Credit is a convenient way of purchasing items that you might not necessarily be able to afford with cash money. However, if you can't afford to pay your credit card account in full before the interest commences or if your loan repayments are late then the repercussions can be stressful and even life changing.
But debt does not need to spiral out of control and there is no need to hind the bills under the mattress when things get tight. Finding help in managing your credit is available. And there are plenty of options available.
So what can you do if you need assistance in reducing your debt?
Firstly, make time to talk to your bank or the store or supplier that you owe money to, and explain your situation. Ask if you can arrange a payment schedule - a revised schedule if need be - to accommodate your own situation but also that allows them to continue receiving a reasonable regular payment from you.
If this approach does not work, than you are free to contact the Ministry of Fair Trading in your state because you may be eligible for credit relief. You can use the expertise of the advisors in these offices to help you negotiate with the credit provider on your behalf. Credit relief is there to help people just like you, who are experiencing temporary money difficulties.
But what if your problems are far larger than this?
If you still can't see a way to solving your problems, then talking things over with a someone experienced in credit counselling can provide some real guidance. You can find a professional to help you manage your credit or if you have will power you can attempt to reduce the debt yourself. Remember though that debt reduction can sometimes be difficult. You can access free counseling advice through local councils, TAFEs, universities and social security offices like Centrelink.
