SEASON/TEAM REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS
Teams shown in the position they finished at the end of the season
Black Angels:
There was no doubt from the outset that this team would win the flag. It
boasted the best top four combination of any team in the league with 262 goals
kicked by Lockett, Everritt, Lyon and Pearce the bane of every other club, no
other club even coming close - and that's with Pearce only being grabbed at
mid-season! Perhaps the most amazing moment of the draft was when they
selected Garry Lyon in the third draft round, somehow being overlooked by every
other club. When J.Hutton was secured as their third actual full forward
pick up, already the moans and groans were emanating from other seats at the
draft table. The Angels went on to become the most successful team in one
season ever, losing just one game for the entire year, and even then under
controversial circumstances!! At the time they clinched the Minor Premiers
award in the last minor round of the season they snatched up their highest GFL
score to date. Had've they played in one of the finals weeks when they had
a bye, they would have scored the highest ever score in any GFL style
competition even to the time of writing this (1999/2000) with 33 goals in a
trial match (Lockett kicking 16) and a record margin of 185 points! The
Angels were honoured with the mid-season pick up of the year, grabbing a
relatively unknown Brad Pearce who went on to kick 32 last-half of the season
goals. The Angels were undoubtedly the super side of the GFL competition
and with such heavyweights as those in its top four to six goalkickers, there is
plenty of room to risk other players down the order a bit.
Dixon Dragons:
You could be forgiven for saying that the GFL comp was made up of 11 teams and
then the Angels, but as the finals form showed, there were 10 teams then the
Angels and Dragons! Considering they went all the way to the Grand Final
without a player kicking more than 50 goals, and a makeshift forward cum ruckman
as their leading goalkicker, you have to ask how they did it. They weren't
even lucky! The Dragons hand-picked a team full of goalkicking talent,
while Modra was on paper their spearhead, he only finished the season with 42
goals third on the club's goalkicking list, whereas Ball finished as the leading
goalkicker for the club with 48! Every player in their list who played at
least 3 AFL games - save one - finished the season with double figure tally of
goals. The Dragons showed they were the king of trades, each mid season
trade falling into a 'positive' benefit (if that makes sense). They also grabbed
some interesting players, undoubtedly the stand out being Peter Mann, a middle
order mid season draft pick who went on to kick 27 goals for the Dragons!
The Dragons played the Angels on four occasions, losing each game and the
intense rivalry between these two teams commenced, the penultimate finish being
21 goals in a losing grand final, curiously without any goal contribution from
their leading goalkicker! While the Dragons had an average year on paper
in the minor round, it was the major round when they cut loose and scored around
100+ points on every occasion, launching the notion of their finals playing
capacity for future years.
Krusty's Klowns:
At the pre-season draft the coach was late, foregoing his first two choices
himself and allowing the rest of the convention to chose for him - in good
faith I might add - being S.Rocca and Cummings. The complaints came in
from the Klowns coach but as you will see in the forthcoming seasons, everyone
did him a favour!! But Savvaloid ended up kicking 92 goals for the year
and spearheaded a consistent and underrated Klowns outfit with Cummings and a
few others throwing in their support. While they snuck into the top six as
a result of the last round they ended up taking the opportunity in full and made
their way toward the Grand Final, including a win over the more fancied
Lingo's. Only the Dragons could stop them reaching that first day in
September. The Klowns were let down by a couple of mid-season trade stuff
ups, allowing Gale to go to the Slammers for the 20-goal McIvor, which on paper
was good but we all knew that McIvor would end up in the backlines, and he
did. A very impressive season from a team which would later become a true
GFL Powerhouse.
Cunning Lingo's:
Noted as one of the super powers of the League by virtue of having Brownless and
Ablett as their top duo. The Lingo's were the only team that were able to
beat the Angels for the whole year - under controversial circumstances when a
losing team was chosen in good faith by proxy selection, only to have the coach
lodge a formal complaint and be allowed their default team - hence the win, many
days after the results were out! Their season in the League can be
summarised into minor success and major failure. Throughout the course of
the Minor round they kept themselves generally in the top three but were to bow
out of the Major round in successive Finals losses - three losses too I might
add (partly due to Ablett's injury). The team was undoubtedly reliant on
its two heavyweights and for the first few matches in the year set about trying
to get a rhythm together. From then on, the team carved up all before them,
finishing second leading into the major round. With the support of such
players in Heady, Winmar and Riccuito playing up forward a lot, the team proved
to be a formidable outfit during the year.
Longmire's Lechers:
Fiercely competitive on paper but more erratic than an eccentric
scientist! Without a Full Forward to speak of (Longmire disappointingly
contributed a meager 30 goals) the Lechers were generally always underdone and
only the rare acts of steroid induced bravery would get them a win in the
League, usually against more fancied opponents. They could also be
labelled as the pro-recycle dependent team picking up the likes of McLeod,
McIntosh and McKernan who were delisted by other GFL teams at mid-season draft
(unless he liked the Macca's!). Chris Johnson was the most consistent
player in the outfit bagging goals in just about every match until getting all
shy and going MIA in the finals. The rest of the team was made up of too
many players who could so easily kick goals in one week and disappear from the
scene the next, alluding to all the interesting scorelines that make up the
Lecher's season. This was not more shown by than the belting of the
Dragons in the last final round, only to be thrashed by them in return the
following first finals week! Fifth place, being around the middle of the
pack, probably was indicative of their efforts overall.
Standley Slammers:
Heading the Slammers list (after negotiations with Panthers in the pre-season
draft convention - "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine"
techniques) was the doomsday double in C.Grant and R.Osborne. Except, no
one told the Slammers that the Doomsday joke was against them - the duo barely
living up to expectation for most of the year. They also boasted the Tiger
Trio in Naish, Gale and Maxfield who were capable of being severely agonising
for opponents on their day. Unfortunately, when either of the two groups
fired, the other didn't, and neither fired on more occasions! If it wasn't
for the inconsistent but brave efforts of Osborne the team would have done worse
than it did for Grant who kicked 70 goals last year barely got half that this
time around. Gale and Naish consistently contributed 2 or 3 goals to the
scoreline but rarely much more. Peter Matera was the real bonus, resuming
his 1993 goalkicking form with 20 for the year. Finishing sixth was probably not
indicative of their efforts for the season, they were able to mix it with the
best and generally always maintain a competitive scoreline at the worst of
times. But with sides like the Lingo's, Angels and Dragons above them,
their season was always going to be tarnished. The blackest moment coming
when they succumbed to the Panthers second and final win late in the
season! This morale lowering feat was taken into the finals and the
Slammers were soon planning seriously their end of season trip.
Beanheads:
The fortunes of this side were about as extreme from either direction as you can
get, capable of kicking 20+ goals on its day and when it was a bad day, it
really was a bad day, kicking just three or four goals. Throw in the names
Dunstall, Daffy, C-Collins, Hird and Tranquilli and you would be putting hard
odds on these guys to easily make the finals. The pick up of the year for
the team was Daffy, selected as 122 pick in the pre-season draft who went on to
kick 37 goals! But form and injury reeked havoc within the Beanheads ranks
and it was rare that a full contingent of players could be selected to play
together. Early season form in the first six matches was oustanding, cementing a
regular spot in the top six and which also suggested a serious finals contender
was playing, but their last half ensured a disappointing end to the year.
Dunstall returned from injury a week or two before the finals and gave the
Beanheads some last hope in securing a spot but were pipped at the post.
The Beanheads also recorded the worst ever loss in the season, going down to the
Lingo's in a late season match by over 100 points. Potentially, the team
could have won all but the Grand Final during the major round, having the best
score out of most of the teams.
The Cockneys:
Before the season started the team was touted as finishing around 8th position,
and that's where the Cockneys ended up. But in spite of this the team
showed some real promise - signs which would allow it to earn a Grand Final
berth the following year and Premiers in '97 - and provided even the top placed
teams with some real headache inducing performances. The team was always
competitive and shared moments of glory with disappointing losses about as many
apiece, but the real killer was injuries. Alistair Lynch finding Chronic
Fatigue syndrome too much to get out of bed with, Roberts starting to show his
age and break down regularly and Tony Hall hardly sighted throughout the
year. Neitz, Mercuri and Loewe were the main contributors for the team
throughout the year and would go on to become sadistic thorns in other team's
quest for GFL glory. But it was the D.Jarmans, Roberts and G.McAdams who
really brought the team down a notch or two on the ladder, for their ill-form,
injury or regular appearances in defence marred what could have been a
surprisingly successful year.
Cunning Stunts:
Ninth place was probably justly deserved by the disappointing Stunts who through
inexperience in draft selection and Fantasy Footy playing were just unable to
crack it at all throughout the year. While Carey was a great forward to
have in the line up, he was the first choice ahead of other available players
like Kernahan, Rocca and Lyon which was probably the first error of many in
selection techniques by the team. The side was then drafted with players
who could play either end of the ground, such as Wellmen, Smart, & B.James
who could never really be relied upon to consistently kick goals, then running
players like Connell, A.Stevens, D.Brown and Camporeale much in the same vain,
and finally lumberjacks like Wynd and Madden which speak for themselves.
Lacking real goalkicking balance and a spearhead ensured the Stunts were never
really a threat to the rest of the competition, other than those rare days of
(Carey influenced) brilliance. The Stunts were largely undermanned in the
goalkicking department and found it hard to score over 10 goals, albeit the fact
they were far from the worst team in the competition!
The Cartel:
Initally labelled as the "Quiet achievers" it turned out that quiet
they were, achievers they were not. On seeing the summary of their
scorelines over the year one would note the occasions when the team lost but
better selection would have handed them a win and this was due to some coaching
absences throughout the year. On at least three of these occasions, simply
putting one non-selected player in the side would have handed them the
premiership points. The season was marred by a lacklustre effort from '94
50 goal achiever Craig O'Brien, the early season knee injury to Matty Richardson
and the eventual dud mid-season pick of Shaun Smith. The side really
lacked any consistent contributors and were only able to make a couple of decent
scores during the year, on one occasion, one of the season's highlights for all
concerned, drawing a match with the heavily more fancied Angels.
Tax Dodgers:
Arguably the worst team to be formed this year, the Dodgers were only saved by
the inadequate performances of the Plympton Panthers and thus did not finish
with the wooden spoon. About the best thing to come out of the Dodgers
camp this year was it's guernsey - aptly designed for the team name, featuring a
Dollar sign surrounded the distinctive Port Adelaide "Prison
Bars". The only other good thing for the Dodgers in season '95 was
the stranglehold on the Coach of the year prize only to be pipped in literally
the last round by that annoying Standley. To sum it up, the Dodgers were a
team of past statistics and current hacks. The likes of Salmon (now
playing in the ruck), Brereton (past his prime and rarely playing), Alessio
(another ruckman), Ballantyne (now playing full back) and plenty of other
examples. After being touted as the wooden spooners by everyone before the
season even got underway, they did provide a first round shock, belting the
Cartel to be the first team to claim top spot on the inaugural ladder. But then,
rarely sighting a win up until mid-season the team certainly made some ruthless
decisions and to their credit became much more competitive in the last half of
the season - but the damage was already done. In the end a late season
draw with the Panthers determined who finished as the cellar dwellers - given
that the winner would escape free and Dodgers needed only a draw to stay on
top.
Plympton Panthers:
Easily the most disappointing effort of any team for the year, even discounting
the fact that they finished the wooden spooners in the inaugural GFL
season. "Objectively", the team on paper had plenty of
potential, especially with the touted dominant looking duo by punters Kernahan
and J.Cook. But Kernahan was to go on and be injured for most of the year,
even though his real AFL team could lose only two matches for the season, and
J.Cook was just another youngster who was labelled with potential and nothing
else. It was a clear indication of why you don't draft teams based on
great factors the year before - since had've this team played in '94 there would
be no doubt it would be second or third in the competition. Some ruthless
delists and trades at mid-season draft certainly helped the team, but only when
affected players came back from injury. In the end this was to play the
most indicative role in the season of the Panthers and accounted for why they
could only manage two wins for the duration of the year.
what if there were mergers?

Season 1995 was touted as one of the worst in recent memory for long term
injuries, so much so that pundits were able to come up with the following more
than competitive line up from the list of long term injured (players who missed
at least half if not nearly all the season) - many of who were drafted to a GFL
team:
Backs: Peter Filandia, Barry Stoneham, Darren Crocker
Half Backs: Tony Free, Rohan Welsh, Ross Lyon
Centreline: Troy Clarke, Craig Lambert, Winston Abraham
Half Forwards: Darren Bewick, David Schwarz, Matthew Richardson

ROLL UP FOR TIPPING - ROUND 6
Undoubtedly, one of the highlights for the season was the guest tipping summary by Klowns coach, Cropley, who penned the following verses for Round 6 GFL - playing on team performances to date and using players within the respective line ups:
Slammers v Angels:
"I'll Grant Osborne's good
And may slam the door
But if Lockett ain't Lyon
The ANGELS will soar."
Lingo's v Cartel:
"The CARTEL has a chance
If young 'radar' tunes in
But in anyone's LINGO
G-O-D spells B-I-G W-I-N!"
Dodgers v Cockneys:
"No Stewie, No Alistair,
Not even Tony Hall
But the DODGERS kid no one
Watch the COCKNEYS have a ball!"
Lechers v Dragons:
"The depth of the LECHERS
Is instantly 'Plain'
If 'Horse' can kick twenty
The DRAGONS are slain."
Beanheads v Panthers:
"The BEANHEADS have many
Who goals are a 'kicking
Unless Sticks kicks a bag
They'll give PUSSIES a licking."
Klowns v Stunts:
"Roll up! It's a circus
With tumbles, thrills and tricks
But unless Carey works magic
These STUNTS will feel like p*****!"
