Inner Cape

I made a Darth Maul costume for the premiere of Episode I so I'll just be ripping that apart.

Basically all it has is a back and two front pieces.  The stitching doesn't really need to be that flash as it's going to be covered with the shoulder armour and the cape.   You can use the same wool material you made the cape from, however I'm constantly concerned about how hot it's going to be underneath all this clothing, so I've used a lighter material, like they make T-shirts from.  The only problem with this type of material is that it curls up at the edges, so a lot of hemming is required.

Basic pattern for Inner Cape

Sewing the front to the backPlace the two front pieces onto the back pieces so that the front of the material is facing each other.  Now sew the front pieces onto the back piece but don't go right to the top.  You need to leave enough room for your arms to fit through.

Best idea now is to hem all the edges (except for the arm holes of course).  Don't fold it over once, fold it twice as this gives a thicker edge and makes it difficult for the material to curl up.

Last but not least, you can sew the top of the fronts to the back.

That's it in a nutshell.  Once I've finished mine I'll take some pictures of it.

If you not comfortable using this pattern, you can find plenty of robes in the pattern books at Spotlight.  Just look in the costumes section.
