FENIX McLEAN &

SARAH EMILY GILMOUR

Fenix McLEAN and Sarah Emily GILMOUR are my paternal 3rd Great Grandparents.

Their son, John McLEAN is my 2nd Great Grandfather.

McLEAN: This notable surname, with spellings of MacLean, Maclean, MacLaine, McLean, Mccleane, McLane, and others, is widely recorded in Scotland and Ireland. It is a developed form of the Old Gaelic name "Mac gille Eoin", which translates as "the son of the devotee of (St) John", from "Mac", meaning son of, and "gille", literally translating as servant or follower", but used here in the transferred sense of devotee, and the saint's name "Eoin or Ian", the classic Gaelic form of John.

Fenix McLEAN

Sarah Emily GILMOUR

Fenix McLEAN arrived in Australia on 19th August 1832 aboard the ship "Mountaineer" with his wife, Sarah Emily (nee GILMOUR).

At this stage, I have no idea of Fenix McLEANs pedigree, but he was born c1808 in Coalisland, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

His occupation was a cabinet maker & builder. I assume that his family had come from Scotland at some time previously Fenix McLEAN married Sarah Emily "Sally" GILMOUR on 1st March 1832 in the Parish Church of New Mills, Parish of Donaghendry, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, by the Rev. William ASHE.

Fenix attended more to building work than cabinet work, no doubt owing to the need for homes, and it is reputed he erected a number of buildings in the Liverpool Street area, Sydney (opposite to where Hyde Park now faces).

Sarah Emily (Sally) GILMOUR was born in c1808 in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland to Thomas GILMOUR & Mary NEWELL. Sarah has a brother, John Newell GILMOUR, who also came out to Australia and resided in the Bathurst NSW area. Sarah had two sister, Eliza, and Eleanor.
Eliza GILMOUR had a daughter named Annie Jones (as stated in Sarah
's will). Apparently Eliza moved to Boston, USA.
Eleanor GILMOUR married Hugh CHAMBERS in Northern Ireland and they both were also aboard the ship "Mountaineer" with Sarah & Fenix.

Fenix & Sarah McLEAN resided at 12 Wexford Street, Sheriffs Garden (now Strawberry Hills area) in Sydney NSW Australia.

-         John (born 1832). John McLEAN is their only child that had children who survived. He is my 2nd Great Grandfather. John married Harriett Emma TREWREN in 1856 and resided in Bathurst NSW. They had 3 children: William Alfred (1859-1941), Emily Harriett (1857-1934), and John Alexander Fenix (1858-1859) who died in infancy.

-         Eleanor (born 1836). Eleanor McLEAN died in infancy in 1836.

-         and Mary Charlotte (born 1845). Mary Charlotte McLEAN had a daughter, Sarah, who died in infancy, and had no other children. Mary married Elliot JOHNSTON in 1864, but Mary died in 1867 (most likely during childbirth - but not confirmed). Elliot JOHNSTON was apparently a manager with "The Sydney Mail" newspaper. Elliot remarried Emma GUNDRY in 1870, after Mary's death.
