Course
Aims
The
primary objectives of this training course are to provide
Health and Safety Representatives (of organisations under the
jurisdiction of the Commonwealth OHS Act 1991) with the knowledge
and skills to be able to:
-
understand
the structure, purpose and provisions of the amended Occupational
Health and Safety Act 1991;
-
know
the role, functions and powers of a Health and Safety
Representative for a designated work group;
-
acquire
the knowledge and skills to exercise the powers of a Health
and Safety Representative for a DWG;
-
develop
strategies to implement the Act in the DWG
Practical
skills to be developed include:
-
identifying
and controlling hazards
-
knowing
where and how to obtain assistance/resources
-
incident
investigations
-
making
the most of the OHS Act, Regulations, Codes of Practice, etc
-
consulting
and negotiating
-
making
the health and safety committee more effective
-
learning
how to distinguish between OHS and Industrial Relations (I.R.)
-
understanding
the role of health and safety in your workplace.
Managers and Supervisors
In
addition, for those participants who are managers or supervisors
(not elected HSRs), the course will allow managers and
supervisors to:
-
gain
- and be able to apply - a basic knowledge and understanding
of the Commonwealth's Comcare system, with
particular emphasis on prevention
-
understand
- and be able to fulfil - the responsibilities of managers,
supervisors and employees as appropriate, in
implementing statutory and legislative requirements for
OHS
-
understand
the roles, rights and powers of health and safety representatives and
the roles of supervisors in dealing collaboratively with
occupational health and safety matters
-
be
able to apply a process of hazard identification, risk assessment and control in their workplaces
-
be
able to conduct workplace inspections
-
be
able to participate effectively in the health and safety
committee
-
be
able to place occupational health and safety in the overall
context of their organisation's current work, financial and
human resources management issues, including quality
and productivity improvement processes
-
understand
the difference between OHS and industrial relations issues and
deal with each accordingly.
