Match Report
On a peerless mid-June day just made for winter cricket Gladesville won the toss and batted at a dry Moore Park 23.
Gladesville openers faced some hostile bowling from the Cricketers who had them 2 for 15 before A. Calvarius and S. Burtenshaw gave as good as they received with hooks, pulls and drives to put on a promising partnership of 45 and were only parted by a stunning slips catch by Gerrard Brown. S. Burtenshaw went on to go for 36 and earned two points for a good knock. Resistance crumbled somewhat after that and the RSL boys were all out for 103. Bowling honours were shared around with Jeremy Holland, Tim Bondin, Meng Lee getting 2-fors and Jimmy Hislop and new recruit James Burrell chalking up one each. Notably, Tim was on a hat-trick with his pair.
Cricketers began cautiously with Mike Harvey and Jeremy Holland putting on a solid stand of 40 before Mike was well caught attempting a pull. Jeremy was joined by John Harvey who continued with useful prods and pushes but upon Jeremy (1 point) being bowled by one that came back just enough, Gerrard Brown decided enough was enough and proceeded to knock the RSL slows all over the park with 4 sixes and 3 fours in a quick-fire 41n.o. and three points for man-of-the match. James Burrell and Jimmy Hislop finished matters off and the team repaired to their namesake pub and drank quite a few to celebrate a good win and to say goodbye to skipper Mike who is off to play in the London Weekenders (and do some work or other between digs).
Many thanks from everyone Mike for three seasons of tireless effort and we all wish you a terrific time over there.
Jeremy Holland was unaminously elected as the new 6th grade skipper. (JMH 23/06/02)

Match Report
Jeremy continued Mike's fine tradition of losing the toss and the Longneckers took to the short boundary of MP23 like ducks to water by slapping, swatting, driving, hooking and generally swinging at everything in sight to knock up a daunting 8 for 219, headed by a fine dig of 87 n.o. by their skipper. We didn't have a lot to drink to at the Cricketers about our bowling, however Greg netted couple of late wickets and everyone else chalked up a one-for including Jacob's first for the season. The fielding was more the goods with catches to Jeremy and Greg (2) and only one hard chance put down. Greg's second in particular was worth the price of the admission ticket - fielding at point he had to run a country mile towards cover and then do a World Cup goal-saving fling to his right to snatch a one-hander as the ball was an inch above the grass. A Classic Catch in any company.
The gale winds had mercifully slackened when CACC took to the crease but we got off to a bad start when Macca swinging lustily missed and departed with the quacker in pursuit. John and James B. steadied matters and put on 60 in good time (helped considerably by a few Longneck wides) until John failed to connect and was cleaned up for 18. James carried on for a solid 37 being caught on the boundary attempting a second six. James H. also hit a memorable six with the V600 before being unluckily run out by a direct hit. At this point Jeremy was 24 and with a never-say-die belief raced time to create real worry in the Longneck ranks. He almost bought off a miracle but a skidder got him on 78 after having scored 41 on his own with Menga as running partner. His two points were well-earned. (JMH 7/7/02)

Capt. Jeremy won the toss on the warmest day of the winter season so far at an excellent Scarborough 3 and asked Kingsford Nazgul to bat. The Nazgul openers batted with resolution however there was also much playing and missing before getting painfully (via Jeremy et al) to a stand of 28. Greg then pounced on a well struck cut to take another screamer of a catch at gully off Simon to set up the break. That inspired even better bowling and the Nazguls wilted without much fight to be all out for 37 in 20 overs. Greg at one point was on a hat trick before finishing with a remarkable 3 for 1. Macca was in the thick of it with 3 for 4 off 4 and Aaron made it look all too easy with a one-over burst to clean up the tail with 2 for 5. James B. snapped up an excellent running backwards catch and was also the thrower in a run out, but it was a day for the bowlers who between them turned in the performance of the season.
CACC opened with Aaron and James H, with Jimmy going first, lbw, in a somewhat questionable decision. Aaron holed out on 8, Jacob came and went, also holing out with a nice lofted on-side wedge that would have merited a TV replay at the British Open, leaving Gerard and James B. on cruise control to take the match after 9 overs for the Gold boys by 6 wickets - and very early drinks at the Cricketers.
Match points: 3 to Greg, 2 to Macca. (JMH 21/7/02)
Conditions: Fine and dry but slow outfield. Toss won by Drummoyne who fielded. Result: Drummoyne by 3 wickets

We had our chances today, but all credit to the Old Bastards as we were beaten by a better team on the day. It had rained during the week and the outfield was dampish and slow - the weeds on MP23 showing great appreciation of the change from a month without rain. That may have contributed to Drummoyne's decision to ask us to bat, or of course they may just like chasing - which they clearly do pretty well.
Craig and John each got off to a good start but weren't able to go on. Jeremy played with confidence and one of the chances we blew was when he was run out in a classic mis-field mix-up. Gary batted with style and grace and was looking very good when bowled on 21. It began to look as if it wasn't going to be our day when a slip on a still damp wicket led to Aaron being run out just when he also was looking like going on. Pete got his second lbw in two weeks, and Meng and Jacob had just a few overs to get as many as possible only to fall to good fielding by the Drummoyne boys and some mis-judgement on their part. Lunch was pretty sober as 118 didn't look enough. Drummoyne's bowling was not so much threatening as canny and of course the CACC cause was not helped by four run-outs. Gerard was in the team but had to withdraw with a back injury so more accurately we were 8 for 118 declared. Many thanks to Jeremy's dad who gladly fielded for us and did a great job.
The Drummoyne openers blazed away as if it was their intention to put us out of business ASAP (which it probably was) and had us reeling with 33 off the first three overs. Alan Brown was in a Gilchrist-like mood and knocked up 44 with 6 fours and 2 sixes - although we gave him a life on 28 alas. They didn't have it all their own way however, with our bowlers fighting back with some good spells (2 to Jeremy, 1 each to Jacob, Craig and Pete) and for a while the suggestion of a tight finish was on the cards, but they prevailed comfortably in the end with 6 for 119 off 22 overs. Deadly Gary struck with a direct hit run-out and Craig also had a direct hit and was most unlucky not to get Keith to agree with our appeal as another wicket at that point would have made things interesting. Good catches to Jeremy and Craig.
Three points to Alan Brown (Old B.), 2 to Jeremy Holland, 1 to F. Pentecost (Old B.) (JMH 04/08/02)

There's probably not a lot to say about this one - that we came second about sums it up. Newtown won the toss and didn't hesitate to bat on a fine dry day at a weedy Moore Park 17. We were really doing quite nicely with the pressure on at 7 for 85 but the Chetty brothers came together and proceded to re-build the Newtown innings with an unbeaten partnership of 89 so what had looked a fairly straightforward run chase now looked more challenging at 175 to win. Nav Chetty in particular batted very well for a fine 69.
Pete Thurling was the standout bowler with 3 for 9 off 6. He also sent down the only 2 maidens of Newtown's innings. Meng Lee snared 2 for 26 off 4 and Jeremy bowled without any luck to finish on 1 for 28. Gerard took two excellent catches (and to his great dismay dropped another) and John and Gary combined to get a run out.
CACC got off to a slow start against a good pacy attack - only managing 25 off the first 10, but Gerard and Macca were looking to bring it back with a solid stand which Gerard continued with Jeremy and by the halfway point they had taken it to 60 - 114 to go off 15 and just possible. Gerard collected another 40 and Jeremy and John began to push on but Jeremy got trapped in front sweeping a low full toss and John was caught on the boundary trying a six and things were grim again. With Pete and Meng gone also swinging Gerard returned with the daunting task of getting about 60 or so only to see another likely six snapped up on the boundary with CACC some 50 short. It was certainly the Chetty's day as two critical boundary catches were taken by Nav's brother Nee who also got Newtown's bowling honours with 3 for 26.
So, like last week in the 5ths, CACC were stopped in a semi. In the 6ths we played 8 matches for 4 wins, 3 losses and 1 rained out.
Highlights: Jeremy Holland 4-8; Simon McInerny 3 -4, Pete Thurling 3-9. Jeremy Holland 78, Gerard Brown 41n.o., 52, Greg Duffy 41n.o.
Gerard: This may have been Gerard's last match with the Cricketers as he is re-locating to greener pastures. He will be greatly missed as not only does he presently hold (and may for ever more) the highest individual score (167 no), but he is also a key bowler, a great slipper , a supporter of the pub, and second only to Tim Simons as the top witsman sledger. We all wish him the very best.
