MATCH REPORT
On a day much better suited for sailing 18-footers with a brass-monkey crew than playing cricket , Gladstone Small Neck Development Squad (GSNDS) won the toss and batted in very cold and windy squally conditions at a good Moore Park 21. Jeremy H. bowled with aggression, accuracy and pace to unsettle the top order and finished with a fine 3 for 5. Dave, Gerard, and Simon Macca got one each and catches went to Jacob (2), Greg and John. A few more were dropped but we blamed them on the weather.
After lunch with the chilly conditions only marginally better and rain still threatening Greg and Macca opened and played very steadily until Macca went for 13 including two well stuck 4s for a solid stand of 46. Menga joined Greg and they took it to 78 when Meng was stumped for 9 attempting a hook. Greg retired for a patient 40 with signs that his timing was clicking at last and his broken finger mercifully none the worse for the outing to earn 2 points. Gerard and Jeremy H. then comfortably played out the day for a big win by 7 wickets. Jeremy's fine combined bowling and batting effort gained him Man of the Match and 3 points.
With Phil's departure to London, Meng generously agreed to take on being CACC Treasurer and Greg will assist Dave in organising future 5th grade games. Many thanks Menga and Greg. (JMH 29/06/02)

There must be something about being a first-up skipper in the CACC teams - Jeremy Holland last week in the Gold's game rattled up a near match-saving 78 and today Greg not only won the toss but calmly stroked a faultless 40 to set up arguably CACC's best performance of the season so far. Tim was looking hot but a low edge to the keeper got him. Recruit and banana bender Craig Ilot joined Greg to see off Summer Hill's quicks and went on to a classy 41 to match GD in a partnership of 80 - not bad considering he hadn't touched a bat since summer. Jeremy Holland tried to move things along but was caught in the deep. John just enjoyed himself in the winter sun and paddled a neat 34 before being run out on the second last ball of the dig. Jeremy Sims however wasn't buying that deal and crunched out 42 including 3 big 6s in no time flat. James and Simon swung lustily and Meng was left to see out the last ball - all up an impressive 195.
The Summer Hill openers looked good for a while but the partnership was broken with a lovely in-swinger from Jeremy Holland. Tim then took a hot slips catch that would have otherwise re-arranged his face and we felt we had the match under control. Menga got into the action with a 2-for as did Craig with a remarkable 2 for 4 off 4 with three maidens when Summer Hill were trying push on. Macca and Jeremy Sims got one apiece and Tim came back at the end to finish also with a personal 2-for. One of Summer Hill's openers all but carried his bat for a gritty 41 to lend respectability to their score. The Blue's fielding was fine and all up it was a result to match the weather for the day - one of Sydney's best. Many thanks too to Aaron who came along to lend a hand when Macca had to leave early. Three man-of-the-match points to Craig, two to Simsy, and one to the Duff. (JMH 13/7/02)

This was Tim day for sure - Bondin and Simons, but more of that later. Greg lost the toss and the Donnas decided to bat in a Blues must-win match as a loss would have had CACC out of the semis. Walkers and joggers at Centential Park out to catch the winter sun sensed the occasion and the crowd at times must have been in the high single figures. The pressure was up with most of the Donnas' s bats threatening to break out and thump a big one. A couple of hard chances put down (Jeremy was the unlucky bowler) were met with groans but these moments were more than balanced with five catches snapped up and only one batsman got to the critical 40. Craig and Pete got two wickets each and all CACC bowlers except Greg figured positively on the scorebook. There was concern after 17 overs when the Donnas were 100+ but a great effort in the second half saw them all out at 32 overs for a getable 140. Cap'n Duffy, showing great foresight, held Tim Simons in reserve to get him fired up for batting. It can be reported however that he did get in some sledging of the highest order to mark his return to active playing.
It was all very well that we thought 140 was not much of an ask but that opinion was severely threatened when the Duff, John and then Craig was each in and out with the Blues sagging at 3 for 16. Tim Bondin however had other ideas and played a superb aggressive innings in partnership with a most watchful Jeremy and they lifted Blues spirits to go to 51 before Jeremy was run out attempting a quick single. Tim was joined by Tim Simons who was concentration itself until a smart lofted on-drive for 4 came along and we knew he was back. The Donnas changed tactics and brought on a spinner. Simmo answered this with 4, dot ball, 6, 6, 6, dot ball and the match had swung. Tim Bondin shortly retired on 42 and Tim S. took over as senior partner but was bowled on 33. We were getting closer but there was still 44 to get when Aaron came in and steadied things but he watched as Pete and Meng came and went. Tim Bondin returned still with 30 to go. Aaron hit two excellent sweeps and an off -drive to take it to within 11 when he was judged lbw. Hearts stopped for a fraction when a hard-struck straight drive from Tim grazed the bowler's fingers on its way to the boundary but that was the Donnas last hope and next over he cruised to 68 and we had won. Phew! A great game.
3 points to Tim Bondin, 2 to Donnas's S.French, and 1 to Tim Simons. (JMH 28/07/02)

The one that got away, perhaps. Nonetheless, Kurrajong never gave in and in the end won well considering that at 3 for 90 and cruising in our chase they must have begun to think that the game was probably slipping out of sight.
Kurrajong won the toss and batted. They got stuck in from ball 1 clearly with the intention of building a big score and it raced to 59 off the first 10. S.Prasad knocked up a quick 40 mainly with hard on-drives and pulls and things were looking a bit serious. The first wicket went to Tim Bondin and with Prasad retired to the sidelines the rate slowed markedly and we were back in the game. Only two of the remaining Donnas got going with modest scores of 25 and 15 due to some fine tight bowling particularly from Gerard (3 for 11 off 6) and Aaron (1 for 2 off 3). Dave had the lower order in knots and when Prasad returned we were on top with the count at 8 for 134. He was in good touch however and whacked another 20 before Pete caught him with a fine high stretching catch on the boundary (to add to an earlier top catch) and we went to lunch needing 155 to win.
Our batting plan was for openers Burton and Harvey to puddle about for a bit and prepare the way for the famous five - Ilot, Bondin, Brown, King, and Holland - to take us to victory. Alas, Aaron and John hardly got their feet wet when they were back on the beach but thereafter the plan worked well enough. Craig refused to give in (although he claimed he was seeing the ball like a marble) and Tim looked like repeating his great innings when we last played the Donnas but an excellent ball got him on 21. Not bad though - 3 down for 41. Gerard and Craig then consolidated as per the plan but within a touch of his 40 Craig was caught behind on 37 - a tough break, but only 4 for 102 and we were still looking good. Gerard completed his 40 comfortably and retired for a well-earned quencher. But on 111 Dave misjudged a leave and was dismayed to see his off-stump heading towards the airport. Pete and Meng swung lustily but missed and then a calamity on 112 as Gerard, back in, tickled one to the keeper - 8 for 112 with skipper Jeremy marooned at the other end watching things disintegrate from a stroll in the park to near disaster. His task now was to get 43 by himself off 10 overs. It got close - a combination of careful singles and fours from the loose ones got us to just 19 short when another snick to the keeper has us done.
And so the winter campaign for the CACC Blues ended for 2002 - not bad: 8 played, 4 wins, 3 losses, 1 rained off.
