Report:
Goose won the toss and batted on a fine warm day at Scarborough but things did not go to plan at all and the Bullesyes went down fighting to lose the semi and bow out from the 5ths this winter.

The GSNDS opening bowlers were in ultra mean mode and bowled with hostility and accuracy to have Undies and VS out in short time - Greg to a hook before he had his eye in and Varun to a drive that was going to bring down a 747 if it had only connected. With James and AB under the hammer the scoring slowed and we never really recovered from the pressure in the pre-drinks session. In the first 16 overs there were 9 maidens with Mike Benjamin putting down an impressive 6-5-0-2 and the score stood at just 4 for 43 at the break. Goose had a few lucky breaks and it looked for a while that it going to be his day with the knock we needed but he went 22 just as he was beginning to get confident. Aaron did all the hard work to steady things but had no luck when he holed out to an excellent catch. Alex padded up to an in-swinger and the bowler got the nod. Jez halted the rot with a steady run of singles and twos but with Rock in and the overs vanishing groundhog day struck with a repeat of last week's run out stuff up but it was a valuable 19. Ditto Slem but by then it was goodnight nurse in the 36th with JJ going on the last ball with JH on 11 wishing it was summer and 50 overs. It was without doubt the worst innings of the season and of the 104 GSNDS chipped in with a handy 33 extras.

Nonetheless, games have been won defending fewer runs and it wasn't over yet. Dangerman Mark Appleton went lbw to Slem with the score at 23 and a sliver of light appeared, but only to have it dimmed with a solid next stand of 52 before Greg held on to a hot one at gully off Varun and it was 2 for 75. Things brightened with two quick wickets, the first a tickle to JH of Jacob and then a great catch to Aaron of Slem to see the back of Mike Benjamin who had held the innings together with an excellent knock of 37. Four for 83 and we were still alive. But a few solid hits took it to 103 before wickets fell to Alex and Goose - 6 for 103. Getting 3 for none has been done, but it didn't happen today alas and it game, set and match at 6 for 105. Slem had a an excellent day with 6-2-2-10, with Alex (just 8 conceded off 5), Varun, JJ, and JB each sharing one apiece. Catches to Greg, JH, and AB.

Sticky moments:

Considering the team went from 7ths to the 5ths it was a great effort to get to the semis with only a single loss in the preliminary rounds and Goose can look back on his first season as a CACC skipper at what was as well as what may have been. Greg was the standout bladesman with 7 digs for 331 at 66.2 which included two 80+s. Next was Jez with 6 inns for 124 at 31.0 and Aaron on 104 at 14.9. Jez took the bowling hons with 13 at 9.8 from 36 supported by Slem 7 for 81 at 11.6 off 33 and Aaron 7 at 15.7 off only 12 overs. Duffy is in there as well with 6 at 16.8 off 24. The mean man bowling award was close but Slem on a miserable 2.5 conceded per over just sneaked ahead of Rob on 2.6 and Alex on 2.9. Gloveman Rock notched 7 catches and Greg was next with 5, with Slem and Aaron on 4.

Jeremy took out the 5th grade SMCA 5th grade bowling award. Greg was runner-up in the 5ths batting aggregate and also runner-up in the Player-of-the-Season Points award and Jez was 4th. We just may have a drink or two to that.
