Possible sites for
MERRI COHOUSING
Merri Cohousing and EcoVillage Inc. is a nonprofit organisation set up
to facilitate the development of cohousing in the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne,
on behalf of its members.
Given the prices of inner-city sites,
we're looking for an area of 2000 to 5000 metres square (a half to one acre),
to build about 24 medium density dwellings.
We would consider retro-fitting an existing building such as a warehouse,
a school, a block of flats, a hotel or a nursing home or other such clustered residential facility.
The Merri Cohousing committee has tabled two relevant documents written by Hamish:
-
Site Selection Discussion Paper, draft3 of which was approved by
the committee in about May 2001.
This paper describes the processes by
which Merri Cohousing decides the "Current site of interest",
the site selection timelines and the "changeover date" if we prefer a different site,
and how we gather information on alternative sites
-
The Site Survey of members' preferences of site location,
which was incorporated into the Personal Requirements
Design and Location Questionnaire
which was sent out to all members in June/July 2001.
CURRENT PREFERRED SITE:
The Merri Cohousing group is currently focussing its intentions on
a site in East Brunwick beside CERES
and the Merri Creek.
It is one hectare of vacant land between Roberts Street and Ryan Street,
bounded by Stewart Street to the North.
In April 2000, buildings on the one hectare site were demolished, and the owners,
a consortium of seven relatives, let it be known that they were considering options to sell or develop on the site.
Merri Cohousing would require approximately one third of this site to develop a 24-unit cohousing.
Go to our Roberts Street Site page for more detailed information on our work on this site.
OTHER POSSIBLE SITES:
- The Abbotsford Convent site on Johnston St and St Heliers St, Abbotsford,
beside the Collingwood Children's Farm.
This site has received lots of publicity.
For more info see the Abbotsford Convent Coalition's web site at
http://www.AbbotsfordConvent.com.au
- Westwyck, the old Brunwsick West Primary School being developed by Lorna Pitt and Mike Hill.
It is on Victoria Street, Brunswick West, between Daly St and Pearson St.
Join in Merri Cohousing's site visit to Westwyck. (See the Events page).
- The old south campus of the Thornbury Darebin Secondary college, on Darebin Creek,
between Raleigh Street and Clarendon Street, Thornbury.
- 1 Aberdeen Street RESERVOIR, vacant land 4860m2 (1.20 acres), zoned residential.
Auctioned Thu 7-Dec-2000 2pm, sold for $855,000 (That's $176 per sq metre for 0.486 ha).
This is a big piece of land NE of Ruthven Station (NE of Reservoir station),
three blocks from High Street. 13 kilometres from Melbourne CBD.
For more info on this site, see the item in the
web archive of the CohousingMelbourne mailing list dated 8 December 2000.
- 112b Herbert St, 2424 m sq sold for $580,000 at Auction Thu 11 May 2000.
Zoned Industrial 3, suitable for subdivision,
This site is 300 m from Northcote railway station, 500m from Northcote
Community Gardens (organic vegie gardens with mud brick meeting house).
One end of the site is on Separation Street. A kilometre west along
Separation Street is CERES, in East Brunswick.
For more info, see the item in the
Cohousing Australia list web archive.
- 30 Union St, Westgarth, Northcote down to Merri Parade and Merri Creek.
0.6 ha Telstra land vacant since about 1996 or 1997.
On the south side is Merri Parade and Merri Creek and the railway bridge and
foot bridge to Rushall Ave.
On the West side is Northcote railway line.
On the East side is a lane.
On the North side is Merri railway station and a reserve.
This land is about 6200 m sq. ie. 0.6 of a hectare.
There is a two story building 17 x 34 metres, but with irregular corners,
making it about 500 m sq footprint.
There are no signs saying it is for sale.
(Adam writes: I asked a site neighbour in the street and he said that he's heard the
Croxton Special school (a couple of stops up the train line) was interested
in a sheltered workshop there.)
