The Justice Battalion

The X-Men experienced a number of "alternate lives" during the crisis caused by the Adversary's attempts to overthrow Roma as manager of the multiverse. At one point, they became an alternate Golden Age X-Men team, namely:

Blue Bolt, the Living Dynamo! Amazing Man! Bear-Man and Cub! The Crimson Avenger and the Southern Belle! Miss Midnight! Zelda the Incredible! Magnetman! Together they are ... the Justice Battalion! Champions of justice, dedicating their lives to protecting an America which distrusts them as foreigners, ex-criminals, Bolsheviks, and coloured people!

Eight heroes banded together to form the Justice Battalion shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on 7 December, 1941. Since then, they have devoted their time to combating Axis sympathisers, saboteurs, and supervillains on the West Coast of the United States of America, with the occasional mission elsewhere. It was on one such mission (to the Eastern Front in 1942) that Cub joined the Battalion.

Their brownstone headquarters is located in San Francisco. The Justice Battalion don't spend much time with the other superhero groups who live on the East Coast, both because of the distance and because the Battalion has several disreputable members (see individual entries for the sordid details).

Amazing Man (Zachary Brown): Raised in a circus, where he excelled in all manner of acrobatic stunts. An accomplished juggler, tumbler, and trapeze artist, Amazing Man first donned his tights to stop a gang of crooks stealing the takings. A black man, he is living proof that the Nazi's theories of eugenics and racial superiority are wrong.

Bear-Man (Thomas Jarlson III): A wealthy playboy whose grandparents emigrated from Norway at the turn of the century to establish a successful shipping empire on the west coast of the United States. Bear-Man began his war on crime after the tragic murder of his fiancee by a Nazi saboteur. Whenever he dons his grandfather's magic bearskin cape, his strength increases twentyfold and he seems oblivious to physical harm! There are dark rumours that he was a Socialist sympathiser in his younger days.

Blue Bolt, the Living Dynamo (Chuck Levick): Arriving on Earth in a rocket ship while but a babe, Blue Bolt's super-advanced physique constantly absorbs electrical energy from the abundant ozone layer of our planet. As a result of this electrical charge, he can: lift tremendous weights; hurdle tall buildings; run faster than an express train; and nothing less than a bursting shell can penetrate his skin! Easily the most powerful member of the Justice Battalion, Blue Bolt decided long ago to use his titanic strength to help the needy and oppressed.

The Crimson Avenger (Dominic Hernandez Lorca): One of the earliest of the costumed mystery-men, this dashing Spaniard has long sinced ceased to carry a rapier. Nowadays, he relies on his fists, his clever wits, and his magic ruby ring. If the Avenger concentrates while wearing this ring, he can summon forth a peculiar red-tinged energy from the ring. With this energy he can move himself or another person about, and shield himself or another from an enemy's blows!

Cub (Natalia Petrovna): While on a mission to the Eastern Front in early '42, Bear-Man rescued a young Russian girl from the devilish Nazis. She now shares his adventures as his loyal sidekick, Cub. Her courage and determination belie her youth (a mere slip of a girl at sixteen) and inexperience. Miss Midnight has been tutoring her in the Oriental fighting arts, including the infamous Karate Chop.

Magnetman (Erik Lehnsherr): A brilliant young Jewish scientist from Poland, Magnetman came to America a few years before the Nazi occupation of his homeland. When Axis agents came to his laboratory to steal his top-secret invention, a metal that creates magnetic fields when prompted by a high intellect's brainwaves, he fought back, defeating them soundly. Magnetman's special gloves let him attract and repulse metal objects with but a thought: if he concentrates hard enough, he can even turn aside a speeding bullet!

Miss Midnight (Clarice Bower): Secretive and mysterious, Miss Midnight is an adept in the exotic Oriental fighting arts of Karate and Jiu-Jitsu. Her trademarks are her darkness bombs and the infamous Karate Chop, capable of dropping even a large man. Although clearly an American girl, in the past she has spoken out against the incarceration of nisei (Japanese-Americans).

The Southern Belle ("Belle"): Formerly an infamous thief and femme fatale, her wild days are behind her now that the Crimson Avenger, her nemesis, has stolen her heart with his masculine charms. Belle's trademark was her strength-draining kiss and touch: she would cover her hands and lips with a mysterious powder that could make a man weak and feeble after only a few seconds of contact.

Zelda the Incredible: Taught in her youth by an Indian Swami, Zelda's mental powers are hard to believe but impossible to deny. She can tell where an object has been by examining it, sense the location of a man across a city, and even levitate! A practitioner of ancient Indian arts like yoga and hypnotism, Zelda conceals her superhuman abilities by pretending to be nothing more than a stage magician.
