Charity

Unlike the previous three characters from the "grand campaign", significant meta-game planning went into Charity's character concept before she was put aside in favour of re-using Mark Brooke. By this time I was well aware of the difficulties created by characters who weren't interested in the campaign storyline and who weren't particularly proactive, and I was also aware that my previous characters usually fell into one of those problem categories. As a result, I wanted to make sure I had a character with an active personality that would willingly develop an interest in the campaign storyline following the initial "hook" of being the bodyguard for one of the "core" characters. As an employee, she would have a strong incentive to try and get along with all the other characters, even the less tractable ones, something else that had been a problem for me in the past. I'd even floated the possibility of a missing brother to the GM, in case another hook was needed.

I had some pictures and a tentative character design (adapted for 3rd edition). I even had a list of synonyms for "common", just in case! Sadly, I never had a chance to play Charity in the "grand campaign", or any other campaign for that matter. It's still a disappointment for me: I find the concept of a well-bred young woman working as a professional officer and bodyguard in another country "because it would be common if I was serving in the army back home" entertaining, and there hasn't been a suitable opportunity since to play Charity. So, here's to Charity, an officer and a lady.
