Hervey Bay Volante IV Whale Watch
Why do the whales come into Hervey
Bay?
This had the scientists puzzled for
some time, but the answer seems fairly simple: R&R. or rest and
recreation.
The females bring their four to six
week old calves into the Bay, where they have no fear of killer whales or
pack-shark attacks, where mums can recover after the stresses of calving and
feed their young the enormous amount of milk they require to gain weight and the
layer of blubber, vital to their survival in the icy waters of
Antarctica.
Where else do you find
vessel-friendly humpback whales on R&R, NOT IN TRANSIT but playing, chasing,
breaching, in their ever increasing numbers, mothers feeding and training
calves, singing and even sleeping, in an area strictly controlled as a Marine
Park? The Bay is sheltered by magnificent World Heritage listed Fraser Island
and has an average winter temperature of 22 degrees, clear waters for excellent
viewing and thousands of dolphins as a bonus.

To see a whale breach is a sight
nobody will ever forget, where 45 tons of whale will propel itself almost clear
out of the water by merely a few flicks of its tail.
Very few people realise that the
humpback whale does not dive deep before breaching. How can they? They are as
long as the shallow waters of Hervey Bay are deep and would nose-dive into the
bottom. No, they swim under the surface, bend their head back and up and
virtually ‘leap’ out of the water, almost upright, twisting their body 180
degrees, before crashing on their backs, exploding tons of water in all
directions. The breach can be seen from five to six kilometres or more and are
often the first indication where the whales are.
Or are they showing the whale watch
fleet of their presence?... Who’s watching who?
Here we have the fifth largest animal
that ever lived on this planet, in the wild yet totally at ease with man, in a
kind of trust we don’t deserve.
