Maverick's take: Round two brought with it the CACC's first encounter with the comp's comebacks, the Boozers. Their track record included a premiership two years ago, subsequently getting kicked out of the comp for off field antics, then returning to knock off last years grand finalists, the Troopers in round one. Dave Candyman King lost the toss and the Boozers sent the Mighty Arms into bat. The chassis of the beast was formed in a 41 run opening partnership between a run hungry Blood Duffy and a more restrained Proud Mary Wheeler, seeing the shine off the ball admirably before Duffy edged one through to the 'keeper in the tenth over 24. Wheeler lifted his tempo only to hole out on the deep square boundary, robbed of a half century by 42 runs. Enter Maverick Burton, ever the strategist, who saw a few deliveries before deciding that these bowlers would be cannon fodder for the likesof Lang and Cooper, and gave his wicket away by allowing himself to be struck on the pad by a right arm around the wicket delivery to be given out LBW for 0. It proved to be the masterstroke that brought to the crease the decisive partnership of the match, the afore mentioned Lang and Cooper. Although scratchy early in his comeback innings, the Honourable Lang Presiding was his kind hearted charitable self, offering the hapless fielders no less than four catching opportunities on his way to 50 runs. Supported ably by The Old Bill Cooper, the swashbuckling duo took the score from 3/51 to 138 before Coop holed out to point for 47 runs. Candyman King's fancy new blade added up to $160 per run, a true entrepreneur's endeavour, and popped one up to the mid on fielder for 2. PJ Harvey chanced his arm, and cracked a thunderbolt to short cover. When the doubled over Boozer came to and the ball was discovered lodged inside his ribcage, the CACC's number one cap holder was dismissed for 4. The welcome return of Tommy O'Sullivan brought with it a flurry of late runs, and combined with a 'fours-or-nothing' Admiral Thurling to take the innings away from the Troopers control. The big 'O became bored with the fodder being offered to him and allowed himself to be clean bowled for 19. The Admiral powered on, joined breifly at the crease by Woody, and then CACC debutant Simon Angell. With the prospect of having to hear the Admiral brag of his mighty innings for the rest of the season becoming a real possibility, Angell took the most humane option available and ran out the Admiral for 30, to leave the CACC innings at a total of 225. A defendable total.

The following Saturday's plans ran awry with the mysterious absence of Mr Angell who was knocked off his scooter the night before. The mighty Rock Harvey was on hand to fill the gap in the field, and the CACC took to the ground with a full eleven. The first over of the day from the Admiral went for 10 runs and the foundation of the day's play looked shaky. On the sidelines, the Boozers opened a case of beer while kicking around a footy, signalling the deathof any cricketing aspirations they had for the day. The Candyman tossed the ball to Woody to open from the other end in Simon's absence, and he broke through with his third ball, clean bowling the opener with the score on 10. In his third over, Woody drew and outside edge from the bat to deliver the CACC one of the finest second slip grabs in it's history from the cool and collected Tommy 'O. The Admiral, still fuming over his first over, unleashed a torrent of hostile open bowling, and from his next seven overs, conceded only 8 more runs for 3 wickets. Woody backed up his first over with another two wickets and when the open bowlers were rested, the Boozers were reeling at 6/29. Lang and Cooper combined again to take 2 and 1 wicket respectively, until the innings was closed by Candyman King's wily leggies. The Boozers all out 82 from 22 overs. The CACC engine was revving. The Candyman is known to always back himself despite any real credentials, and CACCer's know this confidence extends to his belief in his charges. It came as no surprise that he put the Boozers back in to bat for a chance at an outright.

The Admiral and Woody continued their outstanding bowling into the Boozers second dig, taking the first three wickets and conceding only 23 runs from eight overs. Having done most of the bowling, the Candyman again backed his own bowling, and from the other end brought on the shifty line and length of Blood Duffy. The accumulative 235 years of cricket experience between the old warriors showed as they demolished the Boozers taking 3 each with a mix of line, length, and turn. The second innings closed on 109 to give the CACC an outright victory.

Round 3: Oct 8 and 15 v East Sydney at MP10

Maverick's take: With the sweet smell of round two's outright victory over the Boozers still in the noses of the Cricketers Arms, they rested weary cricketing bones the following Saturday, before taking the battle field against the formidable East Sydney the next week. Some pondered their game, others sought quality time with loved ones. Hindsight would have had Arms player's time better spent writing a last will and testament for any round three aspirations of success - the story to be told here is a dark page in the mighty history of the CACC, and sensitive readers may choose not to read on, as this match report contains scenes of ineptitude, lack of discipline and sheer bad luck:

Success does strange things to a cricket club. Some will galvanise their game and refuse to change a winning formula while some have trouble reclaiming glory times in a post winning depression. The Cricketers Armsclaim an outright victory and in their next game figure they don't even have to show up to win another. Before the start of play, only half of the CACC's chosen squad had arrived to take on the East Sydney powerhouse, down from 2nd grade against their wishes and having a point to prove. Luck would have it that the toss was won and the Arms could hide their tardiness behind choosing to bat, the catch being that most of the line up had yet to grace Moore Park with an appearance. As the dribs and drabs of the lineup arriving towards the start of play, Mits Neale went in to open the batting with noble stand-in partner, Rock Harvey. The impromptu change to the batting lineup proved unsuccessful as the Rock was back in the sheds with the score on 6, clean bowled for 5 after showing glimpses of class playing solidly off his trusty back foot. Solid open bowling from the Easts saw Mits and first drop Choice Bro Greive work hard to get the score to 23, before calamity set in and the Arms lost the plot. The ensuing batting collapse will one day have scholars comparing it to the fall of Rome, not in scale, but in sheer lack of commitment to keep a grand history alive and thriving. Mits fell to the demolition workers of the Easts bowling lineup for 6, then Grieve for 9, PJ Harvey for 0, Maverick Burton for 4, and Candyman King for 0. Fall of wicket: 23, 23, 24, 29 and 30. Hope for the innings came in the form of the recent middle order performances of Honey Cooper and the determination of Proud Mary Wheeler.  The duo produced the best partnership of the innings, but Cooper holed out against the bowling of Lyons and was caught on 15. Wheeler fell to same mental implosion of the rest of the batting lineup and was bowled four runs later for 11. The score, 7/53. The Arms tail order turned in scores that were to be the envy of the top order, Admiral Thurling out for 2, Funky JJ Joseph 4 and Woody finished the only player to not give away his wicket on 7 not out. Arms all out 67. Scholars agree, the fall of Rome pales in insignificance.

East Sydney's good work gave them the opportunity to bat through to the end of the first day. The same solid cricket that saw to embarrassing the Arms batting, was at work now against the bowlers, with 75 runs coming from ten overs for the loss of only two wickets. First change bowlers Mits Neale and Funky Joseph found breakthrough wickets, but the Easts still saw themselves to 103 in the fifteenth over, and ended the day on 5/140 from 23 overs. Three wickets to Scary Spice, and one each to Neale and Woody. The Arms lost the first innings in just 35 overs of play, and already trailed by 73 after 49. Having the week to decide how to approach the following Saturday, pundits were surprised to find the Arms tardy again and the Easts electing to continue their innings instead of sending the Arms in to bat in a bid for outright points. They chanced their hand in a mad dash for runs instead, deciding the margin to be inadequate and first fell at 141 to a fired up Funky Joseph, who continued on his wicket taking way and finished with the only quality performance for the game of 6 for 39. Easts all out for 183, 106 runs ahead of the Arms.

40 overs became the target for the CACC, as surviving that long would salvage some pride and avoid an outright loss. The traditional opening duo of Mits and Mary strode to the crease and laid the foundation of a partnership before Neale fell to Dale for 7 in the 13 over. Wheeler followed soon after for 13 and Burton may as well have not bothered taking guard and falling for a duck from a failed pull shot that came off the gloves. Choice and Honey went about rebuilding some pride in the innings and showed resistance and patience against the consistent line and length from the Easts. But in the 29th over, Grieve fell to an LBW appeal on 25 and then Cooper was caught on 10 without another run to the total score. Candyman and PJ chanced their hand but fell on 5 and 1. The Rock and the Admiral had to see to holding off the barrage for ten more overs before the ordeal could be over and conceded as a loss, and not an outright. The pair played more shots that were seen in either CACC innings, both giving chances to the fielding side and forcing teammates on the sidelines to swallow their hearts before the Rock was caught out on the last ball of the 40th over for 20 and the Admiral finished with an unbeaten 14. Arms 8 for 107, one run ahead of the Easts first innings.

A truly dark chapter in the annals of a proud history. The only way from such a performance is onwards and upwards, and the only guarantee is that the Arms will fight back. That is our way.

Round 4: Oct 22 and 29 v Troopers at Jellicoe Park
Troopers all out 111. CACC 7 for 113. 1st innings win to CACC.

CACC bowling: NealeD 6-1-2-19, KingD 4-0-1-17, ThurlingP 8.1-1-2-10, LangA 5.1-0-3-17, AngellS 7-1-2-20, JosephJ 4-0-0-21.
CACC batting 1st innings: 6 for 113 - WheelerC 2, NealeD 30, GrieveH 19, KingD(c) 17, CooperP 19, BurtonA 7, HarveyP 4no, HarveyJ 5no. ThurlingP dnb, LangA dnb, AngellS dnb, JosephJ dnb.

The Admiral surveys the wreckage of the Troopers after the battle of Jellicoe: After Rnd 3 that has been described as the darkest day in CACC history, the Arms went into the Rnd 4 clash with the Troopers as underdogs.  Well, that is according to the Fat Woman (aka Spili Geftakis of the Troopers) who wrote the following on the SMCA website during the lead-up to the match:

"Troopers versus Cricketers Arms this week: finally the Troopers will have an easy victory 8 wickets or 150 runs is my guess" and "anyhow Troopers will be on 3 wins after we destroy Cricketers Arms this week last time we met in Winter it was a HUGE 7 wicket victory to the Troopers - Bowled CA out for 105 and chased that total down for the loss of only 2 wickets."

This was all the motivation that the mighty CACC needed as they headed down to Jellicoe Park, keen as mustard and without the hangovers and ineptitude that plagued them during the infamous East Sydney game.  They were greeted by a fine day, a little dew in the longish grass and a skipper with a glint in his eye - the CACC was back and this time without the robotic Austrian accent.  The Sticky King proceeded to put the boundary cones out and after a comparison was made with the size of the boundaries to the MCG by the Troopers, the game got underway.

The Troopers won the toss and batted on a day that seemed right to bat. Hot, long grass and wet outfield.  Fat Woman faced only an over before falling to the slowest of slower balls from the Admiral (8.1-3-2-10). After all of the talk of the previous week Fat Woman all of a sudden didn't have much to say as the Admiral thanked him for such an easy caught and bowled. In only his second game for the Arms, Buffy the Trooper Slayer (aka Simon Angell 7-1-2-20), bowled with good pace and bounce to soon have the Troopers reeling at 3 for 14 with the prized wickets of Dadswell and Morvan. The Admiral was relieved by Mits Neale (6-1-2-19) who took a customary wicket in his first over proving once again that the Skipper knows when to make a bowling change.  Buffy was relieved at the Northern end by Jaccy J and the Funky Bunch (4-0-0-21) who bowled well until taking a nasty blow to the ankle forcing him from the field. Jaccy was relieved by the Hanging Judge (Angus Lang 5.1-0-3-19) who, with beautiful outswing and the help of both Honey Cooper and Bad Lieutenant P.Harvey with great catches, destroyed the Troopers middle order taking 2 wickets in 2 balls and the Troopers slight fightback was snuffed out quickly and efficiently like a guilotine.  The last two Troopers hung around for a while and it took the guile of the Sticky King and the outswing of the Admiral to remove them.  Troopers all out for 111 in the 34th over.

At the end of the day the Arms had to face 12 overs and with the usual partnership of Proud Mary (2) and Mits Neale (30) striding to the crease all looked well.  That is until Mary stroked a halfhearted cut into the hands of a Trooper at point in the 3rd over.  A shaky start.  Mits was then joined by Hamish "Choice" Grieve (19) who along with Dave batted sensibly for the loss of no more wickets at the end of the days play. After the comprehensive flogging the CACC bowlers and fielding handed theTroopers it was little wonder that the Fat Woman was far more humble in the next weeks SMCA discussion group.  "Arms were very lucky to role the Troopers for 111. Still I guess 50 more than the Arms will manage. Currently 1/11 off 12 overs - with housing commission homes surrounding Jellicoe Park the last thing they need is sedating cricket!"

At the start of the second week's cricket Choice and Mits headed out to consolidate their innings and bring us easily home. They batted together for 53 runs and 25 overs before both of them were bowled in quick succession. This brought the Sticky King (17) and Honey Cooper (19) to the crease who batted well together knocking the ball around and compiling runs.  "Great shot Honey!"  Both were undone in embarassing circumstances by Fat Woman - who was described on the sideline as Right Arm Runs. The temptation to smash him out of the park proved too much for both of them but they had put the CACC in a strong position. Maverick Burton (7) joined the fray with a required 15 left and contributed 7 with some good batting until he continued his sad and unlucky at times, run of outs this season - the table will turn though and another dominant innings is around the corner for him. It was left to the Rock (5*) and the Bad Lieutenant (4*) to stop the rot. A big appeal against the Rock which he thought was out made him contemplate a Gilly-like walk although he thought better of it remembering that he was playing the Troopers. Good Ship Harvey brought the Arms home safely in 53 overs. Perhaps not one of the most dominant displays of batting in CACC history but it got the job done and if gritty determination is what it takes to win games this season the CACC have proven that they have it in droves.

Player of the Season points went to Admiral (3) because the Sticky King felt sorry for him, Geoff Ong (2) from the Troopers who was their best bowler and batsman (unlike the Troopers to rely on one single player isn't it) and Mits (1) for a great innings of 30 and fine bowlng in the first innings.  A great victory to the Arms to silence the critics and to get the steamroller started again.  Promising performances from all the batsmen and bowlers and tight fielding throughout the Troopers innings bodes well for the future.  Thanks to Spili for the words of encouragement and motivation!

Comments from The Lord High Admiral: Honey and the Admiral arrived at Jellicoe Park 2 weeks ago thinking that they were early only to find a very keen group of CACC men already there and raring to go.  Candyman lost the toss and informed the throng that they were to take to the field.  At the time the CACC was not disappointed with this result but little did they know what horrors were to follow.

PSJ C started slowly with Buffy (12-0-3-30) and Woody (11-0-0-57) starting well bowling good deliveries that were very hard to get away.  Buffy had the middle stump cart-wheeling out of the ground for one of the PSJ C opening bats and after 12 overs they were 1/21. But then the CACC rot set in. Some poor fielding and catching meant that PSJ C consolidated their innings to be 1/86 at the halfway point.  The pressure of the early overs had been released.

But it was only to get worse as PSJ C, with 9 wickets in hand, decided to go after the runs in a risky fashion swinging across the line and driving anything over pitched.  Although playing dangerous shots in the air the PSJ C players had good eyes and their big swings were either able to pierce the field or go over the top.  In the second 25 overs of their innings they were able to score 163 runs (6.5 runs per over) for the loss of only 5 wickets.  An estimated 10 dropped catches, some that would have normally been swallowed, by the CACC fielders compounded the issue and frustrated the bowlers. There were also 24 extras bowled in the innings (1b, 2lb, 10w, 11nb) - including one caught and bowled off a no-ball.

RSVP (5-0-2-38) and Buffy were the only wicket takers for the innings with Buffy knocking the stumps out of the ground on three occasions and Woody and PJ taking good catches off RSVP's bowling.  Soul Glow (5-0-0-25), Judge (7-0-0-34) and the General (3-0-0-19) bowled well in stages but the attacking attitude of the PSJ C batsmen proved tough to bowl tight against. Candyman (6- 0 43) couldn't quite get his length right and the batsmen never let him settle into his line and length.  PSJ C finished their day on 249.  The CACC fielders and bowlers felt dejected but the batsmen were confident that they could give the run chase a good shake.

In the nets during the week there were many keen CACC batsmen ready to take the fight to the PSJ C bowling playing shots and practising their advance down the wicket to opening bowlers. Some observers thought it may have been overconfidence but others thought the best way to go down in this situation was to go down swinging. Thankfully it wasn't required at all as on Saturday morning the heavens smiled on the CACC boys and it bucketed down.  3 overs were bowled with the Judge and Proud Mary scoring 1 each in a partnership of 5.  Sanity prevailed and the players left the field and play was abandoned.  An hour later at the Trinity Bar on Crown St (the Cricketer's Arms wasn't open yet) there were blue skies.  The CACC had been
saved.  Although some CACC batsmen believed they had been robbed of easy runs and a glorious victory.

Round 7: Dec 3 and 10 v MPK Dragons
Day 1 had to be abandoned due to the ground being unfit for play because of overnight rain.

Day 2: Bright, fine weather - but it didn't do us any good. We got smashed. MPK Dragons won the coin and batted to be 3 for 173 after their alloted 25. We fell into a big hole and we sent packing for 82 in the 24th.
CACC bowling: LangA 1-?-0-8; TeasdaleAD1-?-0-7; JosephJ 5-?-0-50; LeemanM 7-?-2-27; AngellS 7-?-1-24; LeMarquandS 4-?-0-48.

The Grand Admiral's match report will appear real soon - but creativity cannot be hurried.....

Round 9: Feb 4 and 11 v Petty Sessions C
PSC won the toss and sent the Arms in on a gloomy semi-drizzly morning and a wet slow outfield at MP 12. Wheeler was immovable until Mr Sticky made him run three twos in succession resulting in all bodily systems going down and with total muscle meltdown apparent, skied one to be stretchered off for a crafty 37. Last heard off recovering with herbal treatments. Good support from middle order and a small late rally by the tail saw us done and out for 171 alas still with a couple to go. Petty Sessions to bat next week but with Dutchy back and JJ well rested it's headed for a good one.
Day 2 started with highest hopes but it was not to be. A few errors in the field didn't help but PSJ batted well, kept their cool and recorded a comfortable win with overs to spare. Chris Wheeler copped a nasty ripped ligaments finger injury in going for a hot one at gully.

WheelerC c 34, NealeD lbw 4, LangA b 6, TeasdaleD b 7, KingD c 27, O'SullivanT b 2, CooperP b 29, ThurlingP c 8, HollandJ b 4, HarveyJ n.o. 14, WoodwardM b 7.
 NealeD 7-?-0-34; KingD 7-?-1-42; ThurlingP 8-?-0-30; HollandJ 8-?-1-21; WoodwardM 3-?-2-8; JosephJ 6-?-2-32.

Round 10: Feb 18 and 25 v Clinton Perren Invitational
Your correspondent was laid up on day 1 but DK reports CPI knocked up 190 odd with CACC 0 for a couple at end of play. Then sensational news - Woody snares only the second hattrick in CACC history. Full coverage from the Grand Admiral shortly. Last reports had Woody recovering slowly from being crushed by 10 CACC bodies in unseemly display of emotion. Hmmm, good thing CACC didn't make it into World Cup ....

Day 2: CACC bundled out for 99 and with it, the semis and 2005-06 glory. It was just one of those seasons.

NealeD 5-?-1-22; KingD 4-?-0-25; TeasdaleD 2-?-0-22; LeMarquandS 12-?-3-55; ThurlingP 7-?-1-20; JosephJ 5-?-1-16; WoodwardM 11-?-4-38 (hattrick!)
