Scripture and Dream Exercise
Looking at and considering : “Give ear, O ye heavens” and “hear, O earth”
“Heavens” is speaking of the spiritual realm and therefore it is speaking of the hearing of our spirit.
“Earth” is speaking of the natural or physical world and is therefore addressing the mind of our soul.
We can also note that hearing in the spirit comes before hearing in the mind. We can then say that the direct teaching from the mouth of God comes to our spirit first and then it comes into our minds and understanding.
“God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth” (Jn 4:24).
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Rom 8:16).
“It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me” (Jn 6:45).
“My doctrine shall drop as the rain”
The thoughts of God can come into our minds and understanding like rain.
“How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!” (Ps 139: 17).
“my speech shall distil as the dew”
When we dwell on a word or on a dream from the Lord and begin to consider them, then thoughts would distill into our understanding. That is, out of having no thoughts and understanding, suddenly they distill into our minds.
“Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and
your soul shall live; and I
will make an everlasting covenant with you, [even]
the sure mercies of David” (Isa 55:3)
“as the small rain upon the tender herb”
In the beginning of our learning to hear the voice of God, His thoughts may firstly come to us slowly like dew visibly distilling onto the leaves out of nothing visible. But as we develop our spiritual sensitivities, God’s thoughts of communion with us will come a little more quickly as the small rain upon the tender herb.
“as the showers upon the grass”
As we become proficient in hearing the voice of the Spirit through exercise and continual familiarization, the fellowship of the thoughts of God will come to us like showers. The believer who has developed to hear God like this is mature in his spiritual senses of hearing. That is, he or she has an ear to hear God credibly.
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches…” (Rev 2:17).
