Please note - Where a class or sub-class is given for the hammered silver coins, it is my opinion. Further research in some cases maybe needed to verify.

Farthing
Silver hammered pennies from Anglo-Saxon period to Edward I, were cut in half (halfpenny) and quarters (farthing) by the moneyers of the day and probably by traders for small change. Whether by design or good luck, the reverse crosses were a guide for cutting these pennies.
