map of Renfrewshire superimposed on a map of Scotland (c) Crown copyrightj0371050"James was educated in the parish school, and, at the age of 15yrs, was bound apprentice to the carpentering trade, and completed his indentures in the early part of 1837. About that time, Rev. Dr. John Dunmore LANG, then in Australia, paid a visit to the motherland for the purpose of inducing ministers, teachers, and mechanics to emigrate to Australia. Mr James Lang was persuaded to try his fortune in the far-off land, leaving Greenock, in the ship "Portland", a vessel of 550 tons burden, just as the bells were tolling for the death of King William IV. After a very tedious voyage, he arrived in Sydney on 3rd December 1837, and worked at this trade for some time in Sydney. He then went south, and eventually settled at Numbaa, on the Berry Estate, Shoalhaven, and was appointed postmaster there, an office he continued to hold for 17 years. Resigning in 1868, he came to the Richmond River, where his eldest son had taken up land, two years previously. In leaving the Shoalhaven district, Mr Lang was presented with an address and purse of sovereigns; and great regret was expressed at his departure. Mr Lang arrived at Woodburn in the beginning of 1869, where he resided up to the time of his death". (extract from the Richmond River Herald 1901, Obituary Mr James Lang)
