          VetGen's new
ChromaGene™ DNA test for Coat Color in
          Gordon Setters

Now, for the first time, breeders and owners can test a black and tan Gordon Setter to determine if the dog is carrying the genes which cause the red and liver color. This information will allow breeders to avoid producing red or liver Gordon Setter puppies in their litters, providing the opportunity to only breed the allowed black and tan color as specified in the Breed Standard..

The ChromaGene™ test will determine which one of the genotypes listed below your Gordon Setter is:

If your dog is black the possible genotypes are: BBEE, BBEe, BbEE, BbEe.
If your dog is liver, the possible genotypes are: bbEE, bbEe.
If your dog red, with a black nose Possible genotypes are: BBee, Bbee.
If your dog is red with a liver nose Your dog is genotypes bbee.

The value of the ChromaGene™ Test is, that it determines if a breeding pair is carrying e or b and therefore capable of producing the unwanted red or liver coat color.

Once your dog has been tested and you know its genotype, use this table for breeding strategies and breeding stock selection. The outer ring of the color buttons shows the visible coat color with the small upper right circle showing the nose color (black or liver). The inner rings show the hidden color genes carried by the dog. Entries in the table show the probabilities of producing various coat colors within a litter. For example, if your results show that your dog is a Type Bbee, your dog is a red dog with a black nose carrying the hidden genes for black and liver. If you were to mate your dog with a Type bbEE, the resulting litter would, on the average, have half black and half red puppies. These probabilities represent expectations averaged over the long run and are subject to the law of probabilities.

Note that any breeding which produces both liver and red has the potential to produce liver nosed reds. If the breeding does not have the potential to produce blacks, only red and liver, all reds will have liver noses.
