Dumb Dating Mistakes Men Make with Women

NOW THAT YOU'VE GOT HER PHONE NUMBER : WHERE TO GO FROM HERE

Congratulations! She gave you her phone number and invited you to call her sometime. Now what are you going to do?!?!?!

The Waiting Period

This is an area of great disagreement among dating experts. Some suggest waiting at least three days after you get her phone number before actually calling her, but others disagree. They see this as childish game playing and suggest you call her within a day or two at your earliest convenience.

If in doubt, use your best judgment about how soon to call her. Most women will be flattered if you call them fairly quickly, which gets things off to a good start.

It has probably been a long time since your mother taught you proper phone etiquette, so let’s review a bit.

  • Time of day . Plan to call her in the early evening. According to Miss Manners you should call no earlier than 6pm (to avoid the dinner hour) and no later than 9pm (in case she goes to bed early).
  • Location . Avoid calling while you’re stuck in traffic or in a crowded room, as this will distract your attention from her. And try not call her on your cell phone while you’re driving; insurance industry studies indicate talking on the phone and driving at the same time make you four times more likely to get in an accident.
  • Length of call . The call should be an appropriate length to be polite, make arrangements for a date, and say goodbye. Some small talk is good, especially if you can refer back to when the two of you met or you can get her to laugh. Don’t drag on too long, though, because the purpose of the call is to set up a date. Save the longer conversation for when the two of you are together in person.
  • Leave a message . If you reach an answering machine be sure to leave a brief, friendly message. A common blunder is to call and then hang up when the machine answers, but this is silly because she probably has caller ID and will know that you called anyway. Not leaving a message will only irritate her, not to mention that it’s considered rude.

Your Voice

In normal face-to-face communication, 93% of the message you send is transmitted through body language and tone of voice. In a telephone conversation the tone of voice becomes even more critical. She can’t see you to interpret your body language, so you have to communicate even more with your voice. Clear your throat before placing the call so you don’t croak like a frog when she answers. Stand up while you’re talking, this will strengthen your voice and convey enthusiasm. Finally, speak slowly so she can easily understand you. Talking too fast makes you sound nervous and can also lead to miscommunication.

Close The Call

Once you’ve enjoyed a little small talk and the date is arranged, close the call by making sure she has noted your phone number in case she needs to contact you prior to the date. If it’s going to be more than a week before you see her, let her know that you’ll call a few days in advance to confirm the arrangements for your date. Then simply say goodbye warmly, hang up, and start looking forward to your upcoming date.
