A Night at the Royal

This painting was inspired by a weekend away in Sofala, a very tiny town just out of Bathurst in the Central West of New South Wales. We stayed a night in the once quite grand Royal Hotel and this was the view from the first floor iron laced verandah that extended along its front overlooking the main street. There was no full moon this particular night; this was an invention to add to the mystery of such an odd little town which is almost deserted now, a stark contrast to how it thrived in the days of the great gold rush. Sofala and Hill End have been subjects of interest to Australian artists always.
