In a casual conversation with an ex-employee of the Royal Australian Mint, he mentioned that when coining dies were repaired at the Royal Mint (Great Britain), producing over dates, letters over letters or other subtle changes, the coins from these dies were mainly sent to the colonies (1600s-1800s). An interesting thought.
