Backing Up Frameit

The Backup module supplied with Frameit is provided "free".  It is simply a program that calls the shareware software PKZIP (a full copy as per the shareware distribution requirements is supplied).  The option to do a DATA backup simply PKZIP's all the dbf files into a zip file called DATA.ZIP.  The option for a full backup takes all the files in the directory and compresses them, less those files specified in the exemption file EXCLUDE.LST, to a file called FULL.ZIP.  These ZIP files are then copied to a diskette along with the PKUNZIP file.  In this way if you are required to restore the database, you have both the data and the tool (pkunzip) available.

Q.    How often should I back up?

A.    Every time you reach the stage where the potential loss of data would cause a significant impact.  For a retail shop we suggest as of the close of business every day.  Refer to your manual for further discussion on this.

Q.    How do I transfer Frameit to another computer?

A.    Frameit is held in one directory.  There are no INI file settings and so it can be duplicated to another compter by simply copying the files (be aware that the Licence Agreement only allows you to operate Frameit on one PC unless you have previously obtained permission from JiTechnics).  So there are many ways that this could be carried out.  Within Frameit we  have tried to make Backing up simple.  Here is the procedure to restore that backup.

  1. On the old computer take a FULL COMPRESSED backup.
  2. Go to the new computer.  While there are a number of ways that this restore can be done we am going to discribe how to do it from DOS. We took this approach as it is simple to describe and much easier than doing it through Windows.
  3. On the new computer go into a DOS or Command box.  This should give you a black screen with a prompt.  Type the following.
  4. cd\ <enter>                    should show C:\>
  5. md  frameit <enter>        should show C:\>
  6. cd  frameit <enter>        should show C:\frameit>
  7. put the LAST disk (if more than 1) in the PC
  8. a:pkunzip  a:full  <enter>    message should appear saying to put the first disk in and press a key (if only one disk just press a key).
  9. data should be copied to the new computer.

You will need to create a shortcut on your desktop.  The file/shortcut should have been restored in your 'frameit' directory.
