This is the old penal settlement at Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula. Port Arthur was a penal colony
from 1830 until 1877. See the Port Arthur web site for more detail. The building on the right is the penitentiary (a converted grain store); the circular building in the centre is the old guard tower, with the officers' quarters behind it. On the far left is the Commandant's house. |
