Discussion papers are short documents that embody the working 'policies' of the Merri Cohousing group. Any member of Merri Cohousing may write and circulate a discussion paper on any issue affecting the group. New discussion papers are 'tabled' at a Committee meeting, after which feedback is sought from the entire membership before the paper is formally 'adopted' at a Committee or General Meeting.
For more details on the process of writing and adopting discussion papers, see our Discussion Paper on Discussion Papers.
The discussion papers listed here have all been adopted by the Merri Cohousing group, and constitute its by-laws.
The following discussion papers have been tabled by the group and are being circulated among members. However, they have not yet been formally adopted as by-laws and so are not being made public at this stage.
Cohousing is based on a participatory process. Policies are not set from 'on high' by a governing body but are decided by a consensus of members, based on discussion papers written by members.
As a member of the group (even a new member) you are strongly encouraged to write a discussion paper on any issue that interests you. You can also join a working group and collaborate on a discussion paper on an issue of current interest to the group.
Here is a list of issues to get you thinking!
