Report
Form over the summer should have had the Stickys firm favourites for this match as we stood with a two-zip win record over the Donnas but this meant little as the Donna line-up had changed a good bit since our last encounter several weeks back and they had played the preliminary Plate rounds without a hitch. Further the Arms didn't have the strike power of R.Hunter to call on, so more realistically it was a 50-50 bet. The game got underway with negotiations as to playing conditions as the Donnas wanted it reduced to 30 overs to allow some player to get away. We weren't keen on this and so it was resolved that the Donnas should bat last and arrange their order to suit their early leavers - which was fine as Jez would have batted had there been a toss.

Big Undies and the Judge hit the road running with a terrific pull to the boundary by Angus of the 5th ball of the day to announce the Stickys were in. Greg took a while to get the pace and his range but then settled in to make a serious stand. Six fours later saw the Duff to 40 and a rest with Craig seemlessly taking over and at drinks after 18 we were 94 without any loss with 200+ as the target. But cricket has a way of cutting you off at the knees quickly and it then went 1-95, 2-95, 3-98, 4-106, 5-112. Ouch! The Rock and Radar Man steadied however and took it to 140 before John, not for the first time, walked on his stumps and was on his way. Alex by now was in overdrive and with a blitz of boundaries raced to 40 and things were looking a lot better. It was to prove a key knock. In the last few overs Jez, JJ, and Pete went for everything with Undies and Alex in the wings and although they got back in time had run out - but not before Pete hit a magnificent straight drive off the final ball to land in Robertson Road to take it to 178 and a run rate target of a touch over 5.

The Donnas started as if they wanted to win by half-time and barely left a ball pass without having a whack. This resulted in two screamers to slips which were spilled but at 44 in only the 7th another went safely to Aaron at first off the Knife and we had the first break. Two balls later Matt struck again and it was 2-44. We got another before drinks and as we contemplated the Plate/Shield - an impressive and venerable glass framed much-badged objet d'art - reclining grandly in the space between the two teams, Undies reminded us that it was crunch time with the last session of the summer coming up. We needed 8 wickets and the Donnas needed about 4.5 off the remaining 19 overs. Further breaks came at 114 and 120 but then it was down to less than 50 and with top bat Matt Stephens to come back in, the Donnas were in the straight and heading for home. Good catches to Greg, JH and Jez, some top overs from Pete, Menga and JJ, and a run-out saw it come down to Stephens now back in with last man Chester Dimsdale, the Donnas skipper, with three overs to go and 13 to get. Holland to Stephens, Stephens cover drives to Alex, a mile away on the Robertson Road boundary and an easy two it looked, but a superb return came back flat and hard and straight to Rock's gloves and the ump's finger shot up. Along with his great dig, that throw from Alex turned the match as a couple of balls later the wily Jez was much too good for Chester with a lovely in-dipper taking out the leg stump. Six catches, a 3-for to Pete, 2-fors to the Knife and Dutchy, 1-fors to JJ and Meng, one hell of a throw from big A, committed scrambling ground work from Craig, Aaron, and James made even Duffy admit it wasn't a bad couple of sessions.

The match was subsequently re-played a couple of hundred times back at the Arms, trophy on counter, free beers in hand, and then all over again at a great BBQ at Coogee Beach courtesy of the Exec Chef and Radar Man.

Sticky Moment:

Lots of highs and lows today. None for 94 and then 5 for 112, vital scores from Angus, Undies and Alex, Pete's mighty last ball six, Goose's strip on getting a quacker to a tough lbw, JH walking on his wicket, again, JJ giving up his wicket in a dash for an impossible single, chances put down but then six taken, disciplined stuff from all theSticky bowlers, Donna Dave Zeilkhe's sportsmanship on walking, Duffy's pained anguish with hard drives re-bounding off thumbs and elbows when boundaries were death, skipper Jez's composure under pressure, Alex's throw, the Knife's sausages and great sauce, Alex's beer. Even detectable signs of passing interest in the result from the ladies. A top day.
