So who's Slasher Green?

'Slasher' was the nickname given to my Dad - Arthur 'Jim' Green (23/12/1922 - 2/4/2006) - when he was playing soccer for Wimbledon F.C. in the years immediately after the second world war. Its origins lie with comedian Sid Field - Slasher Green was one of his popular characters, a "cockney 'wide-boy' or 'spiv', aping the 'boys wiv the barrers'". With Slasher tapping into the post-war zeitgeist, Dad's contemporaries likely thought it an apt moniker for him given his working-class London upbringing and on-field élan.
