ACF Permaculture Training for Nutrition in inner-Havana, 1998-99

· Strengthen food security utilising locally grown vegetables, herbs and fruits with high nutritive value (5)

· Increase availability of medicinal plants for the treatment of common aliments (5)

· Improve organic waste management and supply organic fertiliser (5)

Major Activity Outputs, as per project design:

FORMAL TRAINING COURSES: (5)

Output:

· 42 trainers operating in their own communities able to conduct further courses of environmental garden design using Permaculture principles in small spaces.

Indicators:

A course on Participatory Training Techniques was run
taught by two Australian specialist trainers

21 graduates (62% women).

· Three participants went on to use the techniques successfully in teaching the PDC

A Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course was run
taught by three Cuban staff of FNH (PDC graduates themselves),

21 graduates (76% women).

· The course participants

produced designs for their own community and ran two mini-conferences.

TRAINING MATERIALS: (4)

Output:

· Production and use of training material: 3 videos (30 copies each) and 'How to do it' manual (400 copies), Two issues of Se Puede produced (Sept & Dec 98) (10,000 copies), A new publication still being edited, called ‘How to do Permaculture’.

Indicators:

Two videos made on "How to make a garden" and "How to make compost",
The third on "Medicinal Plants" still being edited at the time of this report, but on track.
The FNH held back 33% of payment to video makers until video of suitable quality handed over.
Copies of Se Puede magazine sent to ACF in Australia.
A report explaining the need for the new publication, and an extensive outline sent to ACF.

BUILDING COMMUNITY NETWORKS: (5)

Output:

· Four community workshops were run in inner-Havana, with 20, 20, 13, and 16 participants,

The number of women was 9, 10, 13 and 7 (one workshop was held just for women).

Indicators:

A list of names, addresses & occupations was provided, and a report on the success of the workshops.
The local government authorities supported the workshops, providing facilities, and organising musicians for a small community event associated with the workshops.
The workshops were held on sites being established as accessible model gardens.
The magazine printed news and information about the local activities, to create a sense of a local network in each area.
Local CBOs (Gardening Club, FMC committee, Proyecto Patio Comunitario) hosted each workshop, and took up the aims of the project.

Output:

· Increased knowledge & production of herbs, greens & medicinal plants in small spaces.

Indicators:

Local health centres and doctors and pharmacies became "collaborators" with the project, and receiving copies of the newsletters, the Planting Calendar and the illustrated booklet produced by FNH called "Medicinal Plants".

· All the courses and workshops included segments on medicinal plants, some of them taught by doctors or pharmacists specialising in medicinal plants.

Output:

· A network of diverse gardens and projects that are practical, replicable models suitable for use as training resources for other zones within these municipalities.

Indicators:

A seed network was established in the Cerro municipality.
Details of material and extension support provided to seven community garden sites has been provided..
Lists of model garden sites published in the magazine.

Output:

· A network of people with teaching and certified design skills to continue to provide support and advice and develop new initiatives in the area

Indicators:

Lists of names and addresses of course participants circulated so the participants can maintain their network

COMPOSTING, WORM FARMING and WASTE DISPOSAL: (5)

Output:

· Community and household composting and worm farming to deal with organic waste

Indicators:

Every workshop and course included segments on issues of waste (composting, worm farming and grey water), and each newsletter and magazine issue included a segment on the topic.

GENERAL PERFORMANCE TARGETS: (5)

Output:

· At least 50 % participation rate by women achieved.

Indicators:

Numbers of men and women reported on all activities (!).

CAPACITY BUILDING: (5)

Output:

· FNH and CBOs with increased skills in urban agriculture, community development, participatory training techniques (5 staff), project development and management (3 staff) with the capacity to run a commercial international PDC course for income generation.

Indicators:

a successful PDC was taught by three Cuban staff, only the second PDC taught in Cuba, and the first taught by Cubans. This demonstrates great capacity of the partner NGO.
FNH cooperated successfully with CBOs, local government, seed saving networks and gardening clubs in all of the activities, demonstrating good project management and good community participation.
The videos were made by the PCCA, a CBO, consulting to the partner organisation, the FNH. This is evidence that the FNH is successfully building linkages with CBOs and is able to do project management.

The quality of the report written by the new staff member, Fausto Lopez, was extremely high.

Recipes with nutrition aims prove popular in the magazine and were included in each newsletter

All Major Activity Outputs were achieved
