Q. What does 12h, orientation, inverted, alignment
all mean ?
A. These terms refer to the positioning of the
dies in the press. Click on Die Axis above.
Q. What do these different catalogue numbers mean
?
A. Over the years different authors have listed
the Columbia farthings with their own numbers. Back in the 1960s, Fuld produced
a list in the Numismatist, collectors placed his name or initial in front of
the number to identify the piece and where the number came from. ie; Fuld 1,
Fuld 2 or F1, F2 etc. Later Kyle extended this list with new varieties that
were found. Some collectors are now using Kyle or K in front of that number.
The Kyle numbers are the same as the first lot of Fuld numbers, just a different
name or letter in front. This site uses the # sign instead of F or K.
Q. Is the Reverse Justice or Britannia
?
A. The reverse is often expressed as Justice (scales
& blindfold) in North America, and Britannia (shield & female pose)
in UK. This site will use JUSTICE.
Q. Have any metal detectors found these coins
? ... and where ?
A. Yes, so far in England - 2 in Hertsfordshire
and 1 in Kent. (Click on "Detector Finds" link above)
Q. What are other differences between Kyle 6,7,8,
if any ? I have for example noted that the die-break/lock of hair at the forehead
of 6 does not appear on the 7.
A. A comparison of
the #6, 7 & 8 obverse dies HERE
Q. What are the die alignments for the various
types ? For example, I have Kyle 6 with medal and coinage alignments.
A. #6 is the only one with a 0º die axis (medal
alignment) at this stage. Don't be surprised if others turn up. Your K6 "coin
alignment" may well be a new variety.
CF2 asks
Q. Are there any other British tokens that are linked to the Columbia series?
There are others that seem to be part of the same series whose origins may be
more easily identifiable.
CF1 asks
Q. Does anyone have a #6 with a missing ball above the scales as mentioned by
Fuld? And their opinion if it is missing from the die, due to die wear or something
else.
Q. Has anyone seen the BRASS #5, the one with the fasces?
Q. It has been suggested that some of these tokens have been struck over another
coin. On questioning sellers who mention this, no evidence is visible.
Has anyone seen any evidence of this?
