This post card series shows glossy black and white images of Footscray Football Club players. Some of the photos are the same as those on the Magpie Cigarette cards of the same era. The back of the cards are captioned "Support your club, Footscray Football Club Post Card series". Apparently the cards were sold by SP bookies and the money exchanged would be used to bet on the horse racing. SP bookies were illegal and could not been seen to be taking money directly for betting. |

This series shows half length, real photos of players. Cards 15 and 16 appear twice with different subjects on each. There are eight known unnumbered cards in this series. The year of issue is difficult to determine, but the absence of Hawthorn and Footscray players may suggest that it was prior to 1925. |

The back of the card shows an advertisement for the store that
issued it. They were originally issued with coupons at the base for cutting
off and using in a prize scheme. This series shows the players name on the
back of the card and some cards are numbered on the front. The team photos
and the S.Barker card differ slightly in that they do have a caption on the
front. The cards are very flimsy and of generally poor quality and come in
several different shades including green, yellow and blue. The cards were most likely issued over a number of years as some
of the players listed did not start playing until after 1921, but an exact
date of issue is unknown. |

Metal Matchbox covers were popular in the early part of this
century. Clear covers were placed over the matchbox covers so picture inserts
could be stored in them. These are the only known football inserts. Once
again not all of these inserts have been seen but it is expected that one was
produced for each VFL team of the era. |

Lenten's changed its name to Lenten & Hocking whilst the series was being issued hence the two different backs. Also known as the Black Crow cards this series of 216 cards has only 210 of the cards known. These small , almost square, cards show real black and white head and shoulder photographs of VFL players. Card numbers 3, 53, 126, 142, 194 and 202 are yet to be seen. Card 157 has a second printing with S.Murphy of Collingwood. Card number 200 is actually a photo of S.Murphy but the caption says G.Gibbs. Card number 41 has two different subjects as listed but card number 42 is yet to be seen. |

These cards came in different varieties shaped liked men's hat with a prong at the bottom designed so the card could be attached to a button hole. Each hat had a team colour band around it. One set had the words 'Add O.T. to all drinks, warming and delicious' on the prong. Another two varieties have been seen, one just had the club name on the prong and the other had the club name followed by either League or Association. It is assumed that one card per team per style was issued for each of the VFA and VFL clubs of the era, although not all have been seen. |
