One of the mainstays of the Mars Base fleet, the Garfish has been in common use since before the Inbit invasion of Earth. With high speed, heavy weaponry, good armor, the ability to carry a large amount of cargo or troops coupled with it's own fighter wing, the Garfish was a popular choice for the Earth Recapture missions.
The Garfish has a rounded hull reminiscent of its namesake, split near the middle be a blocky, rectangular cargo section from which the ship's fighter bays hang. The Garfish is split into six decks, four in the main hull and two fighter decks. The forward decks of the main hull are the domain of the crew, with the ship's bridge, mess hall, and communal bunk rooms taking up much of this space. The middle section contains two large cargo bays, with lifts to move supplies down to the upper and lower fighter decks, from which three emergency use thrusters are mounted on the back. The rear section of the ship houses the Garfish's three primary engines, main reactor and fuel tanks.
While the Garfish features a good volume of armor plating, it does not rely on this alone for defense like the Horizont. Mounted the bottom of hull, just in front of the fighter bays, is a large tri-barrel energy cannon turret on a rotation point. A combined triple blast is more than enough to savage Inbit clam ships or single Inbit mecha. The turret is backed up by six horizontal missile tube, three each side with two above the midline of the ship and one tube below. The Garfish primarily carries anti-ship missiles of limited usefulness against smaller enemies such as the Iigaa Boosters. Like other Mars Base designs, the Garfish's primary anti-mecha defense is provided by it's own fighter compliment. The Garfish's fighter decks can carry a total of nine Legioss Armo-Fighters, 6 on the larger upper deck and 3 on the lower deck.
Though the missiles and turret are more than enough to destroy any single attacking mecha, there were just not enough weapons and those is had were useless against a deluge by suicide runners attacking from all sides. When the Garfish is separated from it's fighter cover, this proved to be the major downfall of all the Garfish involved in the Mars Base Recapture missions. The Garfish also often suffered the same problem as the Horizont, entering Earth's atmosphere too fast, but it's heavy armor often saved them from burning up, though their lack of aerodynamic controls caused them to crash at very high speeds.
VEHICLE TYPE:
MECHA COMPLEMENT (Typical):
- 9 Legioss Armo-Fighters in the dorsal hangars.
- 20-40 Ride Armor, mainly VR-052F Mospeada's, that are always stationed on-board.
PROPULSION:
- 3 Reaction-mass thrusters:Primary propulsion for the Garfish class is supplied by three hydrogen fueled plasma thrusters.
- 3 Emergency thrusters: Mounted on the rear of the lower launch bays are three back thrusters, normally used for increased acceleration during combat.
- Planetary Capabilities: The Garfish class has secondary atmospheric capabilities through its reaction thrusters. Can land and take off again with ease, though the landing sites have to be hard, flat ground or prepared LZs.
MAXIMUM RANGE:
- Ten years fusion plant life, at low consumption rates, the Garfish has enough fuel supplies to travel to Earth and back.
DIMENSIONS:
- LENGTH: 178.7 m over all.
- HEIGHT: 33.2 m over main hull; 56.0 m over hangars; 69.9 m over all.
- WIDTH : 59.4 m over all.
- MASS: 62,500 metric tons.
WEAPON SYSTEMS:
- 1 Tri-Barrel Particle Beam Cannon Turret: bottom mounted triple
barrel turret, fires all three barrels simultaneously every three seconds.
- 6 Missile Launch Tubes : mounted above the particle turret, firing
long-range anti-warship cruise missiles. Range is 1200 to 1800 miles, depending on type.
Total supply 60 missiles. Warheads available include anti-mecha, conventional and nuclear anti-warship and anti-hive weapons.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT OF NOTE:
- Long-range and short range sensor arrays.
- The Third Recapture Mission vessels of this class were fitted with Dark stealth technology in the
months before their attempts to liberate Earth from Inbit occupation.
Note:
The second most common ship seen in the series, we closely see the Garfish in the ep# 18. We can clearly see that even after crashlanding, the sturdy Garfish was still able to take off and even fight, though its flaws against smaller Inbit mecha quickly becomes apparent.
