1.Legend - The words or lettering that appears on a coin

2. Truncation - Stylised cut at the base of a coinage effigy

3. Effigy - The image of a person, usually the head or head and shoulders.

4. Rim - The raised area around the edges of the obverse and reverse

Other terms you are likely to come across

Design - The devices, lettering, etc. appearing on a coin
Mintmark (MM) - A device appearing on a coin to denote the place of minting.
Privy mark - Secret mark incorporated in the design of a coin to identify the minter, or even the particular die used. The term is also used more loosely to denote any small symbol or initials appearing on a coin other than a mint mark
Reeding/reeded edge - Also known as milling and serrations, the small raised lines on the edge of a coin, these can be continuous, like our 5cent, 10cent, 20cent and the round 1966 50cent coins. Or, interrupted as on our dollar and two dollar coins, which can help the blind to distinguish the denominations

5. Edge - Regarded as the third side of a coin. It may be plain, reeded, or ornamented with lettering or other elements raised or incuse.

6. Planchet - A rimmed blank on which a coin design is stamped

7. Field - The portion of a coin where there is no design

8. Device - The pattern, emblem or effigy in the design of a coin
