About The Gold Coast Local Group
How our group works
What we do as a group is up to the members to decide together. You may volunteer to take charge of organising an event, or join a sub-committee to help arrange a stall, with fundraising or for a special event. Some people stay in contact primarily through the group?s email list, supporting our events and campaigns, writing letters or lending a hand as needed.
Meetings
Meetings give members the chance to discuss and effect the actions of the group. They allow ideas to be exchanged, news to be shared and topics discussed. They are held once a month on the first Thursday of the month and generally run from 6.00 to 7.30 pm. Some members then choose to spend a little time together in a less formal setting.
At the beginning of each year the group will hold a planning session to map out its aims and direction and main activities for the year.

Fundraising
As a group, we plan to raise funds that will be contributed to Amnesty International through the Queensland Office.

Stalls
Stalls are used to raise awareness about Amnesty International, attract interest in campaigns andincrease membership & support.

Campaigns
Specific campaigns are run by Amnesty International Australia throughout the year. Currently the main campaigns are Stop Violence Against Women, Refugees, Human Rights, Human Rights and Security and Abolish the Death Penalty. As a group we decide what level of involvement we would like to have.

Detention and imprisonment

In countries throughout the world people are being detained and imprisoned arbitrarily without a fair trial.  In these circumstances many face torture or other forms of ill-treatment.

Prisoners and detainees may be subjected to torture or other ill-treatment.  They may be held in conditions that are so poor that these amount to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.

Aspects of detention and imprisonment that AI campaigns on include:

  • Prisoners of conscience
  • Arbitrary, incommunicado and secret detention and solitary confinement
  • Fair trial
  • Torture and other forms of ill-treatment

Our Work
We campaign on a wide range of issues to protect and defend human rights. Our vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards.

Stop Violence Against Women
Violence against women is one of the most widespread human rights abuses in the world.

End the Death Penalty
Every day, all over the world, prisoners ? men, women and children ? face execution. We are opposed to its use, everywhere in the world, for whatever reason.

Freedom of expression

Throughout the world individuals face harassment and imprisonment as a result of exercising their right to freedom of expression.

Everyone has the right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas without fear or interference.

This right is important for the personal development and dignity of every individual and is vital for the fulfilment of other human rights.

Freedom of expression has always been a core part of Amnesty International?s work and is closely linked to the right to hold opinions and the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.

Amnesty International has campaigned on behalf of thousands of prisoners of conscience ? people who are imprisoned because of their political, religious or other conscientiously held beliefs, ethnic origin, sex, colour, language, national or social origin, economic status, birth, sexual orientation or other status.

Amnesty International calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience.
Armed Conflict

Where wars erupt, suffering and hardship invariably follow. Conflict is the breeding ground for mass violations of human rights including unlawful killings, torture, forced displacement and starvation.

In conflicts across the globe, governments and armed groups routinely attack civilians and commit war crimes and terrible abuses of human rights.
