Ursula Dubosarsky is a children's writer whose range varies from the very small to teenage chronicles on a par with Sonya Hartnett. In Rex, the children of a primary school have turns taking the class pet, Rex the chameleon, home for the night. They chronicle their time with Rex, making no distinction between the real and the imaginary. Rex is small, but in their text and pictures, he becomes a huge prehistoric monster. The book is a genuine charmer, not least in the way the illustrations take the basic ideas of the text, and depict them large and colourfully.
