Match report from PJ:
"STRONG ON PAPER" SIDE PERFORMS LIKE WET MILK ARROWROOT

A good toss to win was duly lost and set the tone for the rest of what turned out to be a very short outing.  Inserted on an overcast morning the Stickymen got off to a flyer courtesy of a 12 run opening over from the Edgemasters paceman and a quick calculation (12 x 36) had those in the pavilion eyeing a 400 plus score.  The fact that all twelve of those runs were sundries and the small matter of losing an opener to the first legal delivery of the day didn't dampen the happy camp on the boundary.

The two David's (Neale and Chin) knuckled down and nurdled the score along to 27 before one, two, three but wait there's more - yes four wickets fell without the scorers being unduly troubled.  Le Marquand was asked to hurry things along a little and fresh from Kokoda heroics the versatile actor responded with a flurry of big shots.  The ex-league players departure presented the lower order with a golden opportunity to bat out the remaining 33 and half overs remaining but the backbone of the batting chose instead to follow in the footsteps of their upper and middle order colleagues, the folly of choosing 9 who "could bat" over a lengthy tail never more cruelly exposed ....... all out for 65 (a total that could have been oh so much lower if the Oppo, in a fit of sportsmanship, hadn't given away over 20 sundries to give the Sticky bowlers something to defend).  Respectability a long, long, way away.

Faced with such an imposing target the Edgemasters dug in and looked to all observers to be playing for the draw and whilst not giving up their wickets they certainly didn't appear in any hurry to chase down what most punters thought was a "very gettable" total.  Seth and Le Marquand opened with a hostility sadly lacking from the willow wielders and were unlucky not to secure an early breakthrough - especially as the Edgemasters opened with their regular numbers 8 and 9 (the bowling simply too good for these hapless bunnies).  It took a Vilensky run-out to break the deadlock that was threatening to turn a foregone conclusion into "nail biter of the year" as the E'masters refused all scoring opportunities and the CACC failed to make any inroads into their batting order.

Having shown what a dangerous arm he has, it was only fitting that Vilensky be asked to have a trundle and it was nearly two from two and then three from three but a couple of sharp (though genuine) chances were spilled as the leggie probed the weaknesses of the E'master's top (lower?) order against the ancient art of leg-spin. Not to be out done, Neale at the other end weighed in with two quick wickets as the E'masters suddenly realised that overs were running out, their impossibly long tail exposed and night drawing on.....and with the spectators around the huge Scarborough oval starting to get bored with the priceless display of quality cricket on offer a couple of streaky boundaries knocked the last of the stuffing out of the CACC and victory for the Edgies which seemed unlikely after the first over of the day, was finally secured. It was hard to decipher the score book after the many tears shed made the colours run.

ROUND 2

1sts v Glebe at MP11...- Glebe 188 all out from 35.2 overs. CACC 188 from 35.3 overs. A TIE!

Match report from DaveN (skipper).

Brethren,

It has been noted, primarily by opposition, that the Cricketer's Arms are a bunch of amateurs. It has been noted by others, that our best work is not in fact done on the field, but after the finaldelivery. Free of the burdens of actually playing with the ball, our true Cricketing prowess can express itself. On Saturday, both fine traditions of the CACC were upheld. It was a game of cricket, where for once the scorebook does actually tell the entire story.
CACC lost the toss and were asked to field. Glebe started slowly, repeatedly playing and missing, unable to score quickly of either Bram or Vaughan. Brocky and Slem kept the pressure on and the wickets started to fall. 4/92 at the 20 over mark, and the CACC in a strong position. After the interval, Glebe managed to get a man to 40 and lifted the run rate. 188 all out. 5.2 an over - about par.
Ben managed 6 before making way to take up square leg duties. Varun in typical calypso fashion made his 28 off 4 overs before holing out at deep mid wicket. 2 wickets down but scoring at 13 an over. The equation 4.2 an over, 7 wickets, 32 overs. Brock and King unable to hang around. 4/95 at 18 overs. 5.1 an over, 5 wickets 18 overs. The game is even.Tulloch and Neale fall soon after tea. Slem pitches in with a quick fire 11. The highlight being a passage of play involving a free hit no ball that was missed, but the subsequent delivery, which was not a free hit dispatched for 6 without any apparent change in the batsman's disposition. 8 an over, 2 wickets, 8 overs.

Enter Burton and Vaughn. Burton whose summer aggregate would have been about 38 and Vaughan, injured during the mornings play and on debut. Ben and Varun now scoring. Burton scratchy at first, but growing in confidence (as apparent by the reverse sweep for a single) keeping up with the run rate then exceed it. Burton chips the ball to deep mid wicket. 7 an over, 3 overs, 1 wicket. A flurry of boundaries and quick singles, Vaughan gets us to 5 off 6 balls, 1 wicket. A slog for 2. 3 from 3 balls 1 wicket. Another slog. CACC all out for 185. Hysterical scenes as the two teams meet mid-pitch to celebrate a tremendous contest. Ben and Varun however have yet to give up hope...

The CACC may not be professionals on the field, but are armed with plenty off it. The combination of overpaid accountants, lawyers and actuaries swung into action. If the AFL has taught us anything, its that the result at full time is simply the beginning of negotiations. The scorers retract their opening bid of 185 and up it to 191. Upon scrutiny by the opposition captain and umpire, they retreat to 188 final offer. Glebe, still celebrating the close run victory and in a euphoric daze accept and the game is declared a tie.

Score sheets are signed and whisked away to a safe location.

4ths v GSNDS at Parkes Drive May 13 - The Gladys won the toss and knocked up 148 all out off 33 overs. CACC looked good but it slipped away and we fell 21 short to be all out for 127 in 34 overs.

CACC bowling: NealeD 5 - 2 -18; BurtonA 5 - 0- 27; ChinD 4 - 0 - 18; VilenskyR 6 - 1 - 19; CooperP 1.3 - 1 - 8; LeeM 4 - 2 - 12; KingD 4 - 1 - 18; ReynoldsP 4 - 2 -21

CACC fielding: HarveyJ 1 catch, 1 stumping; BurtonA 2 catches, 1 stumping; KingD 2 catches; ChinD 1 catch.

PJ's match report: GROWTH NOTICED BUT ARMS STILL SHORT
After the debacle of the first round, a revitalised Cricketers Arms CC the "Arms") squad looked forward to redemption in Round Deux against one of our old foes the, eponymous Gladstone Small Neck Development Squad (the "Necks").  Inspired by our brothers in cricketers arms tie the week before the thinking at Parkes Drive as the boys dribbled in was that we could go one better.
As the skipper duly lost another critical toss the Arms were asked to limber up and have a bowl.  "Tight" is probably the only word that could be used to describe the opening spell (but largely because I can't find the thesaurus button).  Burton A and Neale D bowled with genuine hostility and determination and Neale was justly rewarded with an early breakthrough.  In the unfamiliar role of first change the Candy King, operating from the Entertainment Q end, tossed a few up for a well deserved stumping as the Rock moved like lightning to whip off the bails and uproot a couple of stumps just to be sure.  Spin was introduced from the Coogee end as well and Reynolds R struck almost immediately (twice) as the Necks were twisted by the Arms tweakers.  Vilensky R was introduced immediately after the drinks break and proceeded to give all who came to watch another Master-Class in leg spin.  As Reynolds took a breather after his tidy two-fer the big crowd called for Meng.  Now the Arms know that cricket isn't just sport - its also entertainment and just as there is Yabba's Hill so too Parkes Drive now has its very own Meng's Gallery as the wily ex-treasurer played to the mob and stunted the Necks development with two quick wickets.  Vilensky chimed in with one of his own as the Barrel Maker and Neale tidied up the tail.  All in all the Arms bowled and fielded very well to constrict the Necks to 148 all out.  Catches to Chin and King (x2), Burton (2 plus a stumping) and Harvey J (1 plus a stumping) with only a couple of small blemishes as two or three tough chances were grassed - would they prove more costly than $2 for the Roo?
Neale and Chin opened in a way reminiscent of a summer flower on a chill winters morn but after a few overs gauging the pace of the pitch they started to free the Arms and play a few shots.  Unfortunately Neale nibbled a Neck and departed for 14 just as the Arms were looking strong.  Neale's public display of affection seemed to afflict the upper middle order as our regular tradesmen the Barrel Maker and Candy Man gave the revolving door on the boundary a work out, shuffling onto and then off this particular stage for 2 and 8 respectively.  Having hit something of a purple match Maverick set about his job with joy and the Arms appeared to take a stranglehold on the game as the Necks started to wilt under Burton's brutal assault.  But just as he was reaching out for a 40 the axe fell.  The start of over 25 saw the bowler take 7 minutes and 42 second to position his mid-wicket fielder - first too deep, then too short, then too square, not square enough but finally just right.  Having had a goodly long time to see exactly where this particular fielder was Burton put away the willow and got out the protractor, sextant and compass and with a hitherto unknown navigational ability hit the next ball directly to the aforementioned.  Never looking comfortable at the crease the skipper departed looking even less so as the Arms stretched for an increasingly unlikely victory.  Harvey J, the Gallery and Reynolds ticked a few off but 21 short was the final equation - all out for 127.
Highlights - Candyman's very professional presentation of Vilensky R's number 71 cap followed by much mirth as Rob then showed everyone the CACC - No. 67 tat that he had done just last week in anticipation.

ROUND 3

1sts v Sydney Tamils at Gough Whitlam May 20. Tamils batted and knocked up a tough 237. The Arms fought hard with three batsmen getting into the 30s, but with boundary riders sitting on the fence at Gough, it was a hard ask and we fell about 30 short.

CACC bowling: MudaliarB: 5 - 0 - 37, SethV: 6 - 3 - 33. NealeD: (c) 4 - 0 - 28, TullochB: 6 - 1- 25, BrockM: 6 - 0 - 41, VilenskiR: 3 - 0 - 24, LeMarquandS: 6 - 2 - 45.
CACC batting: MudaliarB b44; SethV c36; NealeD c14; CooperP b32; TullochB c3; BurtonA c4; BrockM ro31; VilenskiR b0; LeMarquandS no11.
CACC fielding: Catches to Ben Mudaliar, Varun Seth, Dave Neale, Aaron Burton (wkr).

Best on ground points: 3 Ben, 2 Varun, 1 Coops.

Best on ground: 3 points to Rob Vilensky for turning up.

ROUND 4

1sts v FIVE DOCK HOTEL at MP 11 June 3 - CACC 161 lost to Dockers 5 for 163.

We wuz robbed again! No, alas not this time as the Dockers were a classy outfit that we certainly took points off, but they prevailed at the end with a couple of overs in hand. CACC kicked off and batted in seriously cold conditions with a gale behind the bowlers from the southern end. Gutsy performances were registered from openers DaveN and DaveK who fought every ball in the face of the opposition's pacey and aggressive quicks to post a good start with the Dave King still unconquered at drinks (but then snicked-on first ball after !). Bram batted beautifully only to fall on 31 and Matt Brock smashed a great 54 not out supported by a gem from Slem for 19 caught on the boundary. At the end of the 36 we had a competitive 161. The Five Dock boys got this but with 5 wickets down and only a couple of overs in hand. Slem bagged a well-earned 2 for 35 with Tom, Dave Neale, Mr Sticky notching 1 wicket each. No luck for either Bram or Knifey who bowled as tight as but couldn't get an edge. Another 20 or 30 on the board would have been very handy. A few finger-tip chances went down but they were tough ones, not much luck in that direction. (JH)

CACC batting: NealeD c8, KingD b28, TullochB c31, O'SullivanT ro0, BrockM no54, BurtonA c5, LeMarquandS c19, HarveyJ c0, HarveyP lbw0.
CACC bowling: NealeD 6-1-40; KingD 5.2-1-26; TullochB 6-0-14; O'SullivanT 5-1-21; BrockM 5-0-21; LeMarquandS 6-2-35.
CACC fielding: O'SullivanT 1 catch, HarveyJ 1 stumping.

4ths v Crusaders B at Granville Hospital June 18 - Crusaders 6 for 180 defeated CACC all out 118.

CACC bowling: NealeD 6-0-29, TullochB 6-0-15, KingD 6-1-24, CooperP, 6-1-33, BurtonA 4-2-32, CostainM 2-1-17, LeMarquandS 6-1-19.
CACC batting: NealeD ro 19, HarveyJ c 1, TullochB c 53, KingD b 17, CooperP b 9, Burton c 0, HarveyP c 8, CostainM b 1, LeMarquandS b 4.
CACC fielding: NealeD 1 catch, HarveyJ 1 stumping, Tulloch B 2 catches, KingD 1 catch.

Crusaders batted first and at drinks we were travelling nicely with the opposition score held to around 60 or so, but they knocked up 100 off the last 13 overs to post a solid 180.
Bram held the line with a fine 50+, the two Dave's chipped in also but not enough of the CACC batters hit their straps and we were back in the shed all done at 118. (JH)

BOG: Bram 3 - great knock and 2 catches, Aaron - 2 wickets, DaveK - runs and a wkt.

Match scorecard, Player Stats

ROUND 5

1sts v Wenty Waratahs at Scarborough, Sunday June 25 - CACC 8 for 104 defeated Wentys 8-95 (both teams all out).

CACC batting: NealeD b 9, CooperP c 8, BurtonA c 2, DeakerG lbw 32, KingD b 4, LeMarquandS b 26, HarveyP b 0, LeeM b 0.
CACC bolwing: NealeD 6-2-42, KingD 6-1-25, LeMarquandS 6-3-24, LeeM .1-1-0.
CACC fielding: DeakerG 1 catch, LeMarquandS 2 catches, HarveyP (wkr) 2 catches.

Dave Neale reports:

Burton arrived at the ground cranky. He had spent the entire Saturday in a futile attempt to contact those players who showed interest at the beginning of the
season. The sum total of his efforts was a team of 8, 3 of which would not be present for the first ball.

The Waratahs won the toss and elected to bat. Neale elected to forfeit, pointing out the lack of numbers and emphasising the lack of class. The Wenty Captain faced with eager players, an assured victory and a 40 minute drive home, reversed his decision. Advantage CACC.

Neale, Cooper and Burton were tasked with seeing off the new ball and surviving until the cavalry arrived. They failed. The quick fall of wickets saw the farcical situation of the outgoing batsman walking to square leg to assume umpiring duties. At 4-27 the advantage was back with the WW's who generally seemed to be enjoying the day and had no regrets about their decision to flip-flop.

Slem 26 and Slem's mate Graham Deaker 32 scored all the runs ably assisted by sundries 21. 101 all out in the 26th. Prompt payment of the umpire saw the total revised to 104 and once more the brains trust was overheard lamenting the missing 80 or 90 runs.

FOW: 0, 18, 26, 27, 49, 93, 99, 100, 101, 104.

The WWs a man down, started like a team chasing 250. LeMarquand (3-24 from 6) bowling fast and tight opened with a genuine outside edge providing HarveyP with the first of his two catches. Neale (2-42 from 6) bowling slow and loose had one held on the boundary. King 2-24 from 6 and more remarkably conceded no leg side boundaries in his best display of control for the season. Neale threw the stumps down from 30 meters to run out a meandering tail ender. 8-95 at the end of the 18th.
The equation - 1 wicket, 9 runs, 108 balls. All 3 frontline bowlers had completed their 6. Who to bowl the 19th?

What was needed was someone who could bowl straight and full. Maybe wobble it around. Lee had stayed back at training to practise his accuracy. Bowling at the stumps collecting the ball and bowling again. His dedication was now to be rewarded with the opportunity to win the game. How would he respond with the match in the balance...

Meng's first ball was very short and very wide. I had time to reflect that that was not the sort of delivery that we had discussed. The number 9 also had time to reflect, and upon doing so, promptly hit the ball hard and flat to Deaker who held the catch. The first win for CACC First's. Lee finishes with figures 1-0 from 0.1.

Best on ground:

3 LeMarquand - Runs and Wickets
2 Lee - Cometh the hour
1 Deaker - Runs and catches

4ths v PSJ X at Waterworth Park, July 1 - CACC win by forfeit.

One sniff that the oppo is playing the mighty Arms 4ths and it's a forfeit!

ROUND 6

 1sts v Sydney Tamils at MP11 July 8 - Tamils 8 for 214 defeated CACC 7 for 187.

CACC batting: NealeD b 27, MudliarB 41no, BurrellJ c 7, BrockM b 12, CooperP ro 34, BurtonA stp 25, LeMarquandS ro 26, HollandJ 2 no. VilenskyR b 0, LeeM dnb.
CACC bowling: NealeD 6-0-35, MudliarB 6-1-32, BrockM 5-2-26, CooperP 6-1-38, LeMarquandS 6-1-31, VilenskyR 4-1-27, LeeM 3-1-20.
CACC fielding: BrocvkM 1 catch, CooperP 1 catch, LeMarquandS 2 catches, BurtonA (wkr) 1 catch.

Slem reports:

Le Marquand on debut as skipper lost the toss and the CACC were sent out to field. Slem (1/31 from 6) and Neale (0/35 from  6) opened up and contained the openers. Brock   (2/26 from 5) and Cooper (1/38 from 6) the both bowled well. Drinks saw the Tamils a couple down for 101. Post drinks Mudaliar(1/32 from 6) was introduced while Lee (1/20 from 3) and Vilensky (1/27 from 4) held up the other end to see the Tamils 8/213 at the end of their allotted overs. Two catches to Le Marquand, one each to Cooper and Brock, and one to 'keeper Burton who was as reliable as ever behind the stumps.

The run chase started well with Neale (27) and Mudalier (a magnificent 41 not out) getting us off to a flyer. Jimmy "the Goose" Burrell (7) looked promising on his brief return before holing out. Brock (12) played with typical flair while Cooper (34) was amongst the runs again and put on a splendid 50 run partnership with fellow blood nut Burton (25). Le Marquand (26) swung lustily for his runs but by the time Holland (2 n.o), Vilensky (0) and Mudaliar (back from the sheds) got to the crease it was asking a bit much and we went down 7/187 off our 36 overs (or near enough to 36 &endash; we questioned the umpire after he counted no less than 4 five ball overs!).

It was a close fought match all the way and the CACC lads can hold their heads high.

BOG: Ben 3, Pat 2, Slem 1.

ROUND 7

1sts v Five Dock Hotel
The gods conspired against us again today just as we were set for a mighty finish v the competition leaders, but alas it was not to be due to a waterlogged Gough Whitlam, a sad sight.

CACC: Mits Neale, Thoughtful Mudaliar, Rock Harvey, Meng Gallery Lee, Chin Music, Honey Cooper, Dummy Spit Burton, Wily Rob Vilensky.

4ths v Bushpigs at MP 11, July 29
Bushpigs won the toss and batted in good weather (at last) and we were looking good at drinks with the Pigs at a couple for 67 but a few costly overs mid-second term saw them get away to a handy 8 for 187. CACC started well with solid knocks from Ben, the Knife and DaveN but then we faded to near black and finished up a tad short at all out for 155 in the 33rd.

CACC bowling: LeMarquandS 6 -1 - 14, NealeD 6 - 0 - 34, BrockM 6 - 2- 39, ChinD 5 - 0 - 28, BurtonA 2 - 0 -17, MudaliarB 6 - 1- 21, CooperP 5 - 2- 29.
