Steve Johnson, Kingsley and Lord were lively up forward for the Cats. The second term was all Brisbane with Akermanis killing the Cats in the midfield. His dominance helped the Lions kick one 9 point goal, and 5 regular goals to the Cats single goal kicked by Kingsley and margin was 37 points at half time. But following a blast from Coach Mark Thompson Geelong were more determined in the second half with Corey and Enright playing well in the midfield and Mooney performing better in the forward line. David Spriggs kicked the Cats first 9 pointer following a 50 metre penalty and then Enright kicked another 9 pointer and the Cats were within a goal.Geelong led by a point late in the term before the Lions got one back right on 3/4 time. Semi Finals: Geelong V Collingwood, Telstra Dome, Saturday March 8

Then McCarthy took a great pack and goaled, but in that contest Mooney went down on his ankle and he did return, which was a blow for the Cats considering Kingsley did not line up. And that factor contributed to the Cats going goaless for the second and third terms, and also the fact that the team also had a tough match is hot and humid conditions in Cairns the week before. Ablett started the second term with a great running goal from 50 metres and with goals to Chapman (left foot snap) and King (running goal form outside 50) Geelong looked in control during the term. The second term was once again pretty even with Kingsley and Lord kicking goals and when Ablett kicked a late goal the margin was 7 points at half time. Carlton got the first 2 goals of the third quarter and were looking dangerous, but the game changed when McKay hit Riccardi in the head after Riccardi had taken a mark. McKay was reported, and Riccardi given a 50 metre penalty and he goaled from 30 metres to give the lead back to the Cats. Moments later he goaled goaled again, this time on the run from 60 metres. Fremantle V Geelong, Subiaco (Night), Saturday June 14

James Kelly returned to the team, while David Spriggs played his 50th game for the Cats. Geelong suffered a blow when Ben Graham was accidently knocked out by Sanderson in the first minute of the game. Fremantle got the first 2 goals of the match, but Kingsley replied with 2 of his own to see the Cats a goal down at quarter time. Kingsley kicked his 3rd and the Cats hit the front early in the second term, but then Fremantle kicked 2 goals and they were a couple in front But Riccardi kicked his first to cut the lead back to a goal. Then Carr was reported for striking Ling and that seamed to life Ling and he kicked a brilliant goal from around 50 metres out, which would have put Geelong in front, but the umpire paid a free kick against Kingsley for what looked like a legal shepherd and Fremantle took to the ball forward and goaled to give them an 11 points half time lead. Geelong dominated the first 20 minutes of the third term, but they could only manage 1 goal 5, with Kingsley kicking his 4th. Fremantle then got on top and with the help of the umpires scored the next 4 goals to lead by 26 points at 3/4 time. Three incidents in particular frustrated the Cats. Scarlett should have been paid a mark and wasn't, Pavlich should have penalised for taking the ball out of the ruck (new rule this season) and Longmuir was awarded the mark from behind when Harley had hands on the ball in front. Fremantle extended their lead with the first goal of the final term, but the Cats would not lie down and with goals to Kingsley his 5th, Riccardi, Spriggs Lord and finally Ablett they were within 3 points with 15 minutes to play. ROUND 13

Essendon V Geelong, Telstra Dome (Night), Friday June 27

The Cats made 4 changes to the team that lost to Fremantle, but the bigger blow came before the match when Milburn was a late withdrawal. The Cats got off to a great start kicking the first 2 goals, with Ablett kicking a left foot snap and then Spriggs marked and goaled in the square. But then the Bombers lifted and kicked 8 of the next 10 goals for the term, with Steve Johnson selebrating his inclusion by kicking 2 goals. Most of the Bombers goals came from turn overs by the Cats, as the Dons moved the ball forward with little pressure. Paul Chapman went off the ground with a cork thigh and he spent most of the match running around the boundary trying to run it out. The Cats tried to get back into the match in the second term but they could only manage going goal for goal with Essendon. The Dons kicked 5 goals to 4, with the Cats goal kickers Clarke, Spriggs, Kingsley and McCarthey. Dispite his goal David Clarke frustrated Geelong fans with his poor disposal. Once again Geelong tried to reduce the margin in the third quarter but they could not take their chances. Steve Johnson kicked his 3rd goal and then Kingsley marked strongly on the goal line and kicked his second and the Cats were within 4 goals. They could have been closer had Kingsley's attempt of a banana goal from 10 metres out not gone on the full, and Ablett's shot out of a pack not been rulled touched, when Hird was no where near the ball. Ling kicked a great snap shot, and Corey goaled from a set shot kept the Cats in it, but a late one from the Bombers had the margin at 28 points at 3/4 time. Then to start the final quarter Barnard got a very very soft free kick and he goaled and the margin was 6 goals. Riccardi kicked 2 goals in the final term and Bartel kicked his first and one wonders why he was not given more game time. Scarlett was the Cats best player, beating Lloyd all night and keeping him to only 1 goal. The final margin was 36 points.

Brent Moloney was a late inclusion for Jarad Rooke and he played his first game for the Cats. Port Adelaide got off to a great start kicking the first 2 goals of the match with the aid of a strong breeze. The Cats finally got a goal, but Port replied again and kept their lead to 2 goals. But for the second half of the quarter Geelong lifted and they were playing the better football. Ablett handballed to Chapman who goaled, and then after the siren Joel Corey kicked a magnificent 50 metre goal into the wind to give the Cats an unlikely 3 point lead at quarter time. Kicking with the wind Geelong continued their run in the second term. Riccardi kicked a great left foot snap, while Chapman (his third) and Graham goaled from set shots to give the Cats a 17 point lead at half time. Port goaled twice early in the third quarter, but both times the Cats replied those goals. Kingsley marked and handballed to Steve Johnson who goaled, and then Graham marked and goaled. Port Adelaide played better during the second half of the term but they could not score goals and the margin was 14 points at the last change. When Ling goaled early in the last term the margin was 20 points and the Cats looked home since they were kicking with the strong breeze. But the Power had other ideas and with Primus lifting in the forward line they kicked the next 4 goals to lead by 5 points with only just over a minute remianing. But then King got the ball to Sanderson who kicked long and Graham took a great mark 60 metres out from goal. He saw Matthew Scarlett (who had played well on Tredrea) running forward on his own and he attempted to pass the ball to Scarlett. But the ball kept bouncing away from Scarlett and it went through the goals to give the Cats the lead by a point. With 30 seconds remianing Geelong held on for a great upset win against the ladder leaders. Richmond V Geelong, Telstra Dome, Saturday July 12

The Cats suffered a huge blow before the match with Steve King being a late withdrawal along with Jarad Rooke and Cameron Mooney and Henry Playfair (his first AFL game) came into the side. Geelong got off to a great start with Graham and Bartel kicking early goals. Richmond got one back, but Graham kicked a good goal on the run and Kingsley kicked his first and Geelong led by 3 goals at quarter time. After Cameron got the first two goals of the 2nd term Graham continued his dominance by kicking a couple of goals, but he should have kicked more as he missed 3 shots at goal. In between Ablett roved the ball off the pack and goaled. Cameron kept the Tigers in touch by kicking his and the Tigers 4th, buy Mooney replied by marking strongly in the square and goaling to give the Cats a 27 point half time lead. Harley had thrashed Richardson in the first half, while Scarlett was once again at his best and well on top of Ottens. A good pass from Bartel set Ablett up for the first goal after half time, but Richmond replied with the next 2 goals. But Geelong replied with Graham's 5th goal and also a nice running goal from Milburn. Graham could have had another after Richardson attempted to pass backwards, only to kick it straight to Moloney who kicked long Graham. His shot at goal hit the post. Ottens and Richardson kicked 2 late goals to keep the Tigers in the match, 20 points down at the last change. Aaron Lord kicked a great snap goal with his first kick of the match to start the last term, but Richmond then came back. With the help of terrible umpiring they kicked the next 4 goals to get within 2 points. But Ablett gave the Cats some breathing space by kicking his 3rd goal. But Richmond would not lie down and they kicked the next 2 goals to hit the front. Lord then kicked his second goal for the term after marking on the lead and Geelong were back in front. With less than 3 minutes remaining a snap from Blumfield gave the lead back to the Tigers. But with only 90 seconds remaining Geelong forced the ball forward from a boundary throw in and Chapman ran onto the ball and he kicked a left foot goal from centimeters inside the goal line to give the Cats a 4 point lead. After a ball up in the centre a riduculous holding the ball decision was paid against Wojcinski. Richmond got the ball forward, but Scarlett was awarded a free kick after Richardson jumped in his back, and the siren sounded with the ball in Scarlett's hands for the second week in a row.
