Valley FM 89.5 was founded in 1999 by Chris Moy, when he and a small group of like-minded individuals got together to provide a community radio station for Tuggeranong, a satellite city of Canberra.

The Tuggeranong Valley and surrounding area holds about 100,000 residents/potential listeners.

The full history of Valley FM can be found in the Valley FM website (click here to jump to that site). Valley FM 89.5 now also has a MySpace location. (click here to jump to the MySpace page).

Each week about 50 volunteer radio announcers, just like Chris, present their own radio programs with music covering genres as diverse as classical through to heavy metal. Valley FM 89.5 also broadcasts spoken word, interviews, news, weather, sport, local information, community and sponsorship announcements.

Unlike commercial radio, community radio is not for profit, nor driven by the dollar, and accordingly our announcers are free to present almost any music they wish. This means that local artists can be supported, who might otherwise be overlooked by the commercial radio stations, which have absolutely no interest in folk or world music.
