bell; (M) J.Bolton-c, Eagleton, Beaumont, Vandenburg; (B)
Peckett-vc, Licuria, Stenglein;
Average points per match - 78: Highest Score
- 21.12.138: Biggest Win - 53 pts: Worst Loss - 90 pts: Lowest Score - 3.4.22
Night Games used - 1; Interchanges used - 4
A fairly disappointing season is probably a fair assessment of the competitive
outfit hired by the Cyclones. The team struggled at crucial stages of the
year in spite of pulling out some impressive performances at other times, and at
one stage looked like the impossible notion of booking a berth in the finals
might actually succeed. In the end they fell short of the mark and
probably needed a bit more boost in the forward line. The Cyclones would
not be too unhappy with their teams performance, just the final ranking at
season's end.
Season Verdict: Disappointing, but competitive
Darwin
Dolphins: (F) Fevola,
Kingsley, Pickett, Bradshaw, Welsh, Cupido, C.Jones; (M) Ladham-c; McManus-vc,

CONGRATULATIONS - IFFL PREMIERS!
There's really not much to recount for a team which emerged at the end of the
season as the ultimate winners, but for the Dolphins no doubt it has taken a
while to get there, and probably from their point of view very deserved.
Three seasons of dynamic performances to obtain nothing finally culminated into
a season of indifferent performances where they finished just percentage clear
of 8th spot and finally got things happening in the business end of the
season. They had probably the best forward line in the caper, their
highest score was a weekend when Bradshaw and Fevola kicked 14 goals between
them, which is just as well because there was not a lot of depth outside that
forward fifty! Shrewd selection and recruiting also helped their cause,
and the team at the end of the year came out the victors - well done.
Season Verdict: FANTASTIC - Congratulations on winning the premiership!
Dixon
Dragons: (F) Hall, Richardson,
M.Stevens, B.Green, P.Burgoyne; (M) Stafford-c; O'Keefe, B.Rawlings, J.Davies,
R.James; (B) J.Rawlings-vc, Torney, C.McGrath, Beasy; (R) A.Murray, Staker,
J.Schulz
Average points per match - 104: Highest Score
- 23.24.162: Biggest Win - 103 pts: Worst Loss - 84 pts: Lowest Score - 9.11.65
Night Games used - 2; Interchanges used - 1
When all is said and done, the best way to sum up the season for the Dragons is
probably to note that statistically it was very close to the overall performance
of the ultimate winner, but in the end could not string the wins when it needed
it most. The Dragons started off the season in a blaze of glory and had
other teams placing houses on the betting table that the Dragons would go all
the way. But as so often happens in IFFL, the most high performing teams
either soon freefall or just can't do it for all 22 rounds of IFFL footy.
The forward line boasted two greats, but they failed to capitalise as a dynamic
goalkicking duo, finding themselves more up the field than in the attacking
50. The two Rawlings brothers finally got their wish to play in the same
team and Jade was arguably the best backman find for the season. The
Dragons won a couple of late games to keep their top four spot secure, but after
leading the ladder early gradually declined. In the wash up it was still a
very good season.
Season Verdict: Very Good - even though lucky at times
Fulham
Falcons:
(F) Carey, N.Brown, Tredrea, C.Cornes; Longmuir; (M)
T.Johnstone-c; D.Motlop-vc, Doyle, J.White, Primus; (B) D.Fletcher, Wodjinski; (R)
D.Johnson, T.Richards, Schneider, McDougall, Winderlich
Average points per match - 107: Highest Score
- 25.20.170: Biggest Win - 122 pts: Worst Loss - 53 pts: Lowest Score - 9.4.58
Night Games used - 1; Interchanges used - 5
There was a sense of ruthlessness and competitiveness with the Falcons line up,
who it is fair to say (without meaning offense), used every legal trick in the
IFFL handbook to get the absolute most out of the season. Drafting
talented rookies and reactive, sometimes offensive, poaching is the indelibly
etched legacy the Falcons of 2003 are likely to leave. Their forward line
was extremely potent on its day and at one point in the season it seemed they
were all taking turns kicking bags to ensure the Falcons were almost invincible.
In spite of a lacklustre start to the season the Falcons surged through and near
the end of the minor round were almost unbackable favourites for the flag.
But the form of some players in front of sticks finally went against them and
the season slipped by. In spite of this, the team should be happy with its
overall performance through the year and were perhaps unlucky not to make a top
four finish. But that was as much a fault at the selection table with at
least three losses arguably certain wins. The Falcons boasted probably the
best line of rookie talent in the league.
Season Verdict: Good - highly competitive
Golden
Grove
Goannas: (F) Ph.Matera;
D.King; Dixon, Goodes; (M) Woewodin-c; N.Stevens, X.Clarke; (B) M.Bolton,
S.Mitchell; (R) B.Goddard; Schammer
Average points per match - 80: Highest Score
- 17.17.119: Biggest Win - 61 pts: Worst Loss - 122 pts: Lowest Score - 4.10.34
Night Games used - 1; Interchanges used - 5
The Goannas had earned a reputation of being one of the grittiest teams going
around on the basis of their past seasons, most notably a couple of grand final
appearances and a stint in every finals campaign to date. But this year
things did not go their way, they struggled signing the stars that had in past
seasons perked up to be season performers and were just unable to get a
consistent and sustainable season quest going. Their best efforts came at the
beginning of the season highlighted by a ten goal win in Round 1, a feat they
were never able to repeat again during the season, and their highest score of
just 17.17.119 which was something the team of past seasons would not be proud
of. Even that came early in the season against the Falcons and what
probably typified their overall progress throughout the year was that when the
two sides met again the winning margin of the Falcons itself was higher than the
Goanna's highest score! One thing that did occur which has been a bit of a
Goanna trait was the striking of big name players late in the season, the need
to juggle their line up in the last round to cover finances cost them a win and
a final resting place of 9th which was probably more indicative than their
eventual 11th.
Season Verdict: Disappointing - one of the main IFFL heavyweights of years past
had a forgetful season.
Chicago
Lions:
(F) B.Johnson, Garlick, Lucas, Akermanis; (M)
Petrie-c; Chapman-vc; S.Hart; Bizzell; (B) Hahn, Hargrave, Walsh
Average points per match - 81: Highest Score
- 19.10.124: Biggest Win - 67 pts: Worst Loss - 66 pts: Lowest Score - 4.9.33
Night Games used - 2; Interchanges used - 5
After experiencing the competition for the past few years there was an air of
expectation in the Lions camp that this year things would be on the
improve. The initial bidding started reasonably well and a couple of
players, including Scott Lucas, found themselves again in a Lions guernsey since
the team entered the comp a few years previous. But this year turned out
arguably their most disappointing with a number of players not providing the
anticipated goalkicking return and the changing roles of others in the dynamics
of the game not allowing too much scope for the side to settle. Their
leading goalkicker was a small forward who doubled the efforts of any other
forward in the team and only one other midfielder managed more than 20
goals. In spite of this the Lions had a fairly reasonable draw that
allowed them to book a berth in the finals. Their stay lasted only the one
week against a fairly souped up Falcon outfit. Perhaps the biggest error
of the season was a classic statement made by the Lions coaching staff about a
rival side who had managed mediocre scores to the point these two sides played,
labelling them as possibly the worst side he had seen. In true Fantasy
Footy ironic folklore, this message must have somehow got back to the opposition
players as the tables were completely turned with the Lions getting their lowest
score and suffering their worst loss for the season that very match. As the old
cliche goes, there is always next year and the Lions will no doubt be on the
prowl again.
Season Verdict: Fair, as with any team which makes the finals, but probably one
of the more disappointing
Maddington
Marauders:
(F) Farmer, J.Ball, J.Brown, R.Houlihan; (M)
Pavlich-c; Haynes-vc, K.Johnson; (B) D.Haines, Braun, Harris; (R) Staker
Average points per match - 68: Highest Score
- 18.20.128: Biggest Win - 50 pts: Worst Loss - 103 pts: Lowest Score - 4.6.30
Night Games used - 0; Interchanges used - 0
The Maddington Marauders were the new team that replaced its former identity as
the Groovy West Greyhounds, and were thus the reigning premiers heading into
this season. If luck was with them throughout the previous season then
2003 would prove to be the absolute opposite, that perhaps started with the
decision to remain the team and relocate it to new clubrooms and ground.
The rot started with the bidding, in one initial round the team signed only one
or two players, and from there it seemed things were never recovered. The
team also took on a proactive poaching focus rather than simply going for
recruits, and thus wasted motions, which turned out to be more costly as teams
started returning the favour. In my view this is one of the biggest
mistakes a lower placed side can make, they are better off using motions to
recruit players than upsetting others! For much of the season the
Marauders were languishing at the foot of the ladder and looked to be the first
IFFL team in the modern internet era to have the most horrible of hangovers in
nabbing a wooden spoon to follow up a premiership. Thankfully that did not
occur but the team was pretty much the easybeats throughout the year. The
Marauders accumulated less points for the season than anyone else and averaged
just 11 goals per game, which was never going to win them much, although in
reality they were kicking a lot less most of the time. Perhaps there was
some complacency in following up the fantastic 2002 premiership but something
just did not click for the Marauders this season and the side which was
initially recruited was clearly one of the worst out of all the teams, which
turned fairly true when no player in the side kicked 30 goals and their leading
goalkicker was a midfielder. Their season finished on a high note that
allowed them one of their highest scores for the year and the assurance of not
finishing in the cellar, which ironically (since the computer decides the draw
randomly) happened to be against the side it beat in the 2002 grand final, and
quite unbelievably they ended the season with an unbeaten record against the
Goannas, accounting for half of their wins!
Season Verdict: Disastrous! After winning the previous year's premiership,
nothing could go right (especially luck!) in 2003
Youngtown
Racquets: (F) Riewoldt, Bruce,
Molloy, Chick; (M) R.Jones-c; J.Carr-vc, Hille, T.Cook, B.Holland; (B) O'Bree,
Harrison; (R) Ball, Gardiner, Playfair
Average points per match - 94: Highest Score
- 27.21.183: Biggest Win - 93 pts: Worst Loss - 100 pts: Lowest Score - 4.12.36
Night Games used - 0; Interchanges used - 5
Over the past few years the Racquets have built up a bit of a reputation for
being a bit of a Jekyll and Hide outfit, and season 2003 prove to be no
different, in fact perhaps a punctuation of this statement. This is really
one of those uncanny little Fantasy Footy things that seems to occur in spite of
every other rule (different teams from year to year for one) saying it shouldn't
happen. The season started off pretty poorly for the Racquets and were
even labelled one of the worst performing outfits seen by a rival coach, but
when this was leaked to the players it seems a complete transformation occurred
and the team went completely beserk to produce their best effort at that point
in the season. To continue with the Jekyll/Hide epitome there were a few
things which probably just underline this completely. They were not able
to make the finals because of a series of poor performances and not enough wins
on the board, yet clearly had the best points accumulation of the teams which
finished in the bottom half (and many in the top 8 would argue for other reasons
that they were thankful this team never did actually get a finals berth in spite
of a late season run) whilst conceding the third highest amount of points to
opponents. But if one thing was to really punctuate their up and down
season it must be with their lowest and highest scores for the season, not just
the fact that they represented the extremes for the whole league but they were
also obtained against the same side, who eventually were Premiers!
Season Verdict: Disappointing - the Jekyll & Hide nature would have been
pretty nasty for other teams if they made the finals.
Fitzroy
Rovers: (F) S.Burgoyne,
Harding, Didak, Lekkas, Riccuito, Haselby; (M) M.Carr-c; M.Pike-vc; McMahon,
Betheras; (B) M.Johnson; Tallis; (R) Fleming, Sandilands
Average points per match - 100: Highest Score
- 22.11.143: Biggest Win - 79 pts: Worst Loss - 70 pts: Lowest Score - 7.11.53
Night Games used - 1; Interchanges used - 5
The Rovers of 2003 were much like the Greyhounds of 2002, with their ability to
nail down top spot early to midway through the season and hold it seemingly at
arms length to their nearest rivals for much of the season. However, the
crucial finish to the minor round was like the pressure of a team being overrun
in a grand final and eventually the relinquishment of that top spot and a fall
to third entering the finals race might have spelt out why the Rovers were
unable to repeat the effort of the aforementioned Greyhounds. The Rovers
proved to be nothing overly special but each week they were just able to kick
the score that would get them over the line, in most cases around their average
of 15 goals, and the more times you kick this sort of score, the more games you
are going to win. Add to this the fact that they had a complement of
forwards who between them kicked over 100 goals for the season and again you had
the right ingredients for a winning recipe. There really wasn't a lot in
the end that the Rovers did wrong, they just happened to be outclassed by better
teams who were able to dish out their own bit of pressure and run down the sabre
tooths. They were a team who also felt the Jekyll and Hide nature of the
Racquets for the year, their biggest win and their worst loss happened against
the Racquets. Some heavy poaching action against the Rovers effectively
cut off their own means to recruit more talented players, being somewhat
crippled at the bargaining table, but the side would be better for what was
other than the finals series, a successful campaign.
Season Verdict: Good - in spite of falling from grace at the end, the team was
ultra competitive for the season, and lead from the front
Loganholme
Timberwolves: (F) Tarrant;
N.Davis, P.Williams, Krakouer, Ablett; (M) Kennelly-c; Sampi-vc, K.Cornes,
R.Lonie; (B) Cameron, Whelan; (R) Lokan
Average points per match - 92: Highest Score
- 22.8.140: Biggest Win - 59 pts: Worst Loss - 44 pts: Lowest Score - 5.7.37
Night Games used - 1; Interchanges used - 2
Over the past couple of years the Timberwolves forged a reputation for being an
underrated, if slightly performing better than they looked on paper side, the
type of team you could not afford to let your guard down against as they ready
to pounce. A change of home grounds this year meant a change of identity
although their mascot remained the same. Off the cuff I would probably
rate the performance of the Timberwolves for season 2003 as about middle of the
road, and ironically they finished 7 out of 14 teams after the minor round as if
to underline that theory. To emphasise the point more they had trouble
securing wins against the teams immediately around them but had unbeaten records
against one of the lowest placed teams (Marauders) who were reigning premiers as
well as the eventual minor premiers this season. Their main Achilles heel
was that they were perhaps top heavy, with only a few players contributing
significant scorelines to the team's total and many others doing very little or
only providing the odd cameo, although their vice captain Sampi was a tremendous
find and was second in the leading goalkicking stakes to only that of Tarrant,
one of the big improvers of season 2003, even though he was unable to crack
50. A few more points might have been added to the team's eventual running
total if Sampi was instated as captain, rather than filling the vice role, but
team dynamics and probably discipline reason saw Kennelly as the club's leader
kicking more than 20 goals less forth season. Dare I say it, but one must
consider that the Timberwolves had a serviceable and typical season and will no
doubt be looking to improve next year.
Season Verdict: Fair - again not the finish the team would have hoped for but at
least they made the finals
Western
Warriors: (F) A.Lynch, Gehrig,
Robertson, Embley, Croad, Morrell, Cousins; (M) Koschitzke-vc; Edwards, Hayes,
J.Johnson; (B) P.Bowden-c, Jackovich; (R) Rutten
Average points per match - 110: Highest Score
- 29.13.187: Biggest Win - 114 pts: Worst Loss - 36 pts: Lowest Score - 9.6.60
Night Games used - 2; Interchanges used - 0
There is really very little criticism you can hand out to a team which not only
finished minor premiers but outscored all other teams for the year, and had by
far the most effective defence - other than of course to point out they didn't
go on with it in the finals series and turn the minor cup into a major
conquest. The Warriors really were one of the main sides to beat all year
and notched up the highest score for the season and one of the biggest wins, not
surprisingly against the eventual wooden spooners. The Warriors were
probably the classic example of an Essendon team circa 2001, hard to beat,
performed well when they needed to and rarely lost even a slight skip of a
heartbeat against less fancied opponents which often is the undoing of top sides
on at least one occasion in these fantasy footy comps. Their forward line
fired and for most of the season every one of their six forwards had notched up
double figures which is a sign of a well balanced side and one that is
traditionally hard to topple. This was also even more amazing considering
the side never used an Interchange motion for the year and to my knowledge this
never cost them a match, although the one draw from memory may have been
different. No side was able to beat them by more than six goals, and if
memory serves correct I think this was a one off with most other losses within 2
goals, so it was a pretty good season for a newcomer to IFFL, and they will
certainly be back to go the extra step in 2004.
Season Verdict: Excellent - minor premiership and simply the comments stated
above, pity they didn't go all the way.
