Every Spring the magpie season starts and cyclists regale each other with
war stories. A pleasant morning ride quickly changes when a magpie slams into
the side of your head. This map is aimed at tracking where they live so you can
avoid the worst of them, or at least be prepared.
I've had this site running for a couple of years now with a constant stream of updtes from people each Spring. Always happy to get new reports, but with some of the reports a few years old now, it is also good to get updates as these things change year to year (although some magpies seem to be like The Phantom and never die). If you want to contribute what I need is
information on where the magpies are, the level of agression, and the last year they were sighted.
So please send the following information to
magpiemap at gmail dot com
a) Latitude and Longitude, Use this map
to find the Lat and Long coordinates
b) Magpie rating, ie. Red=has drawn blood, Yellow=strikes helmet, Blue=Swoops but no damage
c) Last year sighted,
d) any other notes eg. not a magpie but a butcher bird or wattle bird
Preferably provide the info in the following format:
"-37.69995;145.19029;RED Last sighted 2006, Very nasty"
Last updated 3Oct09. Thanks for everyone's contributions, over 100 magpies listed across four states and one territory.
