SEASON/TEAM REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

The inaugural CSAFL season will be long remembered as probably the greatest and most memorable league competition.  It was filled with uncertainty, unpredicability and the most suprising moments.   The season was broken up by the 15 AFL team draw which meant byes for real life players affecting the line ups of the various CSAFL teams. The CSA Lions snuck into the five only in the last couple of rounds and ended up winning the premiership from 5th position when Schwarz kicked 9 in the final. The Port Adelaide Pirates coach who was flag favourite, was quoted in saying a few rounds before the finals that the team he would not want in the race was the CSA Lions.  The Pirates lost just one game from Round 12 onward before losing the Grand Final. What about the day when Dunstall kicked 10 in a losing side because Ablett kicked 14?  The Terrorists who finished last were about as unlucky a team as one could get, Dunstall kicking 6, 9, 10 (twice) and 11 goal bags in losing sides!  Troyz Boyz drafting such legends as T.Watson, T.Shaw, R.Jameson and M.Bayes into their initial squad - all of which were playing in the backlines!  The Raiders delisting B.Allison, M.Symons and A.Gleeson at mid season who between them had kicked just 6 goals, and then two weeks later in the wilderness had kicked another 30 goals and each kicking 20+ season goals. Modra's Maniacs were on the back foot right from the beginning of the season, not winning their first game until Round 8 - they even lost the first game when Modra kicked 13 - then losing just four more games only to miss out on a finals spot by a whisker.  Potentially, they would have won every Finals match Grand Final if they made it (assuming they replaced the Lions in the Elimination final).  The year of the big guns like Ablett, Dunstall, Lockett, Minton-Connell, Longmire, Sumich, Jackovich, Lynch, Lyon, Modra who were all bagging goals left right and centre throughout the year.  The Domster having Sumich and Longmire as their guns who kicked over 110 goals between them and the deadly tiger duo of Naish and Gale who kicked more than 60 between them.  The Dodgers who never seemed to have a full compliment of the guns they drafted, Lockett in and out due to injury and suspension and Minton-Connell ending up being the leading scorer.  Who would forget the Semi Final that all came down to one player (CSA Lions Ben Allan) to determine the outcome of the match.  In an era when one had to purchase the Herald-Sun to get the stats it was a sleepless weekend for both teams.  The Lions had the best draft selections of any team, picking up Brereton and Osborne as its last two picks - the former served out plenty of suspensions but the latter was in USA kicking deformed footies and returned to kick 30 in the AFL, while at Mid-Season Schwarz was picked up in the second round of picks as a 'risky pick up' who went on to win the Grand Final off his own boot.  Finally, the Lions guernsey, a Melbourne jumper with the Fitzroy Lion on it was designed at the beginning of the year.  Later in the year there was talk of a Melbourne/Fitzroy jumper and the Herald-Sun published a prospective jumper design - exactly the same as the CSA Lions!  

This was the inaugural fantasy footy competition I ran at my workplace that was an absolute scream for interaction and uncanny events.  It will long be remembered as the most outstanding League of all the competitions that have been overseen.
