Characters receive experience points (XP) for two different activities: intensive regular training and being available to participate or actually taking part in combat missions.
All characters who carry out the required standard of training receive 1 XP for each game week that passes. This includes characters who are not part of the X-Men but who participate in regular intensive exercise.
Any active X-Man who participates or is available to participate in a mission or other team duties will receive 1 XP for that session of play. A player character will receive this point if the player was present throughout the session, whether or not the character meets the above criteria. Conversely, a player character will not receive this point if the player is absent that session, even if the character participates in a combat mission. Also, a player cannot receive more than 1 XP for a session: if more than one character controlled by the same player (such as Stellar and White Lotus) takes part in a mission, the player must decide which character receives the XP for that session.
Example One: Caliban (an active X-Man) is available for a combat mission but is not on the team chosen to deal with the emergency. At the end of the session, Caliban receives 1 experience point because he was available to participate in a mission.
Example Two: Hara (an active player character X-Man) is in Anchorage guarding the Dread Pirate Roberts and waiting for a detachment of Guardsmen to arrive when an emergency occurs in San Francisco. She cannot return to San Francisco in time to deal with the crisis. The player settles down to read a book. At the end of the session, Hara receives 1 experience point because (a) the character was performing other team duties and (b) the player was present.
Example Three: Aura and Marik (neither of whom are active X-Men) are at the X-Men base when Cockroach Andy sends a new and improved Roach Bomb to destroy his enemies. Aura telepathically finds Cockroach Andy and guides the X-Men to him. Marik obeys Rogue and goes to the monitor room to wait out the emergency. At the end of the session, Aura receives 1 experience point for participating in a mission. Marik does not receive an experience point, even though he was in as much danger as Aura and the X-Men.
Finally, players can add half the XP they have earned for participating in sessions while playing other characters to their current character's XP total. This bonus rewards long-term players for their ongoing participation and involvement in the campaign.
As of session 907 on 6 February 2012, player characters had been awarded the following experience points. Note that the training bonus covers the period of game time up to 31 December 1998.
