VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

The VIN (chassis number) is stamped into the top of the firewall on the rear right side of the engine compartment.  USA models have an additional VIN number with the Z's replaced which is visible in the bottom corner of the windscreen.

Porsche Factory Identification Number

This number forms the main part of the VIN and should be marked on a barcoded label affixed the left hand door pillar.  Highlighted in VIN table below in red.

Engine Number

The engine number on the 3-litre S2 is difficult to find and is stamped on the rear right of the engine crankcase.  The engine number prefix for 944S2's is M44/41 underneath this prefix is stamped the 8-character engine number.  The letter in the 3rd position of the engine number represents the model year (same letters as the VIN number).

Paint Code

The paint code is located on a small silver metallic paper adhesive label located on the left-hand side of the in the engine compartment to the right of the fuse box.

Porsche Factory Options Label

A paper adhesive label is fitted on the rear body panel in the luggage compartment.  It is located next to the left-hand tail light behind the carpet.  The label shows the VIN, Model Number, Engine Code, Transmission Code, Paint Code, Interior trim and a list of 3-digit Codes for Factory Fitted Options.  A duplicate of this label is located in the front of the Owner's Guarantee and Maintenance Manual.
