"Blackwood"

A few years ago while in Tasmania, I purchased a rather nice plank of Blackwood about 8" wide. This project was aimed at using that plank.  I had four Vifa M11WG's and  a pair of Jaycar 120wrms 10" poly woofers, so an MTM+W 3-way seemed the obvious choice. I chose a Peerless 811582 tweeter because of the 80mm faceplate, it has proven to be a very nice tweeter.

Gumby's open back arrangement was so nice I decided to do the MTM as an 'open-back' design. The 10" woofer was too wide for the plank, so the design needed to have bulged sides around the woofer. For aesthetic reasons, it was decided to trim the woofer with a ring of blackwood. Also, to align the centers a bit better, and aim the woofer up away from the floor a bit, an angled front was applied to the woofer section

As usual, a series x-o was used, in this case a linked 3-way series x-o.

Peter from RZAudio dropped by to have a listen. His comments were very gratifying!

"Dropped over and had a listen to Andy's Blackwood and these are one of my favourites (if not the favourite) of all his creations. From the first notes, the sound was instantly likeable and suits my listening..... this rarely happens and Andy was using some Yamaha gear so nothing exotic to tart up the sound.
The tonal balance is spot on and projects mids and soundstage in such a great fashion... quite eerie really.... a fantastic listen."
