OHS - A SYSTEMS APPROACH
Implementing an OHS Management System
("SafetyMAP",  AS4804 & ISO 17000)

2 days

“Health and safety can only be achieved through management of the work process and must be integrated into all work activities.  There should be a systematic process for the development of control methods that minimise health and safety risks.  System-based control methods that use standardised procedures and such techniques as task design to prevent incidents, are superior to reliance upon the judgement  and “common sense” of individuals.”

(SafetyMAP Auditing – Health and Safety Management Systems, 3rd Edition;
Victorian WorkCover Authority)

The integration of quality and OHS management processes is one of the most exciting developments in human resources management in the past two decades.  Many managers recognise the investment potential of good OHS performance.  However, many organisations have had difficulty in translating the concept of OHS into tangible, measurable actions in the workplace.

"What gets measured gets done" is a popular management saying.  It is particularly true for the management of OHS.  But what to do?  And what to measure?

OHS Management systems - such as "SafetyMAP"  (Safety Management Achievement Program) and Australian Standard AS4801 allow the key questions that drive change to be addressed:

  1. What are we doing well?

  2. Where is improvement needed?

  3. How do we get our people committed?

This two-day workshop explores practical strategies for developing a systems approach to the management of occupational health and safety.

Course Aims

  • explore the strategic links between health and safety and quality management; the concept of the productivity, quality - and safety triangle

  • examine how occupational health and safety can be used as "the window to your organisation" and how to get people used to working within a system

  • build and sustain commitment and ownership

  • introduce concepts of working safely by system; developing and monitoring standards, design and contract review, document control, purchasing, and collecting and using data efficiently

  • review the elements of both SafetyMAP and AS/NZS 4804

  • describe how to implement an OHS management system

  • explain both self-auditing and external auditing concepts.
