Sessions 67 to 69 - Varia

This chronology of events is written from Sheyana's perspective. It is not an exhaustive account of the entire group's actions, or even of all Sheyana's activities: however, it covers the key events of the campaign, and should provide a skeleton around which individual players can build more detailed and personalised notes.

The session column indicates session number, the players attending (by initial of first name), the date on which we played and the XP awarded. The date column indicates the game date using the Amaran (human) calendar. The events column summarises important occurrences on that date.

Elindyll, Pera, Sheyana, level (12th), Kaysund levels (11th)

Friday 12/7/L4

The envoys approach the village of Varia; as they ride, Kaysund spots something in the trees, calling out, "What the hell is that?"; when asked, he describes a small red-skinned creatures with horns, bat wings, and a barbed tail; Sheyana can briefly sense the presence of evil, and Kerrak can smell brimstone on the air; Elindyll does a slow circuit of the group, trying to detect any residual magic; Kaysund rides off ahead of the others, and doesn't return even when Sheyana asks him to come back; unsurprisingly, Kaysund is attacked by two invisible cats that maul him and his horse; Kerrak recognises them as Bezekiras, and Elindyll recognises Kerrak's roar as the "Bezekira-killer" roar and returns; one of the Bezekiras plays with Kaysund, pinning him with a claw, letting him crawl away, then pinning him again, until Kaysund passes out from his injuries; Kerrak kills one of the Bezekiras by himself, and is upset when Elindyll kills the second one; Taranell heals Kaysund, saving his life; Kaysund seems ungrateful that Taranell prioritised his life over his injured horse, insisting that "I'm going to kill it right away if it isn't healed right now!"; Taranell responds that he has a duty to heal people, but agrees to heal Kaysund's horse before he finishes healing Kaysund.

68 DGJKNS (18/02/04) Friday 12/7/L4 Susanna rejoins the other envoys, using magic to teleport to their current location; Sheyana senses an evil presence near Susanna, but it passes; Elindyll offers Susanna his horse to ride; Sheyana heals Kerrak of all his injuries when she mounts him, a power newly-granted by Pelor; the envoys continue towards Varia, and Susanna narrates what happened on her adventure with Zeltebar to the Gnomish village of Snappleville, where they captured an evil Gnomish wizard who had a temple to an evil god in his hidden lair; Zeltebar is returning to Salariel with the prisoner so that he can be properly interrogated by the church Elders; Susanna destroyed the altar in the profane temple, and ever since then she's felt a shadow spying on her over her shoulder; a blond angelic being with feathery wings, wearing a glowing white robe and carrying a whip, appears on the trail; she warns the envoys that a great battle between good and evil is taking place up ahead, and that they are not sufficiently powerful to survive the conflict; the envoys are suspicious, and Elindyll complains about the woman doing something to his mind; Sheyana determines that the woman is an evil being pretending to be a heavenly messenger, and attacks her; Susanna and Elindyll help defend the woman, beguiled by her magics, and the woman flies high above the ground to avoid Kaysund and Sheyana; Taranell, then Pera grapple with Susanna so that she can't use magic on the other envoys, while Elindyll almost kills Taranell; Elindyll refuses to believe Sheyana is right until the woman gives him too direct a command to kill them all, even Susanna, and he turns on her, firing the fatal arrow; in death, the woman returns to her natural form, a dark-haired bat-winged beauty; the envoys regroup, and continue on towards Varia; on the outskirts of the village, they see a second bat-winged woman, a large scaly brute of a man with a long scaly beard, and a militia of two dozen men and women armed with clubs, staffs and spears.
69 DGJKNS (25/02/04)

Susanna, Taranell level (11th)

Friday 12/7/L4 The envoys charge into battle against the two demons and their militia of beguiled villagers; the large brute is swiftly driven back by weight of numbers and abandoned by the woman, who takes to the air; while the others kill the male demon, Elindyll kills the second woman with another well-placed arrow, then shoots down the three imps watching from the trees; the woman's death frees the villagers from her control, and they quickly turn on her dead body; Sheyana uses the church's curing wand to heal the two villagers the female demon injured when she fell from the sky; the villagers explain that they have been controlled by the two demon women for many months, who were making them excavate a circle of standing stones that had been buried beneath a hill; the stronger-willed villagers who kept resisting their control were imprisoned, and five of them sold to a dwarf and some ant-people a few days ago; the envoys go with the villagers and free the surviving villager bricked up in the punishment hut; some of the villagers are worried that their weakness against the demons' magic is a sign of personal weakness, but Taranell and Sheyana reassure them that it isn't; Elindyll, Susanna, Sheyana and Kerrak go to view the circle of stones, while Taranell, Kaysund and Pera stay in the village and help organise prayers to mourn for the dead; Sheyana can sense the evil in the stones, and briefly senses an evil presence near Susanna once again; that evening, the envoys discuss what the demons may have wanted; Sheyana and Taranell agree that demons don't have the concerns or morality of mortal beings, and aren't pleased when Kaysund responds, "Well, I can't see that is a problem"; Susanna teaches Elindyll the spell to fly, and gives him back his letter of intent, which she had been keeping to send back with a written reply that she just hasn't gotten around to; the villagers offer Taranell the treasure looted from the village by the demons plus the villagers' worldly possessions and belongings; Sheyana is angry with Kaysund and Elindyll because they want to keep everything the villagers own; instead, they settle for the treasure trove containing over 1300 GP in coins and gems plus a magic wand, magic shield, magic longbow and five magic arrows; Susanna sends a magic message back to Salariel about what the envoys have encountered and discovered, and asks for additional supplies and magic arrows.
Saturday 13/7/L4 In the morning, the envoys return to the standing stones and excavate out the remaining dirt inside the stone circle; they uncover a carved stone basin in the shape of a skull, with grooved channels leading from the five stones to the skull; the envoys put the dirt back over the stone basin and return to the village; a little later, a portal appears near Elindyll; a laden mule is prodded through the portal, which closes after it; the mule is carrying a large supply of food, two silvered daggers, a quiver of magic arrows, and two potions of healing; the mule and the food is given to the village, despite Elindyll and Kaysund's complaints.
