OHS
& INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS
"The Hidden Agenda"
1day
The
OHS component of an issue in the work place is only part of the
issue -
there is always an ‘industrial’ component.
Thus it is important to remember:
1.
You don’t resolve I.R. disputes by pretending they are
OHS issues.
2.
If OHS issues don’t get resolved, they eventually become
I.R. disputes.
(“McIvor’s First and Second Laws of OHS in the Workplace”!)
Protecting
workers from injuries and illnesses in the workplace has always
been one of the foremost concerns of the Australian trade union
movement. Clearly,
workplace health and safety is a legitimate trade union issue.
The ACTU adopted a comprehensive policy and approach to
occupational health and safety (in 1979). Subsequent updates occurred in 1981, 1983 and most recently
in 1993.
