Failsafe Drinks

Drinks

RICE MILK-HOME MADE

One cup of hot freshly cooked rice (I boiled it for fifteen
minutes in lightly salted water)
four cups of hot water
Place in blender and blend for five minutes until a smooth
liquid. Allow to sit for thirty minutes, then pour into
another container, being careful not to disturb the
sediment on the bottom. Or strain through cheesecloth (I
couldn't find any cheesecloth, so I used a piece of fairly
open weave linen, but had to squeeze it through).
Flavourings were not specified, so I added one tablespoon
of sugar and one tablespoon of oil. There were some further
unclear directions about improving the flavour by recooking
the rice and adding flavourings, but I decided not to risk
ruining what seemed to be a success.

I wouldn't want to drink this on its own, but the texture
seemed good

½ cup sugar
1 ¼ cups water

SALT AND VINEGAR CHIPS

I put plain kettle chips in a large plastic bag, sprinkled in
a pinch of citric acid, inflated the bag with air, sealed it and shook.  The
citric acid adheres to the chips and, voila, salt and "vinegar" chips.
You'll have to experiment with citric acid quantities but the chips passed
the taste test with Steve and he is fairly critical of "substitutes".

TIP - pharmacy products

You will find very few  pharmacy products have ingredients list.  There are no safe throat lozenges, my recommendation would be panadol for pain relief ( adults plain white tablets), garlic and  horseradish tablets with fenugreek and marshmallow for colds and mucus production, please note these do contain salicylates.  For chesty coughs you can buy small white tables of Bisolven
which is a mucolytic i.e. it breaks down the mucus so it drains away, and is really good, use as per directions.  When I feel it is required I will add a pinch of Vit C powder to Magic cordial and or  give a garlic tablet over and above the heaps of garlic I use in cooking.

Country Harvest is failsafe.  Glucone delta lactone (GDL) is used as a  raising agent in GF foods.   Pre-gelatinised starch (pre-gel) stops cakes and  breads from crumbling - a common problem in gluten-free cooking. These are  both failsafe.  A lot of people don't much like the taste of Country Harvest.
