Origin Story

Cathy was a shy college student at a university college in Chicago until March 2003. She was trying to get into the honors program, but her overall GPA was being brought down by her poor performance in physical education. A visiting scholar, Dr Deidre Wentworth, approached Cathy and asked her to consider being the first subject to take part in a new psychology experiment intended to enhance the subject's ability to learn and retain physical coordination skills. Anxious to give herself every opportunity for honors, Cathy volunteered to participate in the experiment, which involved hypotism and listening to tapes with subliminal messages.

After only a few sessions, Cathy's performance in physical education had improved almost beyond belief. Not only that, but the process had changed her physiology: she was stronger, faster, more durable, and more resilient than before. However, she was also more physically aggressive, particularly towards men. After assaulting a drunken man at a frat party one night, Cathy realised more had been done to her than she had been warned about. Straightaway, she returned to Dr Wentworth's laboratory to speak with her. However, the laboratory was completely empty, devoid of all equipment: Cathy found spaces behind some of the walls that may have contained electronics, but now only contained sealed-off cables. Realising that her life had turned into something from the X-Files, Cathy immediately did a runner to escape from whoever conducting the secret experiment on her.

Over the past four months, Cathy travelled eastwards across the Appalachians. Anxious to avoid being identified and captured by the people who sponsored Dr Wentworth's experiment, Cathy found it impossible to stay in any one place for more than a few weeks. She arrived in New York City early in June, finding an apartment in Brooklyn Heights and a job waiting tables in Tribeca.
